Wisden Cricketers’ Almanack, often referred to simply as Wisden or colloquially as ‘the bible of Cricket’ is by far the best known reference book concerned with the sport of cricket and is one of the most famous and long running sports reference books published in the UK. It was founded in 1864 by the English cricketer John Wisden (1826-1884) as a competitor to Lillywhite’s Guide to Cricketers (see lot 811). Its annual publication has continued uninterrupted to the present day, including through the First and Second World War periods. The sixth edition was the first published under its current title; the first five were published as The Cricketer’s Almanack, with the apostrophe before the ‘s’. It has had only 15 editors in over 140 years, including Sydney Pardon for 35 editions (1891 to 1925) and Norman Preston for 29 editions (1952 to 1980). Matthew Engel is the current editor although Scyld Berry edited 2008 while Engel takes a sabbatical. Wisden has always been a small-paged but increasingly a very thick book (over 1500 pages in modern editions). The distinctive bright yellow cover has been carried since the 75th edition in 1938. In previous years, covers varied between yellow, buff and salmon pink. The 75th edition was the first to display the famous woodcut of two Victorian cricketers by Eric Ravilious on its cover. In 2003 the woodcut gave way to photographic portraits of a contemporary cricketer. In 2006 and 2007, a larger format edition has been published on an experimental basis. Wisden was acquired and published by Robert Maxwell’s publishing conglomerate, Macdonald, in the 1970s. Sir Paul Getty bought the company, John Wisden & Co, in 1993. They are now highly desirable collectors’ items. In May 2007 Graham Budd Auctions set a world record auction price by selling a collection from first year of issue for £120000. This lot represents another rare opportunity to instantly acquire a collection in its entirety.

A George III mahogany Carlton House desk, circa 1795, the fitted superstructure with cupboards and drawers over a leather inset writing surface on an adjustable ratchet above three long drawers, 100cm (39in) high, 145cm (57in) wide, 78cm (30Iin) deep. The Carlton House Desk takes its name from the Prince of Wales' (later George IV) Pall Mall residence which was given to him on his coming of age in 1783. Said to have been ordered by the Prince as a reward for one of his entourage, the desk is characterised by the U shaped form of the upper drawers and was usually made from mahogany or satinwood. Designs for this type of desk appear in both George Hepplewhite's Cabinet Maker and Upholsterer's Guide and Thomas Sheraton's The Cabinet Maker and Upholsterer's Drawing Book

Baker (James). A Picturesque Guide through Wales and the Marches; interspersed with the most Interesting Subjects of Antiquity in that Principality. The Second Edition; with Considerable Alterations and Additions, 2 vols., Worcester: Printed and Sold by J. Tymbs, 1795, vol. 1 with a letterpress title-page only, without the additional engraved title-page, viii + 186 pages, with two hand-coloured ribbon maps, and thirty-six hand-coloured aquatint plates, including two duplicates; vol. 2 without a title-page, comprising Introduction, 1 leaf, and text pages [5]-258, ending at the description of Downton Castle with the catchword "On", with thirty-five uncoloured aquatint plates, including three duplicated from Vol. 1, some light foxing, all the plates with tissue guards, in an excellent recent full calf binding by Habib Dingle, with a printed colophon on matching paper describing the binding and the insertion of some leaves of text into Vol. 2, small 4to. See Abbey, Scenery, 514. Abbey remarks on the "haphazard method of publication" of this attractive but fiendishly complicated book. His copy is in three volumes, Vols. 1 and 3 being second editions, all with letterpress title-pages. His Vol. 3 is comparatively short, with pagination continuous with Vol. 2, and he speculates that in the original printing it was regarded more a continuation of Vol. 2 than a separate volume. Our Vol. 1 paginates as his; our Vol. 2 is at variance with his pagination of Vols. 2 and 3. His copy contains only fifty-eight aquatint plates, all uncoloured. No List of Plates is given, and there is evidence that at least some of the plates were issued after the completion of the book. Very little exact information about other copies is available, but it seems that the number of plates and their subjects vary from copy to copy. Sold, therefore, not subject to return. (2)
