Divide – The Relationship Crisis Between Town & Country: Signed by the Author Anna Jones Donated by: Anna Jones - Journalist, Author, Blogger, Producer, Broadcaster & Country Trust Auction Champion Longlisted for The 2022 Wainwright Prize for writing on: CONSERVATION, Divide is a call to action. It warns that unless we learn to accept and respect our social, cultural and political differences as town and country people, we are never going to solve the chronic problems in our food system and environment. As we stare down the barrel of climate change, only farmers - who manage two thirds of the UK's landscape, working together with conservation groups, can create a healthier food system and bring back nature in diverse abundance. But this fledgling progress is hindered and hamstrung by simplistic debates that still stoke conflict between conservative rural communities and the liberal green movement. Each chapter, from Family and Politics, to Animal Welfare and the Environment, explores a different aspect of the urban/rural disconnect, weaving case studies and research with Anna's personal stories of growing up on a small, upland farm. There is a simple theme and a strong message running throughout the book - a plea to respect our differences, recognise each other's strengths and work together to heal the land. Longlisted for The 2022 Wainwright Prize for writing on: CONSERVATION A brilliant call to action for town and country to work together like never before – Adam Henson Divide is well written and thought-provoking - Sunday Telegraph A lively guide through the thorny challenges of rural life in an urban world. Essential reading for both incomer and local. Anna Jones is insightful but above all sensitive: we walk in everybody's shoes - Tom Heap We are hosting this auction on behalf of The Country Trust - please contact Victoria Cable if you require further information about the individual lots.

Jeopardy – The Danger of Playing it Safe on the Path to Success: Signed and dedicated in the name of the final bidder’s choice by the author Wilfred Emmanuel-Jones MBE Donated by: Wilfred Emmanuel-Jones MBE – Country Trust Auction Champion An inspirational personal development and business guide from the award-winning entrepreneur and Founder of The Black Farmer Wilfred Emmanuel-Jones was born in Jamaica and moved to the UK with his parents, as part of the Windrush Generation, growing up in inner-city Birmingham. Growing up dyslexic in a family of 11, he found solace in growing fruit and vegetables on his father’s allotment, sparking his dream to have a farm of his own. After starting his career in the catering industry, he enrolled on a training scheme that led him to work in TV as a producer and director for BBC’s Food & Drink. Wilfred went on to run his own marketing agency which enabled him to fulfil his dream of buying a farm on the Devon & Cornwall borders, from which he launched his award-winning, multi-million-pound Black Farmer brand. My mission is to break down barriers and create opportunities for people to fulfil their potential, regardless of ethnicity or background. By bringing the rural farm shop experience to urban areas, I aim to bridge a divide and create a community space where everyone can meet, enjoy, and be inspired – Wilfred Emmanuel-Jones This insightful book inspires readers to be positive about overcoming adversity and failure to pursue ambitions and the path to success. The book is signed by Wilfred Emmanuel-Jones and will be dedicated in the name of the final bidder’s choice. https://theblackfarmer.com/ We are hosting this auction on behalf of The Country Trust - please contact Victoria Cable if you require further information about the individual lots.

