13th century A.D. Composed of a delicate hoop, carinated shoulders and biconical bezel, elliptical in plan with inset polished cabochon garnet. Cf. The V&A Museum, accession number 641-1871, for a similar ring set with a sapphire.1.86 grams, 25.44 mm overall, 19.84 mm internal diameter (approximate size British R 1/2, USA 8 3/4, Europe 19.38, Japan 18) (1 in.). Found while searching with a metal detector in Bossingham, Kent, UK, by Alan John Punyer on 14 September 2000.Disclaimed under the Treasure Act with reference no. M&ME 297. 19th century A.D. Comprising: one with an openwork D-shaped plaque, tendril and leaf detail with inset cloisons of ruby, sapphire, tourmaline and glass, penannular hoop with disc terminals, stamped '???' and other marks to the ring and shank; one with openwork triangular plaque with scrolled tendrils and central ropework star, pierced lobe finial, penannular hoop with lobe terminals, stamped lozenge to the lobe finial and others to the hoop. 20.8 grams total, 57-80 mm (2 1/4 - 3 1/8 in.). Acquired 1970s. Ex property of an Essex, UK, collector. The stones set in the D-shaped plaque are a mixture of gem cuts from several time periods, the earliest being Tudor. It is likely that they are the silversmith's accumulation from several pieces of older jewellery broken down for their metal and stones. [No Reserve]

Roman, 2nd century A.D. or later. The naturalistic pale yellow Sapphire engraved with the bust of the emperor in profile right. 4.93 grams, 24 mm (1 in.). Acquired in the 1980s. Ex European collection. Private collection of a London antiquarian. The reign of Commodus (177-192 A.D.) is typically associated with the end of the period in Roman history, the golden era of peace. He initially reigned jointly with his father Marcus Aurelius (177-180 A.D.), and later alone. Commodus cultivated a personality cult which culminated in his performance as a gladiator in the Colosseum. He was eventually assassinated by a wrestler in the baths, marking the end of the Nerva-Antonine Dynasty. He was succeeded by Pertinax.

EINBAND: Orig.-Samteinband mit vergoldeter, reliefierter Kupferplatte auf dem Vorderdeckel, mit 19 Schmucksteinen (Amethyst, Rauchquarz, Turmalin, synthetischer Saphir), Deckelkanten mit vergoldeter gravierter Fassung, hinterer Deckel mit 5 vergoldeten floralen Buckeln, zudem mit 2 vergoldeten Schließen sowie Ganzgoldschnitt. 34 : 26 cm. - De luxe copy, in 1 of 333 Arabic numbered copies. Splendid facsimile of the Gospel text written in gold on purple dyed parchment, decorated with portraits of the evangelists. Created around 800 at the behest of Charlemagne (742–814), in whose tomb it was buried by Otto III. was rediscovered. The magnificent binding was made around 1500 by the master blacksmith Hans von Reutlingen (1492–1524). Orig. velvet binding with a gilded, reliefed copper plate on the front cover, with 19 gemstones (amethysts, smoky quartz, tourmaline, synthetic sapphire), cover edges with gilded engraved setting, back cover with 5 gilt floral bosses, 2 gilt clasps and gilt edges. 34 : 26 cm.
