A SET OF FIVE .900 STANDARD GOLD MEDALLIONS in fitted case, commemorating the 5,000,000 Volkswagen produced, each cast with "Funf Millionen Volkswagen 1945 1961" and with image of VW "Beetle", the other side wide head profile and signature, total weight of medallions 135.5g These were presented to Mr R H Berryman who was sent to the VW factory in Wolfsburg in 1947 after WWII. He was detailed to get production going at the plant to supply the needs of the army, other occupying forces, the Control Commission and some for the German economy. Because the factory had been used in the production of mortar bombs, V1 and V2 parts it had been scheduled for demolition, however cars needed to be made somewhere and if not in Germany then they would have to be paid for. The Government was therefore keen to prove that sufficient numbers of cars could be made at the plant, so that it would not be demolished. Mr Berryman was instrumental in getting the factory going again, utilising the machines that had not been destroyed in the war and organising the workforce, thereby saving the factory from demolition. He had served in the RAF during WWII and previously worked for General Motors so was experienced in mechanics and the car industry. A photocopy of his original Movement Order dated Feb 1947 and his own typed account of some of the highlights of his early days at the factory are with this lot.

Robert van ‘t Hoff (1887-1979), Dutch architect and furniture designer, who from 1917 became an influential member of De Stijl movement. Family wealth allowed him to subsidise the publication of De Stijl journal, but for political reasons he split with the founder Theo van Doesburg in 1922, withdrawing from artistic activity and declaring himself an ‘ex architect’. He spent much of the rest of his life in England promoting his anarchist ideas, settling permanently in Hampshire from 1937. This intriguing personal archive of photographs demonstrates an artist with a designer’s eye for line and form, light and shade, and also contains previously unknown photographs of van ‘t Hoff himself. * Fougasse (pseud., really Cyril Kenneth Bird, 1887-1965). ÒThe Grand Ballroom of the Hotel SublimeÓ, a pair of pen & ink drawings on a single sheet of paper, one showing the ballroom full of people, with an orchestra playing on the stage, the other showing it empty, save for a figure seated at a desk, latter signed in lower left-hand corner, each drawing 146 x 253mm (5.75 x 10ins), mounted. Published in `Punch’ on 8th November 1939, as no. XIII in a series entitled ÒThe Changing Face of BritainÓ; the drawings were then published collectively by Methuen in 1940. British cartoonist Cyril Kenneth Bird was best-known for his editorship of Punch magazine and his iconic World War II propaganda posters. He was educated at Cheltenham College and King’s College, London. While at King’s College he attended evening art classes at the Regent Street Polytechnic and at the School of Photo-Engraving in Bolt Court. He was seriously injured at the Battle of Gallipoli during World War I and invalided out of the British Army (his pen name is based on a type of mine called a fougasse). He first contributed to Punch in 1916, while convalescing, and also contributed to several other British newspapers and magazines, including the Graphic and Tatler. In the course of the 1920s and 1930s, his drawings evolved from the traditionally representational to the innovative, spare style for which he became so popular. He became art editor of Punch from 1937 to 1949, then editor until 1953, and was the only cartoonist ever to edit the magazine. During World War II, he worked free-of-charge for the Ministry of Information, designing humorous but effective propaganda posters, including the famous ÒCareless Talk Costs LivesÓ series. He was awarded a CBE for this work in 1946. He also illustrated and co-wrote several humorous books with W.D.H. McCullough. (1)

* Page (William, Private in the 38 Regiment of Foot). An unusual archive of fifteen autograph letters from the low-ranking soldier William Page to his parents Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Page (corkscrew maker and later steel toymaker), Wolverhampton, 27th May 1807 to 1st July 1812, written in a reasonably clear hand that improves over the years, describing details of his life and health and colleagues and wishing his parents and friends well, sometimes asking for money and usually signing himself as their `undutiful son’, the first three letters written from Lichfield and Alton, one letter written from Bandon, Ireland, six letters from Guernsey (Doyle Barracks and variously in Captain Rogers, Captain Wrench’s, Captain Taylor’s and Captain Forster’s Company, 2nd Battalion, 38th Regiment), one letter from Oxford, and one each from Lisbon, Sobigol, Nava Froas(?) and Coinbra, together with a letter from a friend Thomas Watson writing to his parents on his behalf giving them an update on his situation in June 1807 and a clearly written letter by a colleague, Thomas Morris, from the plains of Almeida, 21st May 1811 (written to Morris’s wife), plus a fragment of a letter from Page to his parents in Ireland, all somewhat soiled and with numerous fold splits and occ. chips and tears, many with indistinct name or date strikes, a total of approx. 38 pp., mostly folio, plus two unusual period corkscrews, presumably made by Joseph Page, one with a screw-thread fitting into a purpose-made case and loop handle, the other with a butterfly screw nut through upper stem, both approx. 8cm. Included with the bundle of letters is an old bible page with some family notes written to blank verso: `Benjamin Page, the son of Joseph and Mary Page, born 31st March 1806. Hannah, wife of the above, daughter of Joseph and Ann Lloyd, born 25th September 1806. Benjamin Page, died February 2nd 1869’. Benjamin Page who is described in one of William’s letters as `always my favourite’ of an unknown number of brothers was only a baby when William joined the army. This unusual collection of letters from a low-ranking soldier, while containing much of family concerns, also gives good insight into his army life and concerns. Letter one: `...I have been very ill for this two days with a very violent purging & other pains for these last two or three nights I have up and down every five or ten minutes for the living is so unregular to what I have been used to and the duty so very strict that I am really weary of my life tho’ there is plenty of meat and bread but you are put in the rooms from the [?] & nobody to cook for you but you are obliged to cut a bit of [?] & frizle it how you can that is a Soldiers Living from Year to Year without any [?] Except you can buy them yourself which is unpossible for we get but one shilling & 7d a week besides your Bread Meat & Washing which the pay for themselves & out of that small trifle you have pipe clay & oil & many other small articles and if you have any Small Beer you must pay a penny a pint & what money I thought of Receiving what stopt for I cursed thing or another I have not settled yet...’ (27th May 1807). Letter fifteen: `...I was obligated to go into the rear owing to having a rupture come on by hard Marching and heavy fatigues which rendered me incapable of Marching with my regiment so I was sent to General Hospital but was well in health three Days after I left the Regiment I got to be a Clerk in the Commissary Department and had a guinea per week wages besides my corporals pay from the regiment at which place I continued for five months and was allowed besides my wages what provisions Spirits & wine I wish for my Own use and a friend if I Choosed During which time I saved more than Eleven Guineas which I have by me at this time and ten months pay Due at the Regiment which would be of great service to me if please god I was at Home Again...