Lot 222

A late production example, this XK has been beautifully restored by Jaguar specialists, CMC. A car-starved Britain, still trundling around in perpendicular pre-war hangover vehicles, glimpsed the future in October 1948 with the launch of the Jaguar XK120 at the Earls Court Motor Show. Production commenced in 1949 in Coventry, and the XK's swoopy shape and stylish occupants would become a common sight on British roads over the next 15 years. It heralded the arrival of Jaguar's famous 3.4-litre twin overhead camshaft XK engine, (the basis of all their engines for the next 25 years) with an alloy cylinder head and twin side-draught SU carburettors producing nearly 160bhp. The '120' referred to the car's top speed which, at the time, made it the fastest production car in the world. Jaguar seems to have always had a flair for marketing and to illustrate that the car's top speed was not a figment of a publicist's imagination, in May 1949, on the Jabbeke to Aeltre autoroute, an XK120 with its hood and side screens in place recorded a speed of 126mph, and no less than 132mph with the hood and windscreen detached and an undertray fitted. The car was in almost instant demand and went on to spawn the famous XK lineage of fast and elegant sports cars. This particular XK120 Coupé was originally built in left-hand drive during December 1953 and dispatched to New York prior to being registered there early in 1954. Returning to these shores in the late 1990s, it was converted to right-hand drive and fully restored. Invoices and photographs in the comprehensive history file and records on XK Data show that the work was carried out by Roger Austin Learmonth and subsequently featured in his book Petrolhead. Upgrades at the time included the fitting of a 4.2-litre XK power unit and period bucket seats to enhance legroom. Now finished in beautiful Opalescent Blue with a red leather upholstery, the car was further updated with a louvered bonnet with straps and wire wheels, all designed to make it ideal for European touring. It was re-registered in the UK during July 2003 and used extensively until being sold to our late vendor (a characterful bon viveur and friend of Iconic Auctioneers owner, Nick Whale) in 2016. It was bought for some £115,000 at the time as probably the very best example of an upgraded model available. However, our late vendor was particularly fastidious and wanted the very best car available to enjoy and with which to tour Europe. Consequently the services of renowned specialists, CMC of Bridgnorth, were employed and between March 2017 and December 2019 the history file illustrates that some £88,824 plus VAT was invested in rebuilding this car for a second time and the results are really impressive. Naturally, this work was recorded and fully detailed in a selection of invoices which need to be studied in order to understand the sheer level of detail applied to every aspect of this rebuild to, what can only be described as, the ultimate standard. Shortly after all this work was completed, our vendor got to enjoy his 'pride and joy' on a trip to Le Mans during which the Jaguar performed faultlessly, however, a little later, he sadly fell ill and was not able to spend much more time in his beloved XK. So today, this is a remarkable opportunity for someone to own a very special motor car that has had all the money spent in the right areas, and with the best people, and take WAS 210 on to the next stage of its journey. We invite and encourage your close inspection of this stunning motor car and its fascinating history file in order to fully appreciate the quality on offer and be pleasantly surprised by the very realistic guide price.Specification Make: JAGUAR Model: XK120 Year: 1953 Chassis Number: 681302 Registration Number: WAS 210 Transmission: Manual Engine Number: F1430-8 Drive Side: Right-hand Drive Odometer Reading: 4673 Miles Make: RHD Interior Colour: Red LeatherClick here for more details and images

It was registered in March 2004 and has two registered keepers recorded on its V5C. Its odometer shows 59,530 miles (warranted by the service and MoT history) and its MoT is valid until the end of September 2025. The car is reported to be running and driving with no issues. Paperwork includes the V5C, current MoT certificate and one from 2022, and an invoice for a full service and cambelt in December 2020 at 59,527 miles. There's also the book pack with owner's handbook, audio instructions, dealer directory, quick reference guide, and service book. This has stamps up to 59,527 miles in December 2020.

Lot 632

Make & Model:Bentley, Arnage Date of Reg:419BCH Colour:Silver cc:4398 MoT:2025-07-18 Fuel Type:Petrol Mileage:72854 Transmission:automatic Summary:This 1999 Bentley Arnage is the 4.4-litre BMW V8-engined variant; what would later come to be known as the Green Label. Registered in July 1999, the odometer shows 72,854 miles - which can be verified from the accompanying paperwork - and the MoT is valid until July 2025. The car  is described as running and driving (and was driven 95 miles to the auction from Brentwood in Essex) with items like the air-conditioning, electric windows and seats working as they should. We did notice the ‘Check Engine’ light on during our test drive however. The Arnage comes with its V5C, MoT certificates, a few invoices, and service books with entries up to 67,137 miles in July 2020. There's also the original book packs with owner's handbook and supplement, service handbook, accessories guide, warranty booklets, dealer network directory and assistance service book. In addition, there's instructions for the Alpine navigation system and radio/CD player.

