Emma Bridgewater Pottery in the Sampler and Pink Hearts designs to include a large pet bowl, a fluted dish, a candlestick, two plant pots, a cat on basket coddler and a mug (Qty). Mostly new old stock or as new condition and generally in good condition with no obvious damage or restoration. Odd pieces may have small damages though due to the nature of where it has come from, it is mostly in clean condition. Some pieces are crazed and whilst a lot arent crazed, it does vary from single lines to a whole piece being crazed also. Sadly, we are unable to check every single piece as for crazing but we do have two viewing days on Friday 18th October and also Wednesday 23rd October which everyone is welcome to attend. Provenance: this entire collection of Emma Bridgewater has been consigned to auction by a former retailer / dealer of Emma Bridgewater who has dealt in the pottery for many years before deciding to sell the entirity of the stock through our auction. In relation to postage, whilst we can post out ourselves, this pottery can be fairly large in size and heavy such as the gallon teapots. We are happy to post out smaller items or single lots, though please note, it would be at a cost of £25 + VAT per large box and the bigger lots would be require 2/3 large boxes. If buying more than 1 lot, we would recommending collection in person if possible where the deadline is 5 working days after the auction. This can be fairly flexible as long as you provide communication and collect within a week or so of the deadline. For people unable to collect larger quantities, it may work out more cost effective and safer to speak to a professional firm such as Postit4me for a no obligation quote who are a great local and customer friendly firm also.
A WILLIAM IV NEEDLEWORK SAMPLERby Agnes Sands, March 25 1830, worked in coloured threads with motto 'Modesty is a womans chief ornament', alphabet, numerals, house, flowers and other motifs, 42cm x 30cm, in wooden frame; together with a Victorian needlework sampler by Mary Phillipson, dated 1861, with alphabet, numerals and trees, 39cm x 29cm, in ebonised frame (2)
A wide mahogany framed sampler by Ann Whitehouse dated 1834, worked in coloured silks on a fine linen ground, in small stitches, bordered with a geometric stylistic vining pattern, set with a central verse, above her name and date, the sampler also embroidered with spot floral motifs, 31.5cm wide x 41cm high. Condition - the verse has a dark patch, there are other patches, the colours have faded in sunlight but stitching and background are undamaged or holed. The frame is good the slip has gilt missing.
Two Victorian framed samplers; a large colourful floral sampler with short verse by Mary Burton 1862 and a smaller sampler by Julia Warner aged 13, dated 1846?, large 1862 sampler 59cm wide x 61cm high. Condition - large petite point sampler in good condition with embroidery unfaded, smaller earlier sampler badly stained and some colours faded from sunlight.
A George III needlework sampler, by Sarah Brotherton, dated 1815, a simple graduated monochrome alphabet sampler, the top worked in fine embroidery stitches, the main part in fine button holestitch around the shapes of capital alphabet letters, her name and date, 25cm high x 18.5cm wide. Condition - the sun has bleached the top half and there are two moth holes near the base, the frame has two sides of veneer missing.
A 19th century cross stitch sampler by Mariah Williams age 15 dated 1879, worked with an outer geometric border, with rows of various alphabet letters and numerals., the lower half with large spot motifs of flowers, trees and birds with a central cartouche of a boy sitting with his dog. 63cm wide x 56cm high. Condition - the colour of the wools are still strong and there is no damage to the embroidery, the backing has become brown with age and light and possibly being over a fireplace.
Four 19th century needlework samplers, one by Ellen Anna Waite, 1878 and three by Louisa Harriet Waite dated 1877, 1880 and 1882. Louisa Harriet Waite samplers; two are alphabet samplers and one is a darning sampler with a motif of her school at the bottom. The Ellen Anna Waite sampler is alphabet with cross stitch motifs, one of a pony, largest sampler 41 x 20cm.
A large framed cross stitch sampler, by Helen Rae, dated 1851, worked mostly in red and green, with an ornate floral border around alphabet letters and numerals, large button hole letters and motifs, with a large central motif of a house, her mother and father by large floral pots, her name and date below, 40cm wide x 54cm high. Condition - some staining from the backing, a few colours have faded with sunlight but most are strong, the linen and stitches are undamaged. The frame appears in good order.
Two 17th century finely embroidered needlework fragments, possibly originally part of a casket or sampler, depicting a butterfly and flower on one and a bird and fruit on the other, in an oval gilt frame, largest fragment 13cm x 2.5cm high. Condition - both fragments are dirty from age and therefore difficult to see the original colouring of the stitches
An early 19th century sampler dated 07, by Sarah Baker, ‘Henry IV’s Soliloquy of Sleep’, together with a later smaller alphabet and spot motif sampler by Elizabeth Fleet aged 8, dated 1838, both framed, the earlier sampler worked on fine linen with a central verse embroidered in black thread, within a white floral border and large floral motifs amongst butterflies, finely edged with a vineous floral border, signed at the bottom Sarah Baker 07, 39.5cm wide x 46cm high. Condition - backing fabric has stained brown in places, smaller sampler embroidery colour has faded in places
An unusual charming circular gilt framed sampler, by Elizabeth Hughes, aged 11 years, dated 1795, worked in fine wools with a prayer verse at the top and an embroidered floral border with motifs of lions, stags, flowers, her name, date, age below, sampler 30cm diameter. Condition - the colour has faded due to sun light and there are stains around the sides. The frame and glass are loose and frame needs repair.
