Tales from the Crypt: The Official Archives. Strictly limited Hardcover, limited to 200 copies. Hamilton Press / St Martins Press. 1996. By Digby Diehl. Tales From The Crypt: The Official Archives by Digby Diehl as published by St.Martin's Press and Hamilton Comics Ltd, 1996. This is one of the limited signed hardcover editions published by Bruce Hamilton's Hamilton Comics Ltd, with 2 signed bookplates inside the front cover. National Public Radio commentator Diehl recounts the history of Tales from the Crypt, which has scared horror fans through comics, television, and movies for more than half a century. Tales from the Crypt Official Archives limited edition hardcover centres on four special sections, each of which is worth the price of the whole book: there are biographies of 13 artists from the E. C. stable; glossy, full-color covers for all 105 E. C. horror comics; 4 beautifully reproduced, complete tales in their original form (on creamy white paper stock); and a never-before-seen "Picto-Fiction" story from E. C.'s heyday, illustrated by Jack Davis. All of this and more has been lovingly put together by literary correspondent and columnist, Digby Diehl. While St.Martin's Press published the hardcover trade editions and softcover editions, Bruce Hamilton had the rights to publish the limited edition versions. With the interior pages and contents being exactly the same, Hamilton Comics published four different; Pricier Editions, each one limited and with different coloured Leather-effect covers. Each of the four coloured editions had EC ghoulish-names attached to them:1. The brown cover version was called Rotting Corpse mottled brown2. The green cover version was called Swamp water Slime mottled green3. The red cover version was called Stripped Flesh mottled red4. This off white cover version was called Bleached BonesThis edition is the Pricier edition in the Bleach bones style, much rarer than the trade edition found on the secondary market. This Bleached Bones off-white edition is signed by seven of the original EC Comics artists and writers; Jack Davis, Joe Orlando, Johnny Craig, Al Feldstein, Al Williamson, Marie Severin, and George Evans. Most excitingly this edition features an individual signed bookplate by none other than the legendary Harvey Kurtzman, the sadly now deceased genius behind MAD Magazine and principal artist on many of the earliest EC horror stories. Also included is a signed glossy 8x10 photo of the Crypt Keeper character from the Tales of the Crypt television show. The interiors are printed in full colour on slick paper and feature 4 complete EC Horror stories, as well as numerous excerpts, reproductions of all original Tales from the Crypt, Vault of Horror, Haunt of Fear, and Shocksuspence covers, a history of the Gaines empire, and the rise and fall of horror comic books, and complete filmography of the Tales from the Crypt television series. Most excitingly this edition features a story from the EC archives illustrated by Jack Davis that had never been printed until this editions publication! This is a real find and a must read for any EC enthusiast.Other Features:- The official biography of the Crypt Keeper and the history of EC Horror Comics/- All 105 EC Horror Comic covers reproduced in full-colour.- A pictorial "filmography" of the award-winning HBO and Fox Television series featuring credits, synopses, and episode guide.- Four original (and complete) stories by Jack Davis, Al Feldstein, Graham Ingels, and Jack Kamen reprinted from the actual art and reproduced in colour in their original size.- Brief biographies and portfolios of the key EC artists.- Collectibles section highlighting the rarest and most valuable Crypt merchandise.Dont miss this chance to own one of the most amazing Tales from the Crypt publications ever produced.Excitingly this edition comes with a hand signed letter from the original distributor Janet Dvorak, apologising to the original owner for the copy originally getting lost in transit. After what must have been a lengthy journey back to its original point of origin, the book was then re-dispatched and thankfully made its way to its new home. To think that such a treasure was almost lost in the confines of global postal systems and may have never emerged is quite the thought. Excitingly, this treasure is now soon headed for a new home via Ewbank's auction House!Binding is perfectly bound and firm. No dents or knocks to hardcover. Pages are beautifully bound and still crisp from production. Cover shows slight markings of long-term storage and discolouration to front. Spine shows slight discoloration to gold gilt lettering. FREDERICK ARTHUR BRIDGMAN (AMERICAN, 1847-1928)Sanctuary in the Sahara signed and dated ‘F. A Bridgman 1879’ (lower left) oil on canvas 56 x 87cm Provenance The artist Arthur Croft (1828-1902); Thence by family descent to the current owner Exhibited London, Royal Academy, Annual, 1880, no. 232 Literature For a related work see; Frederick A. Bridgman, Winters in Algeria (New York: Harper and Brothers, 1890), drawing, Mosque of Lichana, repro. p. 248. The present work will be on view at Cromwell Place SW7 on 12th and 13th March 2024FootnoteSanctuary in the Sahara is a product of Fredrick A. Bridgman’ssecond visit to Algeria.  