Make & Model:Smart , Roadster Date of Reg:BF54ZFJ Colour:Black cc:698 MoT:2025-09-13 Fuel Type:Petrol Mileage:15980 Transmission:automatic Summary:This 698cc Smart Roadster is showing a mere 15,980 miles, which can be verified by the MoT and service history. The car was registered in September 2004 and has had four registered keepers since then. It has an MoT valid until September 2025. The car features air conditioning, electric windows, an electric canvass roof and central locking; only the air conditioning isn't functioning as it should due to a fractured refrigerant pipe. The car runs and drives, with working brakes, and the vendor tells us it has been in regular (albeit limited) weekly use. Paperwork includes the V5C, assorted invoices, all MoTs back  to 2007, old tax discs, and the book pack. This includes the owner's manual, quick guide, dealership directory and radio instructions. There's also the service book, with stamps from 1167 miles in May 2005 through to 13,671 miles in 2017.

Lot 585

Make & Model:ISUZU, TROOPER SWB Date of Reg:OXI317 Colour:GREEN cc:2559cc MoT:2025-10-06 Fuel Type:Petrol Mileage:61541 Transmission:AUTO Summary:This 1992 Isuzu Trooper was initially registered in Guernsey before coming to the mainland and being registered here in March 1993. The odometer shows 61,562 miles and the MoT is valid until October 2025. Five registered keepers are recorded, with one having it from 1995 to 2016; however the V5C shows two owners during this period as she became a titled lady in 2001. It was apparently used once a week to travel into Downham Market from Crimplesham and then used for trips to Oxford University before being parked up until 2016. The vendor purchased it that year and changed the cambelt and exhaust, and gave it four new tyres. The wheels were shotblasted and painted, underbody coating applied, the bonnet and sides machine-polished and the roof repainted. However, it then went back into storage and wasn't MoT'd until 2024, so has only been driven 20 to 30 miles since. The Trooper was Waxoyled early on in its life, including inside the chassis rails, bulkhead, door pillars and doors.    The Isuzu runs and drives, with the only known fault being the driver's electric door window not working properly - it is believed that the motor is jammed. The radio is also inoperative. History with the Isuzu includes the V5C, old V5, and MoTs between 1995 and 2002 plus the 2024 MoT certificate. There's also the book pack with owner's handbook, alarm guide, radio instructions and service booklet. There's also the service book with entries up to ‘2017/18’ noting work done then. The last stamp is in September 2000 at 53,965 miles; the vendor understands that it was serviced when MoT'd through to 2002.

Lot 588

Lot 613

Make & Model:Ford, Focus RS Date of Reg:KJ53EPN Colour:Blue cc:1988 Fuel Type:Petrol Mileage:5628 Transmission:manual Summary:This excellent condition 2003 Ford Focus, registered in September of that year, has only covered a mere 5630 miles from new (confirmed by the history that accompanies it). During that time, it has had just one owner who has always kept it serviced and garaged and used it purely for enjoyment during decent weather as a second car - it has never even carried passengers. A move to Yorkshire in 2017 meant the RS had to go into secure dry storage, from which it has only just emerged, even coming to ACA on a covered trailer so that the damp autumn weather wouldn't get at it. The vendor describes it as a very reluctant sale. The car has been given a new battery (plus a new battery in its key fob) and as it hasn't been used since 2017, taken to Marshalls Ford, the Ford Main Agent in Kings Lynn for a oil and filter change. At the same time a new MoT was issued. Paperwork with the Focus includes the V5C, invoices covering the car's life and all MoT certificates. There's also a copy of Car magazine from October 2002 featuring the RS, brochures, and the original book pack. This includes the owner's handbook and supplement, audio guide, warranty and service guide, and the service book. The latter has five main dealer stamps from September 2004 at 1414 miles through to 5629 miles in October this year. There's also a declaration of provenance from CarSafe storage testifying that Focus was kept in a secure, dehumidified warehouse from September 2017 until September 2024.

Lot 220

Make & Model:Mitsubishi , Shogun Pinin Date of Reg:HF52YDB Colour:Blue cc:1834 MoT:2025-07-31 Fuel Type:Petrol Mileage:12970 Transmission:manual Summary:Registered in September 2002 with just one (older) lady owner from new and a very low 12,966 miles showing on its odometer. The cambelt was replaced in April 2023 at 12,955 miles and the car has been kept in a garage throughout its life. Its MoT is valid to July 2025. The Mitsubishi has been out of use for some five years after its owner gave up driving. However, the servicing over the years has been done by one of the family, who is a mechanic. The car is described as running and driving with no issues, but just not had much use over the last decade.  Paperwork with the Mitsubishi includes the V5C, a couple of recent invoices (including the one for the cambelt) and the book pack. This includes the owner's manual, CD autochanger instructions, and Cobra alarm guide. There's also the service book showing two stamps up to 7222 miles in February 2018.  There's also some spare keys as well.

