An exquisite Belle Epoque jadeite box by Cartier Paris, circa 1910, in the Russian style, the box hollowed out from a single piece of mottled greenish jadeite, with rose cut diamond and calibré cut sapphire hinges (three sapphires missing), the front thumb piece similarly set with a cabochon sapphire lock, the thumb piece signed 'Cartier Paris' with French pionon assay marks, maker's mark 'PD' From 1900 Louis Cartier and his brothers were enthralled by the work of Fabergé in St Petersburg. Following the appeal of their own unique garland style, they actively sought to create a range of jewels and bibelots inspired by Fabergé (see lot 231A). In 1904 Pierre began traveling to Russia to not only court the jewellery loving Russian aristocracy and royal family, but also to seek out Russian workshops to supply Cartier in Paris. A silver-mounted Japanese marine ivory combination vinaigrette and scent flask container, Meiji period (1868-1912), inset with gem stones including diamond, ruby, sapphire, garnet and turquoise, the bulbous carving with mice, on a silver pedestal base engraved with fleur-de-lys and inset with a mirrored panel, 8cm high, This extraordinary piece was probably made to order for the European market as it was set with gems and mounted in silver on the continent at a contemporary date, and comes complete with a specially fitted box.
A Russian silver samorodok cigarette case by Karl Gustav Lundell, of bark textured design, with cabochon sapphire thumbpiece, 84 kokoshnik assay marks for St. Petersburg 1908-1917, cyrillic maker's mark for Karl Gustav Lundell. Offered for sale with a valuation from Wartski dated 24th September 1964 stating the box is by Lundell. Karl Gustav Johansson Lundell (1833-?) was one of a number of Swedish Finnish workmasters employed by Fabergé. Having started his career in St Petersburg, chiefly as a maker of cigarette cases, Lundell became chief workmaster at the Odessa branch of Fabergé which opened in 1890 and closed in 1918.