Having painted Algiers and its neighboringvillages in 1872-73 during his first trip to North Africa, during his 1879stay, he decided to investigate the smaller towns and villages south of themetropolis, which remained less westernized, despite French control of theregion. After Biskra, he made a three-day excursion towards the Sahara Desert, visiting several south-eastern villages, accompanied by a French militaryescort, native guide, interpreter, and other artists.Their initial adventure was to the oasis village of Lichana. Bridgman remarkedin his published account, Winters in Algeria (1890, p. 245)that it “presented a different aspect from anything we have seen.” The partyselected as their first sightseeing stop the local mosque, one of the oldest inAlgeria.  Bridgman was so taken by its sad beauty that he devoted a pageto describing its features.Heavy roundarches of whitewashed clay stood upon rude columns that looked as if they hadbeen fashioned by throwing the material together from a distance rather than byany careful trowelling. Several pillars of limestone, with rude capitals, probably Roman, were worn quite smooth from being constantly leaned against. ... More than half the mosque was not used, and the impalpable dust lay severalinches thick round the base of the columns farthest removed from the . . .pulpit. . .. On the white walls were various square patterns and scroll-work,painted in vivid colors to take the place of tiles.  The little windowswere of fascinating design, each one different, and here and there wereenlivened with bits of stained glass between the open-work—a remnant of betterdays that the mosque and village had seen before the French occupation. (pp.246-47)Throughouthis description of the mosque, shadowy covered passageways, and dwellings,Bridgman remarked on the dilapidated state of the village and surrounding highwalls, not as a criticism, but as a comment on the inhabitants’ poverty. So impressed was he by the mosque that he devoted a half-pageillustration, Mosque of Lichana, to it in his travel book. Thedrawing, which includes far less figures, has a similar setting and no doubtserved as the study for the painting, Sanctuary in the Sahara.   Bridgmanadded bits of color throughout the monochromatic shadowy interior, placing oneof the painted decorative lintels on the center column for emphasis. The painting was first exhibited in London at the 1880 annual exhibition of theRoyal Academy.  It was probably bought then or soon afterwards by theEnglish artist Arthur Croft (1828-1902) as it never again appeared in any ofBridgman’s many contributions to annuals, nor in his solo exhibitions. The twounidentified exhibition stickers on the canvas indicate the painting was latershown again, probably in regional displays. Croft was known primarily as awatercolorist of landscapes and topographical views; he married an Americanwoman and spent some time in New York, depicting New England scenery. Croft mayhave met Bridgman in 1880 or 1881 when Bridgman was back in his home country tohold a large solo display of his paintings.  However, it is more likelythat the two artists met in London as both were married to American expatriatesliving there. Croft may have even visited Algeria with Bridgman, as theAmerican was accompanied by four other artists, who remained unnamed in hiswritings. The few located Croft Algerian scenes are dated 1880 and 1881. Sanctuaryin the Sahara remained in Croft’s family for generations. We are grateful to Dr Ilene Fort for preparing this note and for her assistance with the cataloguing ofthis work. Condition ReportOriginal canvas.  There is a small one-inch tear to the central pillar; scattered surface staining to the left side of the work; areas of paint separation to the doorway, lower left, to the figures, lower centre and to the foreground.  Otherwise original condition and held in the original frame.Nothing fluorescing under UV light.

