BADEN-POWELL ROBERT: (1857-1941) British Lieutenant General who, in 1899 during the Second Boer War in South Africa, successfully defended the city in the Siege of Mafeking. Later Baden-Powell founded the Scout Movement. Autograph Manuscript signed, with his initials BP, three pages, 8vo, Waiho Gorge, Westland, New Zealand, n.d. (1934), in pencil, on the printed stationery of the Glacier Hotel at the Franz Josef Glacier. Baden-Powell’s manuscript, with several corrections throughout, is entitled On a Glacier and states, in part, ‘As I write this I am sitting on a bluff on the shoulder of one of the great mountains which rear their snowclad heads high above me on every side. In front and below me runs a wide valley which is filled from side to side with a vast white sheet of ice; not the sort of ice you know at home but a jumbled mess of blocks and waves and walls of ice. It is a glacier, or frozen stream, a mile wide and twelve miles long from where it starts…..I can see three tiny moving specks some two miles away on the glacier. These are my two daughters mountain climbing with their guide. Dressed in breeches and puttees and heavy iron-shod climbing boots and armed with ice axes for cutting steps in the ice and with goggles to escape the glare of the snow, they love the excitement of clambering over those great slippery crags…..As for me I am taking it easy, sitting on my bluff and gazing over this mighty frozen torrent. There is a steady rumbling hum in the air, just like the roar of the traffic in London as you hear it sitting in Hyde Park. This rumbling is the sound made by that vast mass of ice slowly, slowly grinding its way over the rocks and stones beneath it. Watching it and standing on it you can perceive no movement, but moving it is all the same…..It behaves just as a stream of water does in running down a steep water course, the difference being that it is all a solid block of ice….’ The final page is lightly and neatly laid down to a page most likely removed from a scrapbook and the first two pages are neatly laid down to the left edges alongside. Some very light, extremely minor age wear, about VG The present manuscript was most likely written in preparation for Baden-Powell’s book Scouting Round the World (1935) which records the Chief Scout’s round-the-world voyage undertaken in 1934 in the company of his wife, Olave Baden-Powell, and their two daughters. The book features a description of his observations as his daughters climb the Franz Josef Glacier.

A set of 83 numbered magic lantern photographic slides documenting Sir Norman Watson's pioneering expedition to cross the Coastal Range, exploring the Mount Waddington area of British Columbia in 1934. These images were taken by the accomplished Alpine & Himalayan mountaineer and skier Eric Bentley Beauman who was a member of the successful expedition to climb Mount Kamet in 1931 (see lot 373). These slides probably would have accompanied his address given about the expedition to the Alpine Club on 30th October 1934. On slide 62 'Kamet Expedition' can be clearly read on the side of a tent. The crossing was completed by way of the Homathko Valley and river, Lake Twist, Scimitar valley, Scimitar canyon, the 2600m Col Fury Gap and the Franklin glacier down to Knight Inlet. Other members of the party were: Sir Norman Watson, Major E.J.King M.C, Clifford White (Canadian skier & mountaineer), Camille Couttet (Chamonix guide) Pete McCormick, trapper and Yukon 'old-timer'. At this time, the Coastal Range of British Columbia was wild and virtually undiscovered country. Those who knew the region advised the party not to go. Watson and King wrote a book about their experience "Round Mystery Mountain"A contemporary Canadian newspaper article best details the trip:KNIGHT INLET, B.C. April 21, 1934Three intrepid skiers of a British Alpine party arrived here Friday to complete the hazardous crossing of the Coast Range after five weeks of thrilling adventure.Sir Norman Watson, leader of the expedition; Wing Commander E B Beauman, RAF president of the Alpine Club of England; and Camille Coutet, famous Chamonix guide, picked a treacherous route through a nest of giant peaks and ice glaciers and emerged without accident. Accompanied by Major E J King M.C. of London and Clifford White of Banff, Alta; well known Canadian Mountaineer, the party left Tatla Lake, B.C, March 18 to pierce the wilderness. Their supplies were carried by a pack train of 21 horses, handled by four packers. They established a base camp near Fury Gap at the base of the mighty Mount Waddington, 13,260 feet, about 80 miles west of Tatla Lake. Major King and White remained at the base camp in reserve. The packers returned to Tatla Lake and the three daring skiers penetrated one of the wildest mountain regions of North America. Watson and his two companions struggled against severe weather as they negotiated dangerous Fury Gap. They were delayed several days by driving blizzards and were forced to make camp in the half-shelter of snow laden rock ridges. Finally, as the weather moderated, they made their way to the crest of the pass, approximately 7,200 feet. Below them stretched myriads of glaciers dotting the slopes of Mount Waddington, once known as Mystery Mountain because the existence of such a giant peak in the British Columbia was doubted by all but the few who had entered the wild and beautiful district. The men made their way 25 miles down mighty Franklin glacier on skis. Though they encountered better weather on this part of the journey, they needed all their experience to avoid yawning crevasses and ever threatening avalanches. They neared sea level in safety and made their way to Knight Inlet, which winds about 170 miles north of Vancouver. The trip of more than 25 miles to this small settlement was comparatively easy.Sir Norman and his companions planned to fly south by seaplane to Vancouver today. They intended to get in touch as soon as possible with Major King and White at the Fury Gap base camp, notify them of the successful crossing and arrange for their return to civilization. " In the 1930s there still existed areas of largely undiscovered wilderness. British Columbia provided those intrepid enough, a taste of what the early explorers must have experienced. These slides show all stages of the expedition, the men, their basic equipment, the pack horses and wonderful mountain scenery. This is a unique set of images detailing an extraordinary expedition undertaken by some of the most revered mountaineers of their era.(See illustration)

1966 Austin Mini Cooper S 1275- Delivered new to the supplying dealer, Central Garage of Leeds- Subject to a restoration program that took some 20 years that was completed in 2011- Original service book, owners' manual and displays a credible 69,450 milesThe Mini mania sparked by Paddy Hopkirk's glorious victory on the 1964 Monte Carlo Rally has never really gone away. What's changed in recent times is that serious collectors increasingly insist on their cars being to original or period modified specification and are prepared to pay for the privilege. This delightful Cooper S appears to tick that box nicely. It is a 1966 1275 model, that retains its original Hydrolastic suspension system, three-synchro gearbox, dynamo and positive earth electrical system. It was the subject of a restoration program that took some 20 years, and was completed in 2011. Items of note include: the Webasto sunroof that has been retrimmed by Pickerings of Bradford; reclining front seats courtesy of Newton Commercial; period leather-rimmed Les Leston steering wheel; optional twin fuel tanks; Minilite-style alloy wheels from Mini Spares; and rare 163 cylinder head which, in common with the gearbox, has been overhauled. Other items refurbished since 2011 include the front suspension bushes and joints. This home market Mini is finished in the strident combination of Black roof over Tartan Red bodywork and trimmed in Red/Gold brocade. It was delivered new to the supplying dealer, Central Garage of Leeds, on April 6, 1966 and first registered 'FUM 740D'. The vendor acquired the car in 2011, since when it has dwelt on the Isle of Man with the appropriate registration 'MN 1275' - as he is retaining that number the Mini has now been allocated 'FMN 740D'. The vendor presently grades the bodywork, paintwork and transmission as 'excellent', and the engine and interior trim as 'very good'. He is now offering the car complete with the green continuation log book and original service book and owners' manual, as well as the Tudor Webasto instruction guide and Manx registration document. The odometer currently displays an eminently credible 69,450 miles.
