ALBUM – CONSTANCE MARSDENAutograph album of photographer Constance B. J. Marsden of Redcliffe Gardens, South Kensington, containing some 35 signatures and quotations including Christabel Pankhurst ('Aspirations are proportional to destinies'), Emmeline Pankhurst ('Votes for Women'), Emily Wilding Davison ('Deeds, not Words... March 30th 1909 1 month. Holloway./ July 30th 1909 2 months Holloway (Hunger-Strike)/ Sept. 4th 1909 2 months Strangeways... Oct 20th 1909 1 month (hard) Strangeways (2 Hunger-Strike & Hosepipe)'), Flora Drummond ('...I am writing in honour of one of the best 'Votes for Women' paper sellers...'), Constance Lytton and her alias Jane Warton, Charlotte Despard, Annie Ainsworth, Frederick William Pethick Lawrence, Marion Wallace-Dunlop, Ethel Smyth (musical quotation 'We have waited so long, we will wait now no more' dated June 1913), Catherine Emily Perie ('nurse to Mrs Pankhurst'), Mildred J. Marsden, Emmeline Pethick Lawrence, Laura Ainsworth ('Ride on to Victory'), green calf, worn, 4to (165 x 198mm.), 1908 to 1913Footnotes:'ONE OF THE BEST 'VOTES FOR WOMEN' PAPER SELLERS': The album of a WSPU photographer and activist.Constance Marsden's album reads like a 'Who's Who' of the suffrage movement. She was a member of the WSPU and photographed Emmeline Pankhurst in August/September 1913. The portrait was subsequently accepted by the Royal Photographic Society of Great Britain for an exhibition at the Royal Society of British Artists in Suffolk Street (Crawford, Elizabeth, The Women's Suffrage Movement: A Reference Guide 1866-1928, 1999, p.548). The entry in the album from Flora Drummond dated July 1910 makes reference to her considerable paper-selling skills on behalf of the cause. In the summer of 1910, she came third in a sales competition run by the WPSU for individually selling 1,448 copies of Votes for Women in a three month period, behind Miss McKenzie of Scarborough (1,797) and Mrs Axed of North Kensington (1,652) (pigott-gorrie.blogspot.com). One of nine siblings, her sister Sybil (a dressmaker trading under the name Madame Mantalini) is known to have shown her suffragist affiliations by making an anti-government statement on her census form of 1911. Her father, Algernon Moses Marsden, was a fine art dealer whose artists included James Tissot, who painted him in 1877, but, by the turn of the century, had been declared bankrupt several times (womanandhersphere.com suffrage-stories blog). As well as containing the signatures of Emmeline and Christabel Pankhurst, other contributors to this album include the suffragette martyr, Emily Wilding Davison, and illustrator Marion Wallace-Dunlop, who is credited with being the first to initiate the hunger strike as a means of retaliation. According to Votes for Women, Ethel Smyth's March of the Women with words by Cicely Hamilton was 'at once a hymn and a call to battle'. Also represented is Lady Constance Bulwer-Lytton (known as Constance Lytton), the author of Prisons and Prisoners who signs her alias 'Jane Warton' beneath her own name. Not wishing for preferential treatment due to her social status, she disguised herself, cut her hair and used an alias, taking on the character of 'an ugly London seamstress'. Subsequently, when arrested she suffered the same harsh treatment accorded to other prisoners and was repeatedly force fed, leading to a heart attack and several strokes (her book, a copy of which is offered in the present sale, was written with her left hand). Her extremism went as far as carving 'V' for Votes for Women on her chest whilst in prison using a needle and broken hatpin.Provenance: The Rev. Frederick Hankinson (1875-1960); Reginald Andrew Couzens (b.1904); thence by descent to the present owner.Suffragettes: The Hankinson-Goode Collection (lots 52-110) This remarkable collection of suffragette ephemera was assembled by the current owners' late parents, Myrna and Philip Goode, who inherited and then built on the collection bequeathed to them by the Rev. Frederick Hankinson (see lot 72). As the owners recall: 'Our Great Grandmother took her adopted son, my grandfather, to one of the Rev. Hankinson's churches and that this is how they met. My grandfather, Reginald Andrew Couzens, was born in 1904 and 'Hank' reputedly looked upon him as a surrogate son. My grandfather stayed close to Hank all his life. He did his accounts, cut his hair and various other things, right up until Hank died. My grandmother used to boast about the time that, through Hank, Lord and Lady Pethick Lawrence came to tea. With both our grandparents coming from very ordinary and relatively poor families, it was a huge honour to have gentry in their home. 