Despite the plethora of British samplers in existence very few can be linked to the tutelage of a particular person or school which this makes this group very interesting. The 'Hayle' samplers are all of a similar format, with narrow bands and square shaped motifs containing initials in the lower sections. They usually incorporate the name or the initials of the 'mistris' or dame as in this case with 'IH' in the lower register. Little is known of the Iuda Hayle, but the samplers usually range from 1680 to the late 1690s. The Fitzwilliam museum has three, one of which is almost identical in format to this one but which includes the words 'Judeth Hayle was my name' and is dated 1693, the others being 1691 and 1694. Mistress Hayle was probably a social rank below her students, as Edwina Ehrman's research at the Museum of London has established that the surnames of the embroiderers came from the landed families of the Ipswich area.
