A very rare George III Needlework Sampler,ÿby Elizabeth Bushell 1765. Elizabeth Bushell, afterwards Gaisford, mother of Thomas Gaisford Dean of Christ Church, worked with letters, numbers, geometric designs, floral bands and verse, "Learn to speak truth, There is nothing needs a Lye. The fault that was but one Grows two thereby" signed and dated, on linen, 10 1/2" x 8" (27cms x 20cms), and a miniature patch sample by the same hand with letters and numbers, signed and dated 1758, 3" (7cms) square. AN 18TH CENTURY SAMPLER comprising upper and lower case alphabet letters and numbers with horizontal decorative bands and a floral and foliate lower border, signed 'Sarah Whitehead Her Wo / rk in the year / 1778', 31cm x 20.5cm, unframed. Condition Report : Generally good condition; evenly toned; lighter lettering faded. A George IV period sampler, worked by Ann Murray, dated 1823, incorporating a verse 'Teach me to feel anothers woe/To hide the fault I see/ That mercy I to others show/That mercy show to me' and embroidered with a country house, Adam and Eve and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, flowers, trees etc. 36.5cm x 33cm.
An early 20th century sampler, worked by Madeline Doris Day dated Spring 1924, embroidered with the letters of the alphabet, verse, figures, rabbits, hens and ducks etc, 34.5 x 25.5cm, together with another sampler, 'Where Love is - God is', embroidered with rabbits, ducklings, flowers etc - probably by the same hand, 33 x 23cm.
