BEAU GESTEAustralian Daybill (15" x 40")Very Fine- Rolled Paramount, 1939Offered here is a colorful Australian daybill featuring an iconic portrait of Cooper as the title character. A poster with very clean artwork that has mild edge wear, including fraying, chipping in the upper left, and tiny tears with some backed by tape on the verso. This one also has some staining from water damage in the lower border areas. In this 1939 classic, based on the 1924 novel by P.C. Wren, the inseparable Geste brothers (Beau, John, and Digby, played by Gary Cooper, Ray Milland, and Robert Preston, respectively) join the French Foreign Legion after one of them steals a priceless sapphire from their adoptive mother. A virtual scene-for-scene remake of the 1926 version starring Ronald Colman, the 1939 film was shot on the same sets and in the exact locations in Yuma, AZ as the original. Immensely popular in the United States, the movie was banned in Mussolini's Italy as it presented the British in too positive a light, leading officials to fear that it could undermine the fascist ideology that their government was based on. CARTIER: SAPPHIRE AND DIAMOND CLIP, CIRCA 1940Of Persian inspiration, the central cluster of old brilliant-cut diamonds, issuing floral buds of cushion-shaped, circular, kite and oval-cut sapphires, accented by collet-set old brilliant-cut diamonds, signed Cartier London, numbered 4567 and 3643, maker's mark JC, principal diamond weighing 2.54 carats, remaining diamonds approximately 2.40 carats total, length 6.0cm, maker's caseFootnotes:Provenance: Emerald Joyce Henrietta Brittain Jones née Wallach (1902-1974);Thence by descentLots 1 - 11 belonged to Emerald Joyce Henrietta Brittain Jones née Wallach. Joyce was born in Allahabad, Utter Pradesh, India. Her father, William Wallach, was a Barrister in India. On 19th January 1924, she married Captain Jack Brittain Jones (1899-1975) of the Black Watch (1st Battalion), at a Society wedding at Middle Temple Church in London. In 1927, the couple had a daughter, Pauleen Victoria. By 1931, Jack and his family were living in India where Jack was Aide-de-Camp to Lord Willingdon, Viceroy of India. In 1931, George II of Greece (1890-1947) visited India where he met Jack and Joyce. From 1934, the correspondence from Joyce to George is loving and affectionate, clearly indicating that a deep and meaningful personal relationship had developed between them. In 1935, George II was divorced by his estranged wife, Princess Elisabeth of Romania (1894-1956), who cited desertion. Joyce and Jack also divorced in 1935, citing Jack's adultery. George II had become King of Greece in 1922, but in 1924 Greece declared itself a Republic, and the monarchy was abolished. Eventually the Greek monarchy was restored in 1935 so George returned as King. Joyce and the King then began to lead a very private life together in Greece, often at the Tatoi Palace, the Royal family's summer residence, situated thirty miles from Athens, where George was able to indulge his love of farming. Joyce reportedly knitted, read and sat quietly. She was well-liked by George's sister-in-law, Katherine, and regarded as one of the family. It is reported that Joyce refused to marry George II because she believed that a morganatic marriage, like that of Edward VIII and Mrs Simpson (also divorced), would be damaging to George's position as monarch. In 1941, Germany occupied Greece and George fled to Crete, facing many dangers including his potential capture. A British destroyer transported him into exile in Cairo, Egypt. Later in 1943, Joyce accompanied George to the United States of America as his quiet and inconspicuous companion. Joyce also accompanied George on a visit to South Africa. They had then moved to London, where Joyce engaged in war work as a Fire Warden. Joyce was a particular friend of Princess Marina, Duchess of Kent who was a Greek Princess by birth and a British Princess by marriage to Prince George, Duke of Kent. In 1946, a referendum restored the monarchy, and George II again returned to Greece as King. He desperately wanted Joyce to accompany him to Greece and put pressure on the British Government to permit her to join him. However, the Government was concerned to avoid political difficulties in Greece, and refused permission. Princess Katherine suggested that Joyce could live in Greece as her lady in waiting. Sadly, whilst waiting for a resolution and missing each other, George II died of a heart attack in his office in the Royal Palace in Athens and was buried at Tatoi Palace. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

LALIQUE: ENAMEL, PÂTE DE VERRE, SAPPHIRE AND DIAMOND BROOCH/PENDANT, CIRCA 1900The oval-cut sapphire, weighing 7.75 carats, set among white opalescent pâte de verre flowering buds and blossoms with blue enamel stamens, the cushion-shaped diamond stems issuing green to dark green enamel foliage, suspending from an associated chain with enamelled twisted baton links, signed Lalique, French assay mark (partially obscured), chain with French assay mark and maker's mark (partially obscured), later brooch fitting and pendant loop, some enamel loss, lengths: pendant/brooch 6.8cm, chain 47.5cmFootnotes:René Lalique (1860-1945) was the undisputed master of Art Nouveau jewellery design. Nature was a pivotal theme in his work, his appreciation stemming from time spent sketching in the French countryside during his childhood holidays. His work incorporates botanically correct depictions of plants and flowers, often representing less conventional aspects such as buds, stamens and contorted vines and branches, with a unique focus on the ephemerality of nature with wilting, humble wild flowers or seasonal decay. Here, the use of white anemone flowers, symbols of sincerity and fragility, frame the sapphire, enhancing the quality of this exquisite jewel. During the 1880's, Lalique worked for various manufacturers and passionately studied sculpture, marrying the daughter of a sculptor in 1890. It was around this time that he undertook experiments in glass, a natural development from his enamelling techniques, and from here his work begins to take on a strongly sculptural form. The pâte de verre, pioneered in the 19th century, is a painstakingly delicate process of cold-moulding glass and later vitrifying it with heat, and yields a uniquely translucent, quasi-ceramic quality, which can later be carved to achieve high definition and fine detail. This incorporation of an intrinsically valueless material into jewels with precious gemstones and metals demonstrates Lalique's desire to create an entirely new kind of jewel. For a similar example previously sold by Bonhams, please see Lot 20, a pâte de verre and sapphire anemone brooch, from the London Fine Jewellery Sale, 12th December 1997. See also Becker, V., 'The Jewellery of René Lalique', (Goldsmiths Company: 1987), ill.p. 33, 50, 82, 93 for similar examples by Lalique. Please note, this lot has VAT at a preferential rate of 5% on the Hammer Price and VAT at the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ** VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
