A 19th century needlework sampler - undated, probably mid-19th century, with a central bouquet of flowers above the initials 'EG', surrounded by animals, birds, flowers and baskets of fruit, within a floral meander border, 40.5 x 40.5cm, in a mahogany bevelled frame with gilt slip, 54.25 x 54.25cm.

A GEORGE III NEEDLEWORK SAMPLER PIN CUSHIONQUAKER, LATE 18TH / EARLY 19TH CENTURYof circular form, worked in brown and cream in the Quaker style with a bird and floral sprig in a vase, a flowering plant verso, the edge inscribed 'From the Retreat near York'4.5cm diameterCatalogue NoteThe Retreat in York was founded in 1792 by a Quaker tea merchant William Tuke. It opened in 1796 and was new kind of establishment for the mentally ill, a hospital which treated patients with great kindness and with minimal use of cruel restraint. It is thought that these pincushions were made by patients as a kind of occupational therapy. A related example can be found in York Museum.
A Victorian needlework sampler, signed by 'Charlotte Butler Aged 8' and dated 1851, worked in predominantly red, blue and green threads on a hessian ground with alphabet, numerals and cross stitch pattern, depicting baskets of flowers, trees and birds 56 x 51cm, framed and glazed Condition ReportThe frame with knocks and wear. With some fading to some of the pales colours and discolouration due to age and sun damage. Not viewed out of glazed frame. Hanging eyletts to the back a little loose and in need of attention.

Hogendorp and M.Van Dam and a George III needlework sampler by Charlotte Smith dated November 8th 1801,having a virtuous motto surrounded by a repeat pattern border and flower and tree motifs, Condition Report: watercolour has insect debris to the mount, oils are in rolled condition with creases, sampler has holes and staining
A framed cross stitch sampler, by Isabella Soskirk aged 11, dated 1884, worked mostly in red and blue, with alphabet letters and numerals in multicolour, decorative motifs in rows, with a lower motif of a floral and crown spot illustrations. Chunky wood measures 45.5cm wide x 38cm high. Condition - some dullness thrughout and staining in a few places, overall linen colour has faded with age but most stitching remains strong, the linen itself undamaged.
A framed cross stitch sampler, by Kate Jackson aged 14, dated 1896, worked mostly in reds, oranges, and greens, with an geometric Greco border around alphabet letters and numerals, rows of chain or link motifs, with a lower motif of a florals, vases and crowns. Wood frame painted in black gloss measures 39.5cm high x 43.5cm wide. Condition - some staining and loss of stitching in a few places at the border, where a few colours have faded with sunlight but most are strong, the linen itself undamaged.
Two 1927 cross stitch samplers with local interest: one performed by Elizabeth Lisler aged 13, from Settle, depicting two girls and a dog alongside a Bible excerpt, measures 117.75x21 inches, along with the other sampler by Mary, aged 8, depicting a house and some foliage motifs and two verses 16.5x21 inches. Their colours have faded and the linen is browning, though the pinks and reds of Mary's remain strong.
