A diamond and synthetic sapphire cluster ring, the oval cut royal blue sapphire of synthetic origin four claw set above a border of ten round brilliant cut diamonds, set in white precious metal to a cutaway mount and tapered shank of yellow precious metal stamped '18ct, Plat'; size J, total estimated weight of diamonds 1.80cts, cased The sapphire is a pure blue, bright and vibrant, evenly coloured, measuring 10.05 x 8.05 x 5.15mm; there is minor facet edge abrasion , and with a loupe polishing lines visible and shallow surface scratches. Estimated colour and clarity of the diamonds - H, VVS-SI. Gross weight 4.32g. The estimated weight of the sapphire is 3.50cts. Regrettably we do not have the laboratory facilities to test stones for treatment or origin, so I can only give my opinion based on observations with a 10x loupe. I have not seen any distinct straight &/or angled colour banding (which would indicate a natural origin) but neither have I seen distinct curved banding (a sure sign of synthetic production). This sapphire shows distinct pleochroic differentiation (this is a natural phenomenon of many coloured gem crystals, whereby the colour of the stone varies according to the angle of the crystal lattice through which it is observed; the stone cutter will normally ensure that the best colour is visible from the top; this effect is diminished by heat treating), so my guess is that it is unlikely to have been heat treated. However, I repeat, we do not have the facilities to test stones, and my opinion is not a guarantee!