'When Hank died in 1960, it was discovered that he had left his entire estate to our grandfather. They found Hank's papers and the autograph albums and were fascinated by them. At the time, they were worth very little, and there was little interest in the Suffrage movement, but our parents thought they were important historically. Now, we are amazed at their foresight. The whole lot could easily have ended up being thrown away. The documents were packed into boxes and stored in our grandparents' loft, unsorted, until our grandfather died. My grandmother then gave them to our parents, who began to go through and research them. 'Our parents became more and more interested in the subject and started collecting bits and pieces they came across, which in the 60s and 70s were still cheap to buy. We would go to any postcard fair we came across locally and on holiday, and search through for Suffragette postcards. It was on one of these jaunts in Norfolk that the window-smashers set was discovered. It seems hard to believe, but at that time a lot of the sellers didn't really know who or what Suffragettes were. 'As time went on and material became much better-known and sought-after, our parents decided to invest in some lots that would enhance the collection. They bought the Emily Wilding Davison and Duval collections at auction, the Suffragette newspapers and so on. They wanted their collection to be useful as well as giving them pleasure, and so they put on several exhibitions using their material, and shared documents with researchers, students and museums, including the Museum of London. They gave talks in schools and for societies in the area as well. Although the time has come to place the care of the collection in other hands, Hankinson remains an important part of our family's history and his legacy has had a huge and positive impact on all of us'.This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: •• Zero rated for VAT, no VAT will be added to the Hammer Price or the Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

The Mercedes-Benz S-Class is a luxury saloon and was officially introduced in 1972 with the W116 S-Class which succeeded previous Mercedes-Benz models dating back to the mid 1950s. As the flagship of the Mercedes-Benz line-up, the S-Class has debuted many of the company's latest innovations, including drivetrain technologies, interior features, and safety systems such as seatbelt pretensioners. The W220 S-Class was completely restyled in 1999 with a body that was slightly smaller and lighter than its predecessor. As with each new S-Class, the W220 brought in new innovations such as Airmatic air suspension and Active Ventilated Seats which used miniature fans in the seats to move air through perforations. S-Class safety features included innovations in active safety (accident avoidance) including ABS braking in 1978, traction control and Electronic Stability Program (ESP). Passive safety features included crumple zones in 1957, three-point seatbelts in 1965, collapsible steering column and strengthened occupant cell, resulting in better protection during heavy impacts.Presented in Piano Black with full grey leather this remarkably low mileage S320 showing just 45,889 miles has had just three owners from new and in that time been serviced by Mercedes-Benz main dealers only, the last in March 2021 at 42,142 miles. Unfortunately, the bodywork needs a little TLC but upon inspection at the time of consignment all electrics functioned as they should on the car including the air suspension and the interior was as expected in very good condition. A vehicle that when first registered with options such as parktronic, memory pack and xenon lights cost £50,221 and is now offered without reserve having been treated to new spark plugs and a new battery and boasting two sets of keys and the full book pack. Guide Price £3,000 - £5,000

