A Victorian sampler, Elizabeth Oliver 1847, verse, house, trees, baskets of flowers, etc. 19.5 ins x 15.25 ins (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: Generally in good condition. There is a small repair approximately 3 inches to the left of the fourth line of the verse and another small repair approximately 2 inches diagonally left of the word Elizabeth. These are fairly minor but visible.
A 19th century sampler, Elizabeth Rawlings work 1817. 27 cm x 32 cm, framed. CONDITION REPORT: There are several holes to the top left of the prayer around the left hand tree. There are further holes below the verse in the centre of the piece and a repair around the centre of the right hand tree. The remainder of the sampler is in generally good order.
A 19th century sampler, by E. Philips, house, numbers and alphabet. 16 ins x 7.5 ins. CONDITION REPORT: Other than being discoloured this sampler is in generally good order. There are no visible holes or repairs. The sampler does appear a little unfinished in places but not significantly. The piece is framed and glazed.
A mixed lot of various textiles, comprising; a silk embroidered Chinese bag, an openwork teapot cover, ""United Welcome Home"", featuring ship and flags, an album containing oriental silk mats and others, a crude sampler ""W. A presentation sampler, 1852, ""St. Stephen`s School - Westminster"", over the verse ""All things bright and beautiful ?"", and further inscribed ""Worked for the Revd. Wm. Tennant by the Girls of St. Stephen`s School, Westminster, 1852"", worked with jardinières of flowers, birds, trees, a portico and other motifs within a trailing strawberry border, in a glazed maple frame with silvered slip, 38cm x 33cm, 53cm x 47cm overall.
A sampler, ""Matilda Richardson, Born Nov. 7th 1813, Finished this Work June 1822"", worked with a verse flanked by pillars, a pavilion, animals, butterflies, flowering jardinières, trees and other motifs within a double border, in a glazed figured mahogany frame with gilt slip, 24cm x 33cm, 41.5cm x 50cm overall.
Three early 20th century framed needlework pictures, a sampler and two other pieces, the sampler in the Arts & Crafts style with central flowering jardinière, 31cm x 21.5cm, a pair of landscape embroidered pictures, 28cm x 18.5cm, another of terrace steps in a garden, 18cm x 12.5cm, all glazed and framed, together with an embroidered sewing bag and a small 3-compartment sewing bag. A 19th century petit-point and cross-stitch needlework sampler, with religious verse, flowers and birds within floral border, by Mary Boston age 11, 'May the 30 - ' (date unfinished), 41 x 33 cm in a glazed rosewood frame Condition Report AMENDED CONDITION REPORT Some discolouration around edge - hole approx 1 cm to edge of upturned heart motif in centre, various other very small holes throughout.
An 18th century alphabet sampler worked in cross-stitch with letters, numbers and the Lord's Prayer in French (truncated with an '& c') by Mary Gunning May the 8 44', 52 x 16 cm, later framed and glazed Note: believed to be Maria Gunning 1732-60 who with her sister Elizabeth were society beauties in Georgian London and married the Earl of Coventry and Lord Hamilton of Hameldon respectively. A label verso relates path of descent to the 20th century
A WILLIAM IV NEEDLEWORK SAMPLER with rows of numbers and letters above a religious verse and various pictorial designs, worked in polychrome threads, by Jane Ann Bailey, finished September 26th 1834, in an ebonised frame, under glass. 35.5cm x 33cm CONDITION: Fading and discolouration, several patches of deterioration, viewing advised.
