Fanney Martin, her work 1773, a needlework sampler, designed with a figure of William Shakespeare and a quote from The Tempest Act IV Scene 1 within an octagonal border the surround with a church, a clock, vases of flowers, two houses, trees, fruit and flowering plants, with coloured silks on a wool ground worked in cross, chain, long and short stitches, 54cm x 34cm, English, framed and glazed The figure of Shakespeare is likely to have been based on the statue by Scheemaker in Poets` Corner in Westminster Abbey, London.
A NEEDLEWORK SAMPLER worked in polychrome threads with rows of alphabet letters over a verse and pictorial elements^ bearing name `Mary Lawson` and date `May 2 1843` within a three quarter foliate border^ modern frame^ under glass. 54cm x 40cm Some discolouration however the threads vibrant in colour for reported age^ viewing advised.
A LARGE NEEDLEWORK SAMPLER centred by a pictorial depiction of a sailing ship and pier^ surrounded by two verses and pictorial depictions of plants and flowering baskets^ all within a foliate border^ bearing name `Jane Harrington` and date `1874` in a modern frame^ under glass. 66cm(sq) Some discolouration^ viewing advised.
AN EARLY VICTORIAN NEEDLEWORK SAMPLER worked in polychrome threads by Margaret Brown 1849^ with a row of alphabet letters^ a religious verse and pictorial depictions of plants and animals^ with maker`s name and date below^ all within a stylised foliate border^ card mount and modern frame^ under glass. 30.5cm x 30cm A degree of discolouration and fading but ok for age.
A GROUP OF THREE NEEDLEWORK SAMPLERS the first of oblong form worked in polychrome threads with foliate and geometric motifs^ unnamed and undated^ in a Hogarth type frame. 49cm x 25cm; the second with alphabet and numbers over pictorial designs^ worked in polychrome threads by J Todd^ aged 11 years AD 1818^ in a modern frame. 31cm x 25cm; the third with rows of alphabet letters and numbers worked in red and green threads by Mary E Bell^ Rosewain School` in a moulded frame. 23cm x 26cm (3) Each with fading and staining^ some deterioration to each^ the last sampler heavily deteriorated to right side.
