GEORGE III: (1738-1820) King of the United Kingdom 1760-1820. A good A.L.S., George R, one page, 4to, Weymouth, 2nd October 1800, to `My dear Frederick` (his son, Frederick, Duke of York). The King informs his son that the full recovery of Sophia (1777-1848, Daughter of King George III) will enable him to leave Weymouth on Wednesday and continues, `Mr. Secy. Dundas has sent me a strange proposal of employing Sir Ralph Abercrombie (sic) in Egypt to which I have answered that the 5000 disposable men left at Minorca may be sent if thought advisable for that Service and from the East Indies a reinforcement ordered for that service but that the proposed force for Portugal can in the present situation of affairs be ordered for any new service.` The King further states `I approve of M. Gl. Wemys`s Regt. being called the grd. and of the formation of the Regt. of Riflemen and that the cloathing shall be green with black.` and also adds `The Judge Advocate seems perfectly right in his opinion that the Quarter Master of the 21st Light Dragoons be dismissed the Service as his declaration of having been inlisted to be appointed Sergeant Major is not controverted.` The King concludes `I ever remain, my dear Frederick, your most affectionate Father`. With blank integral leaf bearing a holograph docket by the Duke of York. A letter of excellent association and with good military content. About EX Frederick, Duke of York (1763-1827) King George III`s favourite son. Commander-in-Chief of the Forces 1795-1809, 1811-1827. Henry Dundas (1742-1811) Scottish Politician, Secretary of State for War 1794-1801. Ralph Abercromby (1734-1801) British Lieutenant-General, noted for his service during the Napoleonic Wars. Abercromby successfully drove the French out of Egypt; indeed The battle at Abukir, involving the debarkation of troops in the face of strenuous opposition, is ranked among the most daring and brilliant exploits of the British Army. Abercromby died from wounds received in the battle.

SPENCER JOHN: (1924-1992) 8th Earl Spencer. Father of Diana, Princess of Wales. Fine A.L.S., Johnnie, two pages, 8vo, Buckingham Palace, 15th October 1953, to `My dear Eddie` (Prince Edward, Duke of Kent, 1935- , Cousin of Queen Elizabeth II). Spencer sends his correspondent belated birthday greetings and hopes that he is enjoying army life at Sandhurst. He continues, `My own news for once is really exciting! I have become engaged to Frances Roche and we hope to be married in June after she returns from Florence and I from the Commonwealth Tour.` and further remarks `You can`t imagine how happy one feels to have found someone one knows one can love and cherish for ever. But it`s very sad we must wait for so long.` A letter of good content. VG Frances Roche (1936-2004) Mother of Diana, Princess of Wales. John Spencer and Frances Roche married on 1st June 1954 at Westminster Abbey. They were divorced in April 1969.

DISRAELI BENJAMIN: (1804-1881) British Prime Minister 1868, 1874-80. Interesting A.L.S., B. Disraeli, four pages, 8vo, House of Commons, n.d. (`Friday`, marked in pencil in another hand January 1840), to William Maberly, marked `Private`. Disraeli writes, in part, `As members of parliament have been deprived of their privilege of receiving letters free, it seems to me….that they should at least be placed on an equality of convenience with the rest of the Public, & that they should enjoy the common advantage of having their letters delivered according to the direction these letters bear. Mine are all forwarded according to the direction which I was obliged to register in compliance with the old system`. Some slight traces of former mounting to the left edge of the first page, not affecting the text or signature, otherwise VG William Leader Maberly (1798-1885) British Army officer and Civil Servant. Secretary of the General Post Office from 1836. Maberly strongly opposed the introduction of penny post by Rowland Hill. Disraeli`s letter is evidently written following the abolition of the free-franking system on 10th January 1840.

LOUIS XIII: (1601-1643) King of France 1610-43. L.S., Louis, as King, one page, folio, Bois de Vincennes, March 1617, to Monsieur du Plessis (Armand Jean du Plessis de Richelieu, Cardinal-Duc de Richelieu, 1585-1642, French Clergyman and Statesman, King Louis XIII`s Chief Minister), in French. The King states that, since informing his correspondent of the events of the previous month, he has made a decision and explains that an individual who had armed without his permission has now decided to be obedient and abandon his plans. He continues `I wanted to bring relief to my people, and this is my principal aim, limiting the activities of my army in order to bring the campaign to a speedy conclusion. The towns....will be taken over as I ordered. You should make this known to those under your influence.` In concluding the King remarks `Remind my subjects of my affection for them, and of the wisdom of continuing on the path of loyalty and obedience towards me.` With address to the verso and very slight traces of red wax seal. Four neat slits to the left margin, not affecting the text or signature. About VG