This includes the owner's handbook, audio instructions, quick start guide, radio code and service booklet. This has stamps up to 30,800 miles in May 2010.

Lot 595

Make & Model:Fiat , X1/9 VS Date of Reg:C195VLR Colour:Blue cc:1498 MoT:2025-07-15 Fuel Type:Petrol Mileage:24500 Transmission:manual Summary:Purchased new by noted classic car enthusiast Robert Furniss Riding, this Bertone version of Fiat's mid-engined X1-9 remained in his million pound-plus car collection until his death in 2022. The car was registered in March 1986 and is now showing just 24,580 miles on its odometer. It has an MoT through to July 2025 and its V5C now records four registered keepers. Recent work has included an oil service and cambelt with tensioner, plus some paint repairs, gearbox work and other minor repairs. As a result, it presents very well inside and out, with its leather interior in especially good order. The car features a period Blaupunkt Montreal SQR 24 radio/cassette player, two fitted luggage bags and a car cover. Paperwork includes the current and past V5Cs, old tax discs, invoices and MoTs back to 1989 that help confirm its mileage. Also in the file is the Blaupunkt radio guide, European dealer guide, various club magazines, magazine and newspaper features, technical information, Haynes workshop manual, Brooklands road test book and original brochures.

Lot 572

Make & Model:Ford, Sierra RS COSWORTH Date of Reg:D737PJW Colour:White cc:1993 Fuel Type:Petrol Mileage:13231 Transmission:manual Summary:This 1987 Ford Sierra Cosworth has been owned by our vendor since it was less than a year old. Supplied new by Bristol Street Motors and then by TC Harrison. First registered on the 28th of January 1987 and understood to have initially been used as a dealership demonstrator before being passed to its second recorded keeper just two months later. The Speedo head failed early on in its life and was replaced by TC Harrison at 12,204 miles in March 1988. In November 1988 it appears the replacement speedo head required replacement again at an indicated 2,729 miles. Thereafter, the Cosworth has only received limited use, backed up by MoT certificates dating back to 1990 at 2,735 miles and through to 2017 at 12,980 miles. The total mileage that the Cosworth has covered is believed to be less than 30,000 with the current reading at 13,231. More recently the Cosworth suffered from a small engine bay fire whilst being started after a period of inactivity, so will need some repair work to return it to the road. No insurance claim has been made and the car remains clear on Hpi . The vendor has confirmed to us that it has received little use over the last twenty five years and is in original condition.Paperwork with the Cosworth includes the V5C, MoT certificates back to 1990 that back up the low mileage, old tax discs, and some early invoices. There's also the book pack with owner's handbook, radio guide and security instructions. The service book has five stamps up to October 1989. There's also a spare key as well.