One of just 100 official, UK-supplied, R33 examples sold by Middlehurst Garage. The 42nd official, UK-supplied, R33 GT-R sold (#107). First registered 7/05/1998Supplied new by GT-R specialists Middlehurst Garage in Midnight Purple,Two owners from new, present for 16 years mainly in an air-conditioned garageIn its current state of tune, the forged internals engine has been dyno’d on a rolling road with 486bhp at the wheels (approx 600bhp at the flywheel) at a modest 1.4 bar of boostAccompanied by the original service book, owners manuals and maintenance recordsSpec highlights include 1000cc Injectors, Tomei Fuel Rail, single T78 Turbo, Trust extra capacity oil sump, AEM Series 2 ECU, triple plate clutch, 19” Nismo carbon dipped alloy wheels, D2 fully adjustable suspension, D2 upgraded brake kitThe registration 'N5 GTR' will stay with the carPerhaps underrated, but quietly influential compared to its forbears, the R33 incarnation of the GT-R is still a pure sports car experience, but now aided by some of the most revolutionary handling technology to influence modern performance driving. The new R33 Skyline GT-R was launched in January 1995 with a base GT-R and the V Spec model which offered a sportier suspension set-up resulting in lower ground clearance, and also featured the newer ATTESA E-TS Pro all-wheel drive system, which included an Active Limited-Slip Differential. At the heart of the V-spec was the ATTESA-ETS Pro Electronic Torque Split System which, at the time, made it arguably the most technologically advanced production car in the world. The system was conceived in the 1990s for the JTCC to enable some 600bhp to be fed through the wheels and on to the racetrack efficiently. ETS Pro satisfied the purists by offering all the advantages of rear-wheel drive until the conditions dictated otherwise. The V Spec also featured an active LSD on the rear axle which further aided traction by calculating the optimum torque-split between the left and right rear wheels, variable from fully locked to totally free.Working along with ATTESA-ETS PRO, is the SUPER HICAS rear-wheel steering. This uses a series of sensors to monitor vehicle motion, rate of turn and the driver's action on the steering wheel. Complex software then compares this information to the computer predictions of the car's ideal turning characteristics, adjusting the angle of the rear wheels to reflect the driver's intentions. The result of this type of technology? Neutral steering and unrivalled cornering capabilities. The engine in the R33 was nearly identical to the previous R32 using the same turbochargers and the same specification for the manual gearbox, although the synchros were made to be stronger. The increased body rigidity and improved handling potential necessitated several specially designed cross members being incorporated into the monocoque and extra torsion bars were added to the multi-link suspension to further enhance stability. Working closely with Bridgestone technicians to perfect the Potenza tyres, Nissan put the prototype R33 GT-R through its paces in all weathers at the notorious Nürburgring, earning them a daring reputation amongst other manufacturers.Tested in the wind tunnel and capable of around 175 mph, the Skyline GT-R's adjustable rear spoiler lets you find the best compromise between wind resistance and grip. To equalise front/rear weight distribution, the bonnet and front wings were made of aluminium instead of steel and the battery was fitted at the base of the car's boot, lowering the centre of gravity and further improving handling.Inside the Skyline GT-R, form followed function. Mono-form bucket seats with integrated headrests that are lightweight yet immensely tough provided the ideal driving position and supported the body against the G-forces endured under hard acceleration and cornering. The braking system was designed by Italy's famous Brembo Spa, suppliers to many of the world's Formula 1 teams at this time. Four-piston calipers were fitted on the front with two-piston calipers on the rear to bite into the discs with a diamond shaped ventilation bores which increased the surface area to aid heat dissipation. The GT-R's braking system utilises the same wheel rotation sensors used to control the ATTESA-ETS PRO, to activate the high-performance ABS, ensuring that the huge Brembo calipers always deliver optimum performance. The car presented here is the 42nd official, UK-supplied, R33 GT-R sold (#107) and was first registered on the 7th May 1998. Supplied new by renowned GT-R specialists ‘Middlehurst Garage’ (in arguably the best ‘Godzilla’ colour of Midnight Purple) to its first owner, a Mr Craven, who bought it as a company car. He was quite obviously a genuine Japanese sports-car enthusiast, with an understanding of the associated culture, especially 20 or so years ago. To release the latent performance potential from this sort of machine, Mr Craven commissioned specialists ‘Abbey Motorsport’ of Surrey to carry out an engine conversion from 2.6-litre to 2.8-litre (not dissimilar to the specification of the ‘mythical’ UK trio of ‘500R’ R33s). Knowing the expertise of Abbey Motorsport and that this is a well-known route to performance amongst