A 19th Century Seaman's chest, iron bound with treated canvas covering, the rising top bearing brass plaque inscribed "Captn Graves R.N." opening to reveal a paper lined interior over a heavy lock plate inscribed "Registd No 3637 E & W Seagrove's" (makers) and two small lockable drawers (Provenance : Captain Thomas Graves whilst Superintendent of Ports at Malta was attacked by seamen Giuseppe Meli and died of his injuries August 28th 1856, 3 days after the attack. For full provenance please see condition report online) CONDITION REPORTS Thomas Graves was born in Belfast, and joined the Royal Navy in 1816 when he was just 14 years old. In 1827 he was promoted to lieutenant and served aboard HMS Adventure, where he surveyed the Patagonian coastline and traded commodities for artefacts with the tribes of the Tierra del Fuego. As Lieutenant Commander he surveyed the Mediterranean aboard HMS Mastiff and HMS Beacon. In 1846 he was promoted to Captain, and took charge of HMS Volage and HMS Ceylon. And in 1853, at the age of 51, he was handed a new command - Superintendent of Ports at Malta. But in 1856, tragedy struck. He had ordered a boat belonging to Giuseppe Meli to be hauled up for 15 days for overcharging a passenger. While hauled up, the planks of the boat dried rendering the vessel unseaworthy, and Meli's livelihood was ruined. Seeking revenge he stabbed Captain Graves in the abdomen, perforating his small bowel. Graves was treated by two local doctors who, unable to assess the depth of the wound, dressed it and sent him home. At his residence he was visited by an English doctor and an army surgeon. He died at his residence in Floriana on August 28 - three days after the attack.Meli was arrested for murder, but during his trial his lawyer convinced the court that it was the negligent treatment administered to him by the doctors - rather than the knife - that killed Captain Graves. With the jury finding him guilty of severe bodily harm, the court sentenced Meli to nine years' hard labour. The oak iron-bound trunk was made by E & W Seagrove, naval outfitters of Portsea, near Portsmouth. It bears a brass plaque to the lid engraved Cpt Graves RN

Private Ashley and Major J. A. Orr-Ewing were going to the rescue of Lieutenant J. S. Forbes and Corporal A. Baxter, whose horses had been shot from under them whilst crossing the drift on a mission to reconnoitre a nearby river island. In doing so, both Ashley and Major Orr-Ewing were wounded and in turn a ten-man rescue party went to their aid. Of the fourteen men involved in what started as a routine two-man reconnaissance mission, three men were killed: Major Orr-Ewing, Corporal Baxter and Private W. F. Lane. All but three of the eleven survivors of the Kheis Drift skirmish were wounded by rifle fire coming from the Boer occupied island. Ashley rejoined the Yeomanry as a commissioned officer and served in Palestine in 1917. He retired from the Army with the rank of Major and settled in his home town, Bedford.

Several of the above mentioned drawings are reproduced (with some variance) as illustrations in these two-volumes. The watercolours of a Lioness and Royal Tiger have been drawn on a leaf from James Welsh's original journal and stitched into this album. To the verso of the same leaf he has written an account of his visit to the Rajah of Coorg and sketching of the Royal pets: 'The Lioness has a capital House in the Fort, with a boarded floor & glass windows & seems to be the greatest Pet. I could not get her to sit or stand a minute & have not therefore done her justice in my hasty sketch.' This Lot is offered with a two-volume reprint in paperback of James Welsh's original work.
