The Andy Chapman Collection1970 Moto Guzzi 757cc V7 SpecialRegistration no. VRL 747HFrame no. VM59BSEngine no. 16125Moto Guzzi's venerable 90-degree v-twin originated in the early post-war years, and its descendants are still around today powering the company's latest generation of motorcycles. Guzzi's transverse v-twin had been conceived to power a lightweight three-wheeler intended for the Italian army, and only later was it reassessed for possible motorcycle use. The first motorcycle to make use of this remarkable engine, the 703cc V7, appeared at the International Milan Show in December 1965. The work of Ing. Giulio Carcano, the man who had masterminded Guzzi's spectacular V8-engined Grand Prix racer, the V7 was the biggest and fastest roadster ever to come out of the Mandello del Lario factory. Its military origins had dictated that the engine should be both simple and easily maintained; indeed, accessibility was outstanding while the shaft-drive transmission, another military requirement, provided virtually maintenance-free running. The Guzzi v-twin would undergo a seemingly never-ending series of enlargements, the first of which, to 757cc, occurred in 1969 on the Special/Ambassador models. Currently showing a total of 29,815 kilometres (approximately 18,500 miles) on the odometer (at the time of cataloguing/photography), this V7 Special was acquired by the vendor in 2019. Following a period of inactivity, the machine will require re-commissioning to a greater or lesser extent, or possibly more extensive restoration, before returning to the road and thus is sold strictly as viewed. c.1934 Zündapp 797cc K800Registration no. not registeredFrame no. 20113 (overpainted)Engine no. 140754 (and engine/gearbox mating number)•Rare, top-of-the-range luxury tourer•An older restoration•Requires recommissioningFounded at the height of WWI to manufacture armaments, Zündapp found a new role post-war as a producer of motorcycles under the direction of new owner, Dr Fritz Neumeyer, building its first machine, a Levis-powered two-stroke, in 1921. The firm began making its own engines in 1924, selling more than 10,000 machines that year, and at the Berlin Motor Show in 1933 introduced the first of the horizontally opposed, four-stroke twins that it is best remembered for. These formed part of an extensive and diverse range of models, all but the smallest two-stroke being designated by the letter 'K' (for kardan, meaning 'shaft'). Among the models premiered were the K400 (398cc) and K500 (496cc) sidevalve twins, both of which employed designer Richard Küchen's unconventional all-chain four-speed 'gearbox' and, as the designation suggests, shaft final drive. Introduced at the same time was another Küchen design: a horizontally opposed four made in 598cc (K600) and 797cc (K800) capacities. Common to all the larger models and eminently suited to withstanding the stresses and strains imposed by travel on unmade roads, the robust frame and girder forks were made of pressed steel, an advanced feature at the time. The new Zündapp range was an enormous success and in September 1933 the firm produced its 100,000th machine, quite an achievement after little more than a decade as a motorcycle manufacturer. The larger Zündapps saw service in substantial numbers with the German Army during WW2, military versions being identified by a 'W' (Wehrmacht) model suffix. An older restoration, since deteriorated, this example of Zündapp's rare Art Deco masterpiece has clearly not been used for a considerable period; accordingly, the machine will require careful recommissioning or potentially restoration prior to further use and thus is sold strictly as viewed. Prospective purchasers must satisfy themselves as to the condition, completeness, authenticity and compatibility of this Lot's component parts prior to bidding. The odometer reading of 4 kilometres is presumed the distance covered since restoration, while the shaft drive is additionally numbered '29404' and '6/38'. The machine is offered with a 2016 Motorrad Classic article by Alan Cathcart and a photocopied technical article.Footnotes:All lots are sold 'as is/where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to bidding.REQUEST A TRANSPORT QUOTEPlease click the link to request a transport quote from our recommended transport company, Moving Motorcycles. To request a UK or European shipping quote - Moving MotorcyclesTo request an International shipping quote - ShippioThis Lot will be auctioned on Sunday 13 October starting at 11am GMT.This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: * N* VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium.N If purchased by a UK resident, this machine is subject to a NOVA declaration, whilst the responsibility of submitting the NOVA rests with the Buyer to do so, Bonhams will facilitate the process by engaging an agent (SHIPPIO) to undertake the NOVA and C88 (customs) application if applicable on the Buyer's behalf. Ca. 1800 - 1815.A flintlock pistol with a smoothbore barrel. There is a stamped crowned cypher on the lock plate immediately underneath the powder pan, though the letter beneath the crown is unclear. This style of gun is similar to the New Land Pattern pistol adopted by the British Army in the early 1800s but lacks a retaining spring for the ramrod and ordinance marks, suggesting that it was a civilian purchase possibly for an officer or member of the East India Company. The gun has no other visible identifying marks. WW2 Pathfinder Henry Shackleton 405 sqn bomber command signed stunning 12 x 8 inch colour Lancaster in flight photo. In 1940 Henry left school and volunteered as a Pilot at the age of 18 and 9 months, receiving his Wings as a Pilot Officer at Cranwell College one week before he was 19. He was then sent to North Battlefield, Saskatchewan as a Flying Instructor. By coincidence his elder brother and sister were born in Saskatchewan, though he was born in the U.K. In 1943, with 1,500 flying hours, he was posted to Middleton St George, Darlington, U.K. to join the R.C.A.F 419 Moose Squadron where his R.A.F. crew did 18 bombing trips in their Halifax to Germany and Italy without mishap. Thet then volunteered to join Pathfinders and were posted to R.C.A.F 405 Squadron at Gransden Lodge. 