Rossetti'), 8 lines beginning 'The Rose is Love's own flower – And Love's no less/ The Lily's loftiness...', affixed to the flyleaf of a volume of thirteen manuscript poems dedicated to Christina Rossetti, composed, written and illustrated by her close friend Lisa Wilson, beginning 'To Christina, My Dearest Friend', and including the poems 'Consecrations', 'Of My Lady', 'Her Birthday', and 'For Love's Sake', finely decorated in watercolour throughout with flowers such as forget-me-nots, honeysuckle and blossoms, 13 leaves of watercolour paper, printed gilt floral endpapers, vellum, ruled in gilt with initials 'C.G.R.' on upper cover, 8vo (178 x 125mm.), [1892]; with a separate autograph fair copy of Rossetti's poem titled 'In honour of her Book, and still/ more of my own/ Fior-di-Lisa' signed with initials ('C.G.R.') on a bifolium, one page, 8vo (175 x 111mm.), [?1892]; and group of associated ephemera including a cabinet photograph of Lisa Wilson and two botanical watercolours signed 'Helen Rossetti' (small group)Footnotes:'TO MY FIOR-DI-LISA': A VOLUME OF ILLUSTRATED POEMS DEDICATED TO CHRISTINA ROSSETTI BY HER CLOSE FRIEND, WITH TWO COPIES OF ROSSETTI'S VERSE WRITTEN IN RESPONSE. This beautifully decorated vellum-bound volume was presented by Lisa Wilson to Christina Rossetti in 1892, soon after Rossetti's operation for breast cancer in May of that year, and bound in haste when it was thought that she had not long to live. The women had corresponded since the 1880's when Lisa Wilson '...a very invalidish girl, obliged to lie down a great deal...' (Mary F. Sanders, The Life of Christina Rossetti, London, 1930, p.254) wrote Rossetti an admiring letter. They finally met in 1885 when Christina offered to send her a copy of her new book Time Flies (see lot 118). Grasping the opportunity to meet in person, Lisa collected the book herself, thus beginning a close lifelong friendship, becoming her '...most important admirer... close friend and companion...' (Jan Marsh, Christina Rossetti, a Literary Biography, 1994, p.538). The moment is captured in her poem 'The Meeting' included here ('...let me recall the time when we first met... you came and let my hands clasp yours... Your lips, with their sweet melancholy curve and rare swift smile. Your musical low voice Thrilled through me...'). Rossetti herself was less poetic at the prospect of their meeting: 'Don't expect me to be as nice as my poems or you will be disappointed', she had written (Marsh, p.538).The collection of intense love poems, religious verses and thoughts on death has been described as '...the most public statement Wilson made of her love for Rossetti...' (Diane D'Amico, 'Lisa Wilson: 'A Friend of Christina Rossetti'', The Journal of Pre-Raphaelite Studies, Vol. 10, Fall 2001, p.118). D'Amico argues that the poems must, however, be read in the context of female friendship at a time when intense expressions of love between women were allowed without being interpreted as sapphic, and that they can also be seen in the concept of a spiritual friendship that brought them closer to God, with Rossetti as Lisa's spiritual guide: '...Wilson's love for Rossetti and her poetry inspired by this love are influenced by a religious faith that allowed for such a concept of friendship...' (D'Amico, p.121). After Rossetti's death, Lisa requested William Michael Rossetti return the volume, in which Christina had inscribed a short verse dedicated to her, and inserted at the front of the book. 'Fior-Di-Lisa' casts Lisa as a lily and herself as a rose, and the book is full of the symbolic language of flowers through which their friendship was communicated. The poem was published in New Poems by Christina Rossetti, edited by William Michael Rossetti in 1896.As well as requesting the return of our volume, she also burned all Christina's correspondence and, apart from publishing these poems, never commented about a friendship she considered sacred, thinking it was enough, and indeed a privilege, to be remembered merely as Rossetti's friend. All the poems inscribed here, apart from the preface 'To Christina' were included in Lisa Wilson's only published work, Verses, of 1896, in which she revealed her pseudonym Christina Grey, under which she may have published other work. Whilst their close relationship is acknowledged by biographers, and our volume consulted by them, further detail is scarce and she is depicted as a rather shadowy figure of whom little is known. Diane D'Amico has put this deficiency right in her comprehensive essay 'Lisa Wilson: 'A Friend of Christina Rossetti'', (ibid, pp.109-129), where she talks about Lisa and our volume in detail. D'Amico identifies her as Mary Louisa Wilson (1850-1934), the daughter of a solicitor from Oundle. She remained unmarried and lived with her widowed mother and brother as companion and housekeeper in Gilston Road, London. A devout Christian, she was a regular attendee at her local church, St Mary's The Boltons, and devoted much time to visiting the poor and sick. She moved to Cornwall after the death of her sisters and her good friend Maude Corkran, and spent the last years of her life in Penzance. The book was passed on to her god-daughter Christina Corkran, and has remained in the family since then.Provenance: Mary Louisa 'Lisa' Wilson (1850-1934, poet, artist and friend of Christina Rossetti); her god-daughter Christina Maude Evelyn Corkran (1903-1979); thence by descent. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: •• Zero rated for VAT, no VAT will be added to the Hammer Price or the Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