British Army officer, Lieutenant General during the American War of Independence where he led the relief column at the Battle of Lexington and Concord, Commanded a division during the Battle of Long Island and led the storming of Fort Washington. L.S., Northumberland, one page, 4to, Alnwick Castle, 20th October 1804, to Robert Pearson. The Duke states that he will be very happy if his estates in the Manor of Newburn can contribute to Pearson`s amusement in hunting, `provided this does not interfere with the hunting of Lord Darlington and some other Gentlemen to whom I have granted a similar permission some years ago. This, however, I believe cannot possibly be the case, as I think they are Fox-hunters; with whom Harriers, of course, cannot interfere.` With blank integral leaf. Lee informs his correspondent that it would give him great pleasure to visit Georgia, `a state for which I have great affection`, although continuing `but my occupation is so engrossing that I now see no prospect of doing so. Photograph by Maull & Fox of London. Signed by Browne in dark ink to the lower photographer`s mount and dated 1899 in his hand. A.L.S., J Manners Smith, three pages, 8vo, Newbury, 7th December 1912, to Lauder. Smith states that he is pleased to hear that his correspondent has been awarded the Royal Humane Society`s medal `for your brave action in saving my life...a cutting about the presentation was sent to us today...I feel it is quite impossible to express how much I owe to you & shall never be able to discharge the debt of gratitude. The more I think of it the more I realise the risk you took for me.`; Thomas Orde Lawder Wilkinson (1894-1916) Canadian Soldier, posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross for his actions at La Boiselle, France, on 5th July 1916. Rare D.S., T. O. L. Wilkinson, in pencil, one page, small 8vo, n.p., 4th October n.y. (1915). The printed postcard takes the form of a letter giving various message options, the irrelevant ones struck through in pencil by Wilkinson. Signed and dated at the conclusion. Neatly laid down to a page removed from an autograph album; Frederick Roberts (1832-1914) British Field Marshal, Victoria Cross winner for his actions at the Indian Mutiny on 2nd January 1858. Signed by Limbu to a clear area in blue ink. Professionally matted in burgundy and framed and glazed in a plain wooden frame to an overall size of 14 x 22.5. Montgomery, General, Eighth Army, one page, 4to, Italy, 30th November 1943, being an original Eighth Army Personal Message from the Army Commander, intended to be read out to all troops. Montgomery`s message appears in four points, in part, `The time has now come to drive the Germans north of Rome....we will do our part in a manner worthy of the best traditions of the Eighth Army and the Desert Air Force. The enemy has been outfought by better troops ever since we first landed in Sicily, and his men don`t like what they are getting....WE WILL NOW HIT THE GERMANS A COLOSSAL CRACK. Good luck to you all. MACARTHUR DOUGLAS: (1880-1964) American Military Leader of World War II. Vintage signed postcard photograph, being a reproduction of a pencil drawing of a head and shoulders portrait of MacArthur in uniform. Signed in bold blue fountain pen ink with his name alone to the lower white border. A Republic of the Philippines postage stamp featuring MacArthur`s portrait is affixed to the lower right corner of the image, postally cancelled at MacArthur, Leyte, 20th October 1950. The cancellation slightly affects the conclusion of MacArthur`s signature. With a second commemorative cancellation to the verso. A slight surface crease runs horizontally across the image. Together with John J. Pershing (1860-1948) American General. T.L.S., John J. Pershing, one page, 8vo, Paris, 22nd June 1937, to Major General Charles S. Farnsworth, on the printed stationery of the European office of the American Battle Monuments Commission. Pershing states that his correspondent will have received an invitation to be present at the unveiling of a monument erected on Montfaucon, further commenting `If you could realise the personal satisfaction it would give me to have you present with others who held important positions in the army during those grilling days of the Meuse-Argonne battle, I am sure your wish to be here would be all the greater.` With blank integral leaf. Large 10 x 13.5 signed and inscribed photograph, the image depicting Lindemann in a semi-profile head and shoulders pose wearing his Nazi uniform and cap and Knight`s Cross. Photograph by Erich Borm and bearing his blindstamp to the image and pencil signature to the lower photographer`s mount. Boldly signed (`Lindemann, Senior General and Officer Commanding the 18th Army`) in dark fountain pen ink to the lower photographer`s mount and with a lengthy inscription in German, `To the outstanding commander of the brave 126th Infantry Division, Herrn Generalleutnant Hoffe, in memory of the difficult, but successful battles to the South of Lake Ladoga and outside Leningrad` Dated in his hand Head Quarters, 28th November 1943.