A framed cross stitch, alphabet sampler, by Kathleen Pearson, aged 8, dated 1911, worked in cross stitch with a decorative border of trees, vines, flowers with five spot motifs of blackbirds and a cat, the central panel mainly worked with rows of alphabet letters, finished with a small verse, name, age and date, 27.5cm wide x 48cm high. Condition - the silk has faded due to sunlight, there are some light stains to the edges, but there is no moth and both fabric and embroidery are good. The frame needs attention.
Two samplers; one late 18th century, the other early 20th century, the 18th century sampler by Elizabeth Chamberlain dated 1777, worked with an alphabet and framed verse bordered with vineous flowers, the later sampler by Elizabeth Wemyss Beck dated 1911, also worked with an alphabet, a verse and motifs of trees, birds, etc., earlier sampler 22.5cm wide x 32cm high, later sampler 39.5cm wide x 44.5cm high. Condition - early sampler some colours have faded and there is a small moth hole to the right edge, the later sampler there is slight fading to the colours, back ground fabric sound.
A framed Adam and Eve finely embroidered sampler, by Ann Elenor Molyneu, dated July 1830, Drayton, Oxon, embroidered on fine linen with multi-coloured silks and geometric stylistic floral border, with a short verse above a large central scene of Adam and Eve between the apple tree with large flowers and planters each side, above her name, date, with a smaller panel of spot motifs of dogs, birds and flowers below, 32.5cm wide x 43cm high. Condition - there is fading to some colours due to sunlight. Sadly there are moth holes under the verse and above the date, on some motifs the colour has run where the sampler has become damp. But the stitching has no moth holes and the rest of ground fabric is solid. The frame needs cleaning and waxing.
Two mid 19th century samplers worked by Elizabeth White, one dated 1842 aged 8 years, the other 1844 aged 11 years, both worked with a country scene of a house, birds, dogs and trees, the earlier sampler with a top panel of the alphabet and numbers and after a prayer, the later with a ‘Love to Parents’ a dated verse, 1844 sampler 41.5cm high x 33cm wide. 1842 sampler 43cm high x 38.5cm wide. Condition - ‘Love to Parents’, has various patches of moth holes, by the title, the middle section of the sampler edges and corners, the earlier sampler has no moth holes but the colours have faded slightly.
A Hannah Hack, York School, 1801 sampler, sewn within an embroidered black oval border, headed with York School above a row of numerals and two rows of lower case and capital letters, with a pastoral verse below then signed and dated, the entire sampler embroidered simply with fine black thread, 31cm wide x 28cm high. Condition - the backing cloth is stained and an area to the left is water stained, there are two moth holes, the frame needs attention. Needlework dirty and stained; seven small holes seen, affecting the quadrant backgrounds, only one seen affecting the oval stitched design, between the numerals and the alphabet; fabric looks fragile; the reverse wood/stiff-card damp-damaged; frame also damp-damaged, particularly affecting left vertical.
A framed sampler, initialled and dated 1874, worked with nine detailed pictorial motifs below a band of alphabet letters and numerals, each pictorial motif a different scene, a soldier and his wife, a white swan, a sailor paddling a boat, a bear under a tree, a pheasant and a central garland with initials and date within, 63cm wide x 62cm high. Condition - the backing fabric has all over staining, but the wool colours are unfaded and have no damage.
A 19th century sampler by Marion Ronald dated 1846, worked with various alphabets in cross stitch and buttonhole stitch, the lower section depicting a large thirteen windowed house surrounded by various spot motifs, a dog, birds, trees and vases of flowers in brown, red, blue and green, maple framed, 33cm wide x 39cm high. Condition - the central section a large stain across and down it, the roof has blue thread missing and the top of the sampler is faded, maple frame is good.
A rosewood framed sampler, dated 1842, by Martha Brook, aged 11years, worked above with large motifs of flower baskets and a bird, a vase of flowers beneath, surrounded by crowns, butterflies and chicks above two small cartouche worked cottages and central named and dated panel, all then bordered with vineous flowers, 41.5cm wide x 52.5cm high. Condition - many of the colours have faded in sunlight.
A framed 1835, dated sampler, embroidered by Mary Walker, worked in fine coloured silks, with a central verse and large three storey house, trees, dogs, deer and rabbits, below a panel of embroidered trees, flowers and birds and two narrow embroidered side borders. 30cm wide x 37cm high. Condition - the central verse background has discoloured with age and various silks have lost their original colour, the embroidery however is sound.
A spot motif and verse sampler, by Sarah Stow dated 1833, worked in multi-coloured silks, with a vineous border, a row of alphabet letters with a wide panel of spot motifs of birds and flowers above an embroidered verse with more embroidered motifs of trees and dogs below, the bottom embroidered with trees and birds with a central cartouche containing her name and date the sampler was finished. 31cm wide x 41cm high. Condition - the sampler is ground is marked and colour faded with sunlight, there is one small moth hole but the ground and embroidery solid. The sampler needs remounting. The frame needs attention.
A sampler with spot motifs and central cartouche, embroidered with Ann Richardson, her work aged 14 years 1824. A very finely embroidered large spot sampler worked with motifs of stags, trees, planters of flowers with in an embroidered border and central cartouche, 32cm wide x 41cm high. Condition - the linen is discoloured and some colours faded, possibly from hanging over a fire place near sunlight there are four small area of moth holes. It would benefit from conservation cleaning as the stitching is so fine.
