Rorke`s Drift. An album compiled by Winifred Warneford, containing drawings, newspaper cuttings, portrait photographs and photograph views, mostly concerning life in Ireland and the Cape Colony between 1872-1900, including a 2pp. ALs written by Walter Alphonsus Dunne to [Gonville] Warneford, dated `Rorke`s Drift, 24 Jan. `79` providing a first hand account of the historic defence of Rorke`s Drift, `About 1000 of the Kafirs came on here + attacked us on the same day (22nd). We had got about 2 hours notice + fortified the place with [.] of grain, Biscuit boxes, etc.` and describing the aftermath, `The fight was kept up all night + in the morning the Kafirs retreated leaving 351 dead bodies.`, contemporary half morocco gilt, folio Walter Alphonsus Dunne (1853-1908) was Assistant Commissary Officer at the time of the attack on Rorke`s Drift. He was mentioned in despatches for his role in the battle and recommended for the Victoria Cross, although he did not receive it. He retired in 1908, having attained the rank of Colonel in the Royal Army Service Corps. Gonville Warneford (1872-1904) was the son of Captain W.J.J. Warneford, resident magistrate at the Cape Colony. Gonville Warneford became Captain of the Indian Staffs Corps and Assistant Political at Aden.
Anonymous Songs Of The Veld - Rare Boer War Volume Small 8vo. This first edition is an extremely rare volume of poems which first appeared in `The New Age`, a liberal and anticolonialist periodical, and published in book form in 1902. The poems leaked war time information about the atrocities committed by the British army on the civilian population, to the outside world. Those poems written by South Africans were anonymous to prevent prosecution under martial law. The South African contributors include C.Louis Leipoldt (his first published poem), Alice Greene, Betty Molteno, Anna Purcell, Dr. F.C.Kolbe and others. The book was published for the 304 subscribers listed in it, and there were probably not many more copies printed as the sentiments expressed in it were hated by the British and it was banned in South Africa. It is thus one of the very scarcest Boer War items in first edition. It is not in the Hackett Bibliography of South African War Books. It was republished in 2008 by Marthinus van Bart, jounalist for `Die Burger`. The reprint is done beautifully with a well researched commentary on the background to the book and it`s various contributors. Van Bart located 2 copies of the first edition in the archives of UCT and Stellenbosch University (the latter used for the reprint) but was unable to find one in the private sector. This copy is bound in two tone leather and is in very nice condition. The front hinge is slightly cracked but firm and there are a few very neat small pencil annotations mainly to identify the poets. A most desirable item. Very Good London New Age Press 1902 Reserve: $800 Click here to view further details and to bid
R.W.F.Droogleever The Road to Isandhlwana- Colonel Anthony Durnford in Natal and Zululand 14.5 X 22.5cm Colonel Anthony Durnford has received much of the blame for the disaster at Isandhlwana in the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879. Was it justified, or was he a convenient scapegoat for the incompetence of higher officers, since he was longer alive to defend himself? Durnford arrived at Isandhlwana camp with hsi column after Chelmsford had already advanced, and decided to make a sortie in search of what he believed to be a minor Zulu force threatening Chelmsford`s rear. He discovered it was not a minor force, but the main Zulu army, which chased after the retreating native horsemen towards the exposed camp. The lines of defence were soon broken and the camp destroyed. Durnford fell on the field, and the inconclusive evidence on his actions threw his reputation, already doubtful, into the realms of controversy. Acknowledgements and Preface-272 pages text with supporting photographs and maps. Near Fine. Very Good London Greenhill Books 1992 Reserve: $20 Click here to view further details and to bid
Ian Bennett Eyewitness in Zululand-The Campaign Reminiscences of Colonel W.A.Dunne,CB South Africa, 1877-1881 14 X 22.5cm The reminiscences of Colonel Walter Dunne were discovered after lying hidden in the archives of the Royal Corps of Transport for nearly a century. Written for the first issues of the Army Service Corps Journal in 1891, they provide a rare insight into some seldom recorded aspects of the campaigns in South Africa between 1877 and 1881. A young commissary in his mid-twenties, Dunne was to be unique among Imperial officers in that he was engaged in all the wars fought during the period, the last Kaffir War, the Zulu War, the Sekukuni War and the first Anglo-Boer War. He took part in the celebrated defence of Rorke`s Drift, when he was recommended for the Victoria Cross. Two years later he was at Potchefstroom in the Transvaal, where 213 British troops hedl out for 96 days against the Boers in a tiny makeshift fort the size of a tennis court. After suffering 75 killed and wounded they were forced to surrender only by the approach of starvation. Illustrated with 50 photographs, contemporary engravings and maps. Foreword by Major General Julian Thompson.-Frontispiece.192 pages text with supporting illustrations and maps. Very clean copy.