GT-R owners, our vendor subsequently leapt at the opportunity to buy the car and thus become the car’s 2nd owner, cherishing it for the last 16 years. Unsurprisingly, it is accompanied by the original service book, owners’ manuals, and maintenance records. As a member of the GT-R Club and very much part of the owners’ community, our vendor is well-placed to understand and evaluate these special cars. His car is not only special due to its UK-supplied status and its amazing paint colour of Midnight Purple, but there have also been some choice enhancements added to it, something these cars thrive on and is regarded as the ‘done thing’. Hence, through his owners’ club connections, he sourced from another member a very sound RB26 2.6-litre engine, professionally installing it and setting about a raft of upgrades. In its current state of tune, the forged internals of this RB26 engine have been dyno’d on a rolling road with 486bhp at the wheels, at a modest 1.4 bar of boost which equates to about 600bhp at the flywheel. The engine can run at 2 bar, which would generate around 800bhp but would inevitably put additional strain on the components. Further spec details include 1000cc Injectors, Tomei Fuel Rail, single T78 Turbo, Trust extra capacity oil sump, AEM Series 2 ECU, competition triple plate clutch, 19” Nismo carbon dipped alloy wheels, D2 fully adjustable suspension, and D2 upgraded brake kit.Potential bidders should not be deterred by the engine installation or modifications, there are very few standard-specification matching-numbers R33 examples out there and would certainly demand a £100,000-plus guide price. Knowledgeable ownership, the quality of the work carried out and maintenance are key to these cars. Reassuringly solid on the underside (with most metal here having been preventatively powder-coated over the years) and inner wings, the known vulnerable area of a GT-R, the car has benefitted from such diligent improvements and ownership, plus regular servicing, and considerate storage - being garaged for the last 16 years in an air-conditioned facility.

Edouard Weiss, Paris.Signed and justified by hand.Size: 54 x 43 cm."Guided by a scent", the final sentence in the book "Aromas" by Chillida, sums up the artist's spirit when working, allowing himself to be guided by the materials, by their essence. As the sculptor himself explained it: "The form, at the beginning, is almost like an undefined aroma that imposes itself as it becomes more precise. This pre-knowledge or aroma is my guide to the unknown, to the desired and the necessary". This is a silkscreen belonging to the book by Eduardo Chillida made up of five etchings, three woodcuts, two relief silkscreen prints, together with 38 pages of text that, through graphic work, poems, reflections and philosophical quotations, both by the artist himself and by various thinkers, brings us closer to the Basque artist's thought and work through the keys that have marked his career: time, space, music, freedom, matter, light and the sea. Published on the occasion of the artist's 76th birthday. In "Aromas" Chillida the plastic artist and Chillida the writer join hands to reveal the poet, the philosopher and the profound thinker. The edition consists of 160 graphic series with the numbering; 1-120; I-IX (suite); I-IX (suite in grey Eskulan); H. C. 1-10; E. A. 1-12.Chillida began drawing at the Círculo de Bellas Artes in Madrid, and his interest in sculpture gradually grew. It was during his years in Paris that he made his first plaster sculptures, impressed by the archaic Greek sculpture in the Louvre. He held his first sculpture exhibition in the French capital in 1950. In 1951 he returned to San Sebastián for good, and produced his first work in iron, the material he would work with for the rest of his life. Throughout his life, Chillida received numerous prizes and awards, including the Carnegie Prize, the Rembrandt Prize, the Wolf Foundation Prize for the Arts and the Prince of Asturias Prize for the Arts. He was also an academician of San Fernando, and a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, Honorary of the Royal Academy of Arts in London and of the Imperial Order of Japan, and was awarded the Grand Cross for Humanitarian Merit by the Institution of the same name in Barcelona. In addition to his Chillida-Leku Museum in Hernani, he is represented in museums and collections all over the world, such as the Guggenheim in Bilbao, the MOMA in New York, the Reina Sofía in Madrid, the Tate Gallery in London and the Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin.