THE SKULL OF THE BELLEROPHON SHIP'S GOAT WHICH SUPPLIED MILK FOR NAPOLEON AND HIS SUITE 28.5 cm wide across horns18.5 cm long Preserved and passed through generations of the Maitland family as belonging to the goat that supplied Captain Maitland and the Emperor Napoleon with milk during their passage to England in 1815. The skull can be seen, balanced on a table incorporating a plank from the gangway on which Napoleon surrendered in a photograph, taken, “By special permission of Mr F Lewis-Maitland of Lindores, Fifeshire Photograph by W. Keay Latimer” 18cm x 20cm.William Keay Latimer (1878-1923) was operating in Kirkcaldy by 1908, close to the ancestral home of the Maitland family.  The photo from which this is made must have been taken in or before 1909 when it appeared in Edward Fraser’s book, “Bellerophon, the Bravest of the Brave”. Provenance: Rear-Admiral Sir Frederick Lewis Maitland KCB (1777-1839) and thence by descent Dining With Napoleon The Emperor’s Meals feature in many of the accounts of his voyage on the Bellerophon.  He was in the habit of inviting two of the ship’s officers to dine with him each evening.  Sitting at table with the man who had dominated Europe must have been quite an experience for these, mostly young men. Lieutenant Bowerbank recalled a rather disappointing dinner on 18th July 1815: “At a quarter past six dinner was sent up, to which I was invited.  Napoleon took his seat in the middle of the table with Captain Maitland on his right hand.  The whole dinner was dressed in the French style and served upon silver.  Nothing was carved upon the table, the servants removed each dish for the purpose.  Napoleon was very melancholy.  He merely inquired (addressing himself to Captain Maitland and me) if the beef was good in England, and whether we had there plenty of vegetables?  He, however, made a very hearty dinner. On the removal of the dishes a cup of very strong coffee was served to each. It was poured out by a servant of Napoleon's. Whilst filling his master's cup the poor fellow's hand slipped, and part of the coffee was spilt upon Buonaparte. He said nothing, but gave such a look full in the man's face as not only conveyed the wish, but really seemed to annihilate him. For he immediately resigned his office and quitted the cabin.” The Emperor, especially in his first few days aboard Bellerophon went out of his way to make himself agreeable.  Just as Captain Maitland did all he could to make things as comfortable as they could be made for his guests.  Meals were the few causes of discord.   On his first morning aboard Napoleon and Maitland sat down at 9 for what the latter called an English-style breakfast of tea, coffee and cold meats.  Napoleon ate little and looked unhappy.  Asking why, Maitland found that a hot breakfast was the norm in France.   Thereafter they ate in the French manner. Goats at Sea At first glance a goat serving on one of His Majesty’s ships might look incongruous.  But Captain Maitland’s goat stood in a long naval tradition. There are two broad reasons why she was there: Endurance Unlike the steam-powered ships that replaced them, the sailing warships of Captain Maitland’s time had essentially unlimited endurance.  Steam ships needed to come in to port to coal. Sailing ships didn’t. Their time at sea was limited only by what their sailors could stand; and so by the quantity and quality of food and drinking water they could store. The long sea time of which these ships were capable facilitated a particular form of warfare, at which Britain’s Royal Navy excelled: blockade.  The safety of the British Isles and of British merchant ships at sea was secured not primarily by stationing warships off British ports or by escorting merchant vessels but by stationing fleets off enemy ports.   Enemy ships were penned in harbour or engaged once they put to sea.  His commerce could be stanched at source. This is the blockade that Captain Maitland and the Bellerophon were maintaining off Rochefort.  Blockade duty of this kind could involve months at sea.  Sailors were generally given a plentiful, but monotonous diet.  Food that wasn’t salted, pickled or dried would quickly perish. So anything fresh (goat’s milk in our case) was appreciated. Health Britain’s sailing navy conducted voyages of exploration, thousands of miles in duration.  Captains saw how these torein to their men’s health.  They linked this to the monotonous diet.  Though science was not ready to guide them, they instinctively knew that variety made for good health. Here is the story (told by Samuel Johnson, no less) of a goat that circumnavigated the globe:The Well-Travelled Goat - Untold lives blog. Floating Farmyards In consequence, ships could resemble floating menageries.  Not just goats but sheep, cattle, pigs, hens and geese went to sea with the Royal Navy.  In October 1760 HMS Somerset, a ship smaller than the Bellerophon, left Messina with 60 oxen.  In January 1761 HMS Elizabeth sailed the Indian Ocean with 71 head of cattle aboard.  These herds would likely have been distributed amongst other ships of their squadron when they arrived on station.  But Admiral Hawke thought it reasonable that a ship of the line in winter should carry some 40 sheep and a dozen oxen for its own consumption.   Officers, Men & Goats It is commonly thought that while officers enjoyed fresh meat and milk their men subsisted on a narrow diet.  This wasn’t entirely the case.  Life at sea in the 1800s reflected the strong class divisions ashore.  But fresh beef (when available) formed part of the diet of all.  Ours was the captain’s goat, but most captains allowed sailors of all ranks to bring their own livestock aboard.  They made a mess and could be a nuisance at sea, but their health-giving benefits were widely understood.  Enlightened officers preferred their men spending their money this way than on the likely alternative – drink.  A Goat’s Position at Sea Most livestock spent their time at sea in a pen or coup.  Goats, by tradition, roamed free.  Steadiness of foot suited them to life on a rolling deck.  This did not altogether contribute to their popularity.  Their tendency to eat whatever they found being the cause of much complaint. Wider Service Goats have not limited their service to Britain’s Royal Navy.  The Prestigious US Naval Academy has one for its mascot: Why does the U.S. Naval Academy have a goat as its mascot? (navytimes.com)  .  Ashore, a goat (usually selected from a Royal herd) is the mascot of the Royal Welsh Regiment.  By tradition, a military goat leads the Welsh Rugby team onto the field in Cardiff