I enclose a copy of Mao Tse-Tung's "Protracted War" with his signature written on the side of the cover. I am sure that this signed book will be a rare acquisition on your part, and I can assure you that the seven guineas will be put to good use in promoting Anglo-Chinese friendship. Yours sincerely, Jack Woddis”. Notes:Mao Zedong / Tse-tung, also known as Chairman Mao, was the Communist revolutionary founder of the People’s Republic of China, which he led as chairman of the Chinese Communist Party from 1949 until his death in 1976. During the early part of the Chinese Civil War (begun in 1927), Mao was appointed commander-in-chief of the Red Army and developed guerrilla tactics influenced by the works of ancient military strategists such as Sun Tzu. After the Manchurian Incident of 1931 and full-blown Japanese invasion in 1937, Mao’s troops allied with their former enemies to form a united front against the Japanese. From his base in Yan'an, Mao authored several texts for his troops, including Philosophy of Revolution, which offered an introduction to the Marxist theory of knowledge; Protracted Warfare (this volume), which dealt with guerrilla and mobile military tactics; and On New Democracy, which laid forward ideas for China's future.Jack Woddis (1914-1980) was the British-born son of Polish Jewish emigree who had fled the pogroms of the Imperial Russian Empire. He joined the Communist Party Hendon branch in 1937 and went on to write extensively about neo-colonialism and internationalism. He worked as secretary of the Communist Party’s International Department for many years as well as being a member of the executive and various political committees. The volume was purchased by the vendor’s grandfather, who is described by them as having had very “left-wing sympathies”. It has stayed in the family since the original purchase in 1950, and was only re-discovered amongst other papers recently after the vendor’s father passed away.Refer to department for guide price

Bailliere, 219 Regent Street. 1823-1840.Half leather, marbled-paper-covered boards, some rubbing, The leatheron the spines largely dried out and the labels faded. A pencil note tothe front '16 guineas for the 16 volumes in 8' and a tipped-inhandwritten note in the hand of George West states 'This perfectlyclean copy of the British Entomology by John Curtis contains thewhole of the plates in 8 vols arranged numerically, although the titlepages are for the systemic arrangement. All the plates are of theoriginal and best colouring and are vastly superior to the later issues, the text being the same throughout.'The title pages would appear to have been specially printed for thebound-up sets once the issues were complete.A further note reads 'The last plate...is numbered 769 but the 205* aswell as 205 completes the total of 770 plates.'(Plate 205 is, indeed numbered twice and the total plate count is 770as issued. There is a duplicate plate 497 placed instead of plate no.697)Yet another pencil note records Curtis' address in 1825 as Lime Grove. The book has been extensively annotated in pencil throughout by Westciting other authorities and references.WithA Guide to an Arrangement of British Insects Being A Catalogue of allthe Named Species hitherto discovered in Great Britain and Ireland,by John Curtis F.L.S second edition, greatly enlarged. Printed for theauthor published and sold by J. Pigot and Co., 59 Fleet Street;Sherwood and Co., Paternoster Row; Simpkin and Marshall,Stationers' Court. 1837. Octavo. 294 pp 1 page advertisements forCurtis' British Entomology. Marbled paper covered cartonnage withcloth spine decorated in blind. Handwritten paper label to front boardand spine. The spine shows areas of wear with loss to the foot but isstill substantially in place. The book has been annotated in pencil byWest and a handwritten note to the front indicates where an insect isillustrated in Curtis' 'British Entomology'. Curtis' book was co-authored by James Charles Dale, Francis Walker and AlexanderHenry Haliday, whose contributions Curtis notes in the Preface. Thebook was intended by Curtis to act as an index to his 'BritishEntomology',.(9)The following lots of books represent the library of George West.West's biographical details are hard to pin down, his date of birthunknown, (probably around the 1880's) and his death sometime after1945. He is known to have worked as an assistant and then lecturer inBotany at the University of Dundee from 1906. At that time theuniversity was a constituent college of St Andrews University. Westseems to have remained there until around 1926. In his publication'Practical Principles of Plain Photo Micrography' (1916) he describeshimself as a lecturer in Botany. Most of the books in the sale bear thehandstamp, 'George West' to the front pastedowns. Many volumes bearextracts from booksellers' catalogues with prices of the titles, suggesting that West liked to keep up with the current values of hislibrary. The books represent a working library and many are alsoannotated in pencil in his hand, cross-referencing other works andadding his comments. To the front of the first volume of Walker'sDiptera (see lot no.) he has inserted his handwritten poem, 'To theFuture Owners of this book'.Geordie has now turned up his toesAnd gone aloft to seek reposeFrom various varmints nips and stings,Especially those base mankind brings...........He trusts the child who gets this bookWill on the various notes just lookAnd feel that every pencil strokeHelps on the game dear Walker wrote...Although a botanist by profession, his main interest, judging byhis library appears to have been entomology and amongst the booksare some rare titles in that field many dating from the nineteenthcentury, a golden age for the natural sciences. Many of the giants inthe field of Entomology are represented in the books and there aregood sets of Curtis, Donovan and Stephens with many exquisite, hand-coloured illustrations. Geology was another of his interests, as well asmicroscopy. What little is known of George West is largely gleaned from apublication from Hereford Museum published in 2007. West haddonated a large collection of mineralogical specimens to the Museumin 1945. His connection with Hereford, however, appears to betenuous and the man remains something of an enigma.
