The Ugly Prince, 1906, 64pp. manuscript, first and final leaves browned, some minor chipping and fraying to edges, manuscript title on front pastedown, with inscription beneath 'For Miss A.N. Bowers From the Author January 1906', original stiff oilcloth wrappers, upper cover with manuscript title label, slim 4to, together with Four Fairy Tales, 1st edition, Cheadle: J. Lowndes, 1911, occasional light spotting, foliate endpapers, manuscript inscription on front free endpaper 'Félicité Hardcastle With good wishes for her birthday, July 1; from the authoress. 1911', original blue cloth, spine slightly darkened and a little frayed at ends, upper cover gilt decorated (slightly dulled), 8vo 'The Ugly Prince' is the first of the 'Four Fairy Tales' in the published book, and the manuscript predates publication by five years. There are slight deviations between the written and printed versions. English astronomer Mary Adela Blagg was, in January 1916, one of the first women to be elected a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society. Her pioneering work on the standardisation of lunar nomenclature and the analysis of variable stars is widely known. Rather less well-known is her foray into the writing of children's books. 'Four Fairy Tales' appears to be her only fictional publication, and is itself rare, with the British Library copy the only listing on COPAC. Historian and naturalist Félicité Frances Hardcastle (1903-1988) was the daughter of Joseph Alfred Hardcastle (1868-1917) and great grand-daughter of illustrious astronomer Sir William Herschel. Her father, Joseph, was instrumental in setting Blagg on her astronomical path. She attended a local lecture series by him in Cheadle (where she lived all her life) and by 1906 he had arranged for the publication of her analysis of a year's worth of star observations, 4,000 in all. Hardcastle also helped guide Blagg to both of the fields already mentioned in which she did her best work. Mary Blagg's sister Alice married a William Eli Bowers. (2)

The Worshipful Company of Fan Makers: A Late 19th Century Cream Gauze Fan, mounted on simple wooden sticks painted in gold and with gold patterns on the gorge. The single leaf is painted in vibrant colours with the Arms of the Worshipful Company of Fan Makers, one of the Livery Companies of London, incorporated by Royal Charter in 1709. The Arms bear the motto ''Arts and Trades United''. The fan also has the Arms for the City of London with the motto ''Domino Dirige Nos'' meaning '' Lord, Guide us'' and a third shield, green, with 3 lions and the motto ''Semper Vigilans'' meaning ''always vigilant''. Two fans are incorporated into the overall design. Red and yellow ribbons are attached to the fan loop along with a label for a Ball held on the 28th June 1889, presented with the compliments of the Master and Mrs A G Hennell. Guard length 14 inches or 35.5cm The Fan Makers original coat of arms are recorded in Maitland's History of England of 1739 and a Company minute book of 1775 which both show very similar coats of arms for the Company. There appear to have been variations in design over the years. The Company's website explains that the tools show are actually tools used by a stick maker not a fan maker. See also lot ….The gauze is split to the right side, next to the guard to the central folds and elsewhere, making the fan difficult to fold.

GEORGE IV MAHOGANY BOOKCASE, AFTER A DESIGN BY GEORGE SMITHEARLY 19TH CENTURY the inverted breakfront top above an egg and dart frieze and a central drawer flanked by bow front drawers, over a single shelf, flanked by silk panelled cupboard doors enclosing single drawers, over a foliate moulded apron, raised on scrolling feet188cm wide, 95cm high, 54cm deepNote: George Smith (1786-1826) published three influential books on design in the first quarter of the 19th century. Smith's A Collection of Designs for Household Furniture and Interior Decoration, published in 1808, was itself influenced by the work of Thomas Hope. Smith's goal was to make Hope's designs accessible to the middle classes, so that 'the beauty and elegance displayed in the fittings-up of modern houses may not be confined to the stately mansion of our Nobility'. He adapted classical motifs borrowed from Egyptian, Greek and Roman sources, but was not averse to adopting Gothic and Chinese elements as well. He followed his first book with A Collection of Ornamental Designs, after the Manner of the Antique, in 1812, and was a regular contributor to Ackermann's Repository. His final publication in 1826, The Cabinet-Maker's and Upholsterer's Guide, included a design for a 'Drawing Room Commode', Plate VI, from which the present lot derives.Smith recommended the open-shelved commode for use in the drawing room, although they could be used in 'almost every apartment of a house… for such books are in constant use'. The height of the design was kept deliberately low to allow the wall above to be kept free for paintings or pier mirrors. Although Smith stated he had the patronage of George IV and promoted himself as 'Upholsterer and Drawing Master to His Majesty', no substantive evidence has been found to corroborate these claims. In the introduction to the Guide, Smith mentions his forty years of experience in the theory and practice of cabinet-making, but interestingly no firm evidence of a cabinet-making business carrying his name has come to light. Regardless, he is considered one of the key designers of the Regency period, yet despite his prolificacy, actual pieces that relate directly to his designs are rare.