Registration No: 758 XWB Frame No: VS5T0057985 MOT: ExemptMammoth creation by Retrospective Scooters, LondonSpecialised parts by Lino Brotto, Italian restoration master and fabricator for The Piaggio Museum. Now fully running with a V5C presentThe Vespa Six Day Racers Sei Giorni were the special Piaggio works race machines for the endurance race tournaments held back in the 1940's and early 1950's by all the big Italian two wheel manufacturers to prove that their bikes and scooters were tough and reliable. They would race them around Italy over the rough road surfaces (just after the war) and they they competed with Lambretta, but also Ducati, MV Augusta, Laverda, Moto Guzzi, Bianchi and many more. These six day racers were not any ordinary factory specification Vespa but an improved modified, strengthened and tuned scooter to combat the semi off road conditions, reliability being the key and make it to the end of that days course. This machine is an evocation of the very last version of the Sei Giorni with the 10" wheels and twin spare wheels. Retrospective Scooters of London used the chassis of a notably 1959 Douglas Vespa as the basis of the project. They actually flew to Italy to meet Lino Brotto, the famous restorer of many of the rarest Vespa models for the Piaggio factory museum. Lino provided many specialist parts needed to make a six-day racer replica and also showed them the skills required to replicate the bodywork of this special racer. The London Scooter Bodyshop undertook the mammoth task of moulding and metal fabrication of the frame into the specialist racer body shape adding special extra strength plates and leg shield shaping. Specialist parts include the long-range tank, map holder, spare wheel holders, shortened handlebars, side stand, seamless mudguard, strengthened swing arm, engine panel catches and holder, air intake and bash plates. The engine is a GS150 with an extra curved kickstart, special flywheel and cylinder cowling. We are informed that the scooter starts and runs 'like new' and is the ultimate copy of this iconic Vespa Factory racer of which there were only around 100 made. This was made with the intention to be an exact copy using the official book as a guide and copying it down to the last detail. Registration No: UJT 377S Frame No: 44974 MOT: ExemptThe screen-used scooter from the 1979 cult movie Quadrophenia No replica, the actual real deal scooter Also featured in ‘The Grand Mod Experience’ by Carol HarrisonExtensive provenance fileOriginal Allstyle accessories still attachedRunning well and offered with a V5 for use on the roadThe cult status of The Who’s 1979 'rock opera' film Quadrophenia needs no introduction and its appeal grows ever stronger as the years go by. A magical infusion of culture with its distinctive working-class '60s Mod appeal starring predominantly unknown starlets who later largely shot to huge fame including Sting, Toyah Wilcox, Lesley Ash, Phil Daniels, John Altman, Phil Davis and many more in this gritty masterpiece directed by a young Frank Roddam for The Who Films produced by Bill Curbishley and Roy Baird. In a later interview with actor Phil Davis who played 'Chalky' - ‘the ponce’, he recalled how the young actors learned to ride on mopeds as they had no access to the scooters until the filming started. The comedic, almost tragic, moment when 'Chalky’s' scooter (played by Phil Davis) crashes into some bins when he was run off the road by Rockers, as the Mods were entering Brighton, is one of the many unforgettable highlights of the film (officially known as 'Scene 66 - Road to Brighton' in the film script) - '"It looked good from back there", said Jimmy as they left Chalky lying by the road to fend for himself ' - And this is one of the most endearing features about this scooter. There was only one, unlike Sting's scooter where multiple replacements were waiting in the wings, 'Chalky’s' (Phil Davis) scooter saw real action and had to be patched up multiple times after many takes. It is noticeable how poor some of the continuity was and a keen eye will notice how the headset on 'Chalky’s' scooter changes from a rectangular GP to SX type and back again. The corresponding forks also had to be changed and then back again once more. The same with the mirrors, which also changed positions. In researching this, it is because most of the Brighton scenes were filmed first and the London scenes later. To make the original GP look more period, the SX head set