Although created by Zenith, the movement was extensively reworked by Rolex, with only half of the original Zenith parts retained. The date function was removed and a new, high precision balance and escapement was installed. The El Primero powered Daytona was also the first to feature a sapphire crystal to preserve its good looks. The ref. 16520 series were the last Rolex watches ever to be fitted with an out-sourced movement, lasting in the catalogue until the year 2000.