4 Pathfinder trips on Lancasters, target Berlin, went without mishap, but on the 5th one on January 30/31st 1944 they were attacked by two nightfighters, resulting in the loss of use by their port wing forcing him to shout, "abandon aircraft". His Wireless Operator, Red Williams put on his navigator chest parachute, then decided to get a bar of chocolate from his desk, taking off his parachute to put it in his tunic, then replacing his chute at which he heard an explosion as Henry was blown out of the cockpit. ( He obviously was suffering from lack of oxygen as the Lancaster was in a spiralling dive ) He jumped out of the hole in the cockpit and landed in a Berlin street, immediately taken prisoner. After being blown out, Henry pulled on what he thought was my parachute release, but it was release of his seat harness! When it fell away he searched again and to his relief the parachute opened before he fell onto a bush in a Berlin Park. Henry hid by day and walked by night but on the third night, just after people had come out of their shelter during another bomb attack, some children surrounded him, and he was taken to the Burgermasters house, where kind ladies bathed his face and gave him food. (One could assume they were thinking of their own sons bombing the U.K. and he always feel this should be said.) However, a pompous and drunken Army Officer took Henry to a Berlin police cell (which was warm!) A few days later he met Red Williams at the Frankfurt Interrogation Centre, who told him he had been taken to a crashed Lancaster and understood their other five crew members had lost their lives. Thereafter Henry spent until March 1945, as a P.O.W. in Stalag Luft 3. They all took part in the long march to the Germans last stand in Berlin, from which 400 of them escaped from the Camp across the river to the Americans. Good condition Est. Good Condition. He died in New York, and is buried in Trinity Church cemetery, Manhattan. Without doubt the two are General Maunsell's' (20th century note loosely inserted).
Byroniana.- Army List (The), for April 1831 [&] May 1832, 2 vol. in 1, Sir John Cam Hobhouse's annotated copy, with his notes on endpapers and name at foot of list headed "War Office Feb 25th 1833. Distribution of the British Army", and numerous crossings-out and annotations to text, a few newspaper cuttings stuck to endpapers, contemporary half calf, rubbed, 8vo, 1831-32. *** Hobhouse is best known for being a close friend and travelling companion of Lord Byron. He was elected as an MP in 1820 following a spell in Newgate Prison for breaching parliamentary privilege, and later sevred as Secretary of War in Lord Grey's administration in 1832. It seems likely that this copy was his own working copy which he would have used at the time he was reforming the army.
Russian White Army Posters.- 4 Propaganda Posters of White Army Commanders, comprising General Anton Ivanovich Denikin, General Aleksei Maksimovich Kaledin, General-Lieutenant Baron Petr Nikolaevich Vrangel, and General-Lieutenant Vladimir Zenonovich Mai-Maevskii, tear to lower corner of Denikin, a few spots, some minor fraying at edges, one 815 x 605mm, others 640 x 405mm, [c.1919-20] (4) *** A rare surviving collection of commemorative White Army posters, relating to the post-Revolutionary civil war of 1918-1920. General Petr Vrangel was a commander of the Caucasus Volunteer Army in 1919, but was forced to resign in early 1920. General Denikin briefly took his place but was also removed from office and Vrangel was reinstated as commander of the White Army. General Kaledin was a Cossack general and the poster commemorates his position as first elective Cossack leader (Ataman) of the Don Cossack Host, giving his date of death 29th January 1918 (11th February in the Gregorian calendar; he committed suicide). Mai-Maevskii also had some successes at the start of the war but by 1920 he was removed from office and died shortly after, either by suicide or heart failure. Provenance: Brought back to the UK by a British army officer operating in the South of Russia during the civil war; and by descent until 2008.
Russian White Army Poster.- Admiral Aleksandr Vasilievich Kolchak, Supreme Commander, laid down on cloth, minor loss to head affecting one letter, a few tears, 800 x 640mm, framed and glazed, [c.1919-20]. *** In contrast to their Bolshevik equivalent, White Army posters are exceptionally rare as almost all were destroyed by the Soviets. Dating from the height of the civil war, this poster depicts Admiral Kolchak, the head of state of "White" Russia from 1918 until he was executed by the Bolsheviks early in 1920. Provenance: Brought back to the UK by a British army officer operating in the South of Russia during the civil war; and by descent until 2008.