was added and the early '60s prop registration number 'DCB 647'. According to our vendor, it was so damaged in early filming that the old GP's rectangular item had to be put back on. The scene where 'Chalky' rides out of Brighton with ‘Monkey’ (Toyah Wilcox) on the back, we see again the SX head-set, so this was filmed before the aforementioned scene 66 where the main damage occurred. We are delighted to say that the original GP head-set top is still with the scooter and is included in the lot.How this scooter has survived and is actually still here is another story and involves the vendor being in the right place at the right time - twice! In 1978, the Dorset-based Modrapheniacs Scooter Club was a large and very active club, particularly as this was a very early time in the ‘Mod Revival’. As a club, they headed to the Southend Mod Rally in 1978 and it is here that the first breakthrough happened. 'UJT 377S', a SIL GP150, was purchased the year before by club newcomer Scott Willis. Bill Curbishley and Frank Roddam were at the Southend rally looking for material, extras and scooters for their upcoming film. Four scooters were chosen from the group; 'Jimmy’s' Li150, a Pink GP owned by our vendor (later seen in the film at 'Goldhawk'), a Jet 200 owned by Rob ‘Yob’ Williams and the scooter we present here, 'Chalky’s' White GP150 owned by Scott Willis. They were each paid £300 for the hire of their scooters and were also later invited to work as extras for £20 a day. Our vendor was known as ‘Mod 12’ and is also mentioned in the book ‘Quadrophenia - The Complete Guide, by Layne Patterson’.The scooters were returned following the filming. Scott Willis was very unhappy with the condition of the scooter which was returned to him with missing side panels and a broken headset amongst other damage. He complained to the film company who subsequently sent him £400, enough to buy a new scooter in 1979! The damaged scooter was then sold to our vendor for £100 and swiftly tidied-up with rattle-can paint. The scooters attended the premiere of Quadrophenia which was held at The Plaza in Regent Street, London on the 16th August 1979 which was attended by The Who - without recently deceased Keith Moon, stars, the cast and crew. Our vendor rode the scooter there! The original entrance ticket, signed at the premiere by Phil Daniels and Bob Geldof, is included with the lot.One must remember that despite the initial youth appeal during the Mod revival of the early 1980s, the real cult status of the film came many years later. Our vendor removed the accessories and sold the scooter to his friend Phil Cheney, who subsequently sold it to the Blue Diamond Scooter Club in 1983 before being acquired by a lady named Sheryl. It then disappeared until it was seen at a 1994 scooter parts fair on the stand of Bedlam Scooters. Our vendor, being one of the only people who knew what it was, spotted the registration number and bought the scooter back for the second time for what he says were 'nostalgic reasons'. That was the second time he was in the right place at the right time. Many years later, in 2019, he was contacted by Carol Harrison, producer of all things Mod, including ‘All or Nothing - The Musical’, who was organising a Quadrophenia reunion and the ‘Grand Mod Experience’ for the Cancer Research charity at the August 2019 bank holiday Mod gathering, The Grand Hotel Brighton. He was asked if he would bring 'Chalky’s' scooter to the show to exhibit, which he did. Just prior to the event, the scooter went through South West Scooters in Yeovil, who returned it to its Quadrophenia appearance and attached the original accessories our vendor had kept for all of those years. These included the mirrors, Cuppini rear and front racks, front crash bars and Ulma front bumper which are all the original pieces (although the flyscreen is a similar replacement but with the original fur). As of 2024, the scooter is 'in good running order' and still with its original SIL GP150 engine, which fired-up easily on our visit. It has a current V5 and can be used on the road.As one of the principal scooters in one of the most important cult films of our times, this scooter and its part in contemporary popular culture, together with the provenance that accompanies, should be of major interest to collectors of rock memorabilia and historical scooters.https://youtu.be/8e81BDzm6Dw For more information, please contact: Paul Diamond info@vintagescooters.co.uk 07768 313001
