Natural History: Two Late 19th Century Armorial Green Sea Turtle Shells (Chelonia Mydas), two very large adult Green Sea turtle shells, each paintedTyerman example 72.5cm by 91cm Warrenne example 75.5cm by 92cmWith CITES A10 (non-transferable) licence nos. 627004/01 and 627033/02Of the two, one is marked with the coat of arms of the Tyerman family and the other the assumed coat of arms of the Warren family. It is a possibility that the shells relate to husband and wife, Albert Henry Warren of Chelsea (1830-1911), and Augusta Warren née Tyerman (1831-1909). Albert Henry Warren was described in the census as an “Artist and Ornamental Designer” and wrote A Guide to Beginners on the Art of Illuminating (1860) which advises students on “heraldic methods of expressing colours”. Warren was the son of Henry Warren (1794–1879), one-time President of the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour and a painter specialising in oriental subjects inspired by David Roberts RA RBA who was famous for his works depicting Tangiers, Egypt, Nubia, the Sinai, Jordan, and Lebanon. It is a possibility that Albert Henry Warren painted on these Green Sea Turtle shells possibly to homage his father’s presidency of the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour and his father’s celebrated picture, The Return of the Pilgrims from Mecca, c. 1847-1848 which was praised for its “Eastern and Egyptian character” (Literary Gazette and Journal of Belles Lettres, Arts, Sciences, &c., 1848). See Christie’s, London, 29 April 2019, Orientalist Art, lot 1. The Loggerhead Sea Turtle is native to the Mediterranean Sea which borders the northern coast of Egypt and the eastern shore of Lebanon – places Warren’s father made a successful career painting. By doing so, Warren may well be aligning himself closer to his father’s oriental art career, and therefore position in the echelons of London’s art society, while insinuating his family’s name as that of an ancient family. Warren after all was fascinated in heraldry reflecting wider middle-and upper-class Victorian fascinations of heraldic symbols and meanings. In Fairbairn's Book of Crests, 1905 ed, p. 37., it records a coat of arms for a ‘Warren-Warren, John Rosier, Esquire’ formed from the Warren coat of arms and Tyerman coat of arms. John Rosier Warren was born in 1862 and was the son of Albert and Augusta Warren.

‘I have sworn a great oath never to use or countenance the use of the name “Lawrence”, as referring to me, again, in public or private’ LAWRENCE T. E.: (1888-1935) British army officer, archaeologist, diplomat and writer, renowned for his role in the Arab Revolt (1916-18) and the Sinai and Palestine Campaign (1915-18) against the Ottoman Empire during World War I. An excellent A.L.S., T E Shaw, one page, folio, Karachi, India, 5th January 1927, to an unidentified correspondent (although evidently a writer whom Lawrence held in some esteem). Lawrence announces, 'I have sworn a great oath never to use or countenance the use of the name “Lawrence”, as referring to me, again, in public or private', continuing 'So that would settle the question of my introducing your book, I'm afraid' and explaining 'Of course I write, or rather I try to write, occasionally: unsigned articles, or articles signed by virgin names. They are worth two guineas a thousand words, which I am told is a better rate than usual. They cost me more than that, in trouble, even at my R.A.F. rate of 3/6 a day! And no publisher would be moved to publish your work, because it had an unknown man's introduction before it.' Shaw, however, offers his advice and a further clarification of his decision to his correspondent, 'But why should you think an introduction necessary?......Probably the right man will take what you have written on its merits, and that should be much more gratifying than to be helped. I did twice, in the old days, help people by introducing their books: but one, Richard Garnett, was dead, and that pardoned the offence. The other, Doughty, was a special case: I had been trying to persuade all London to reprint him, and at last one beginning-publisher said “I will, if you'll preface it” :- and what could I do? Doughty was very nice about it: but it felt like scratching one's name on Westminster Abbey. Introductions to publishers I will (and do) willingly give. Several people with good stuff have been helped by me into print. It's a matter of knowing the proper tradesmen. Have you tried Cape? He is enterprising, and the best producer of commercial books in London (for format). If you will send me a sample of your stuff I'll see that it reaches his reader (Edward Garnett, a critic of genius) with my opinion. I have no doubt that it's the right stuff: and it should be exactly right for the particular public. If Cape says “NO”, I'd suggest Faber and Gwyer for second string: but Cape an easy first. Secker is too difficult: and the big men too staid'. A rare letter of fine content in which Lawrence affirms his desire for anonymity and proves himself to be a good guide in the intricacies behind the scenes of publishing. Some very light creasing and a few minor tape stains to the lower central area of the letter, only very minimally affecting a few words of text and part of the signature, otherwise about VGFollowing his legendary exploits in Arabia, Lawrence had become a household name by the early 1920s and enlisted in the Royal Air Force in August 1922 as an aircraftman under the name John Hume Ross. However, less than a year later, his identity was exposed, and he was forced out of the RAF in February 1923. Changing his name once again, to T. E. Shaw, he repeatedly petitioned to re-join the RAF and was finally readmitted in August 1925. Lawrence's Seven Pillars of Wisdom was published in December 1926 and the renewed publicity it brought resulted in his assignment to bases as Karachi, from where the present letter was written, and Miramshah in British India, where he remained until the end of 1928. Herbert Jonathan Cape (1879-1960) British publisher who founded the London publishing house of Jonathan Cape in 1921, remaining at the head of the firm until 1960. Cape established a reputation for high quality design and production and published a range of English-language authors including Robert Frost, Ian Fleming, James Joyce and T. E. Lawrence.Edward Garnett (1868-1937) English writer, critic and literary editor who was instrumental in the publication of D. H. Lawrence's Sons and Lovers. Edward Garnett was the son of Richard Garnett (1895-1906) English scholar, librarian, biographer and poet, who is also referenced in the present letter.

2000 Ford Racing PumaReg. no. W657 AVWChassis no. WF0CXXGAECYR13644Engine no. YR13644Transmission: ManualMileage: 85,180MOT: June 2023 The Ford Racing Puma could be considered a homologation special. However, unusually, the car was designed to commemorate Fords success with the car in motorsport as opposed to a competition car. It was a way of showing the world its motorsport technologies through a production-based car. With 1000 units planned, just 500 were ever built for the UK market with all conversions being carried out by the famous motorsport outfit, Tickfords between 1999 and 2001.The stunning imperial blue colour of the Racing Puma really made the wider, aluminium factory arches stand out, but these builds were not just about looks. The cars weighing in at just 1174kg, sport an Alcon brake setup at the front, a stronger IB5 gearbox and shafts, as well as uprated cams, air intake and exhaust system. Despite only producing 155bhp from its 1.7 Zetec engine, the little feisty Puma still pushes from 0-62 in 7.8 seconds. The handling was left to Ford’s specialists at Boreham to fettle with a certain Stig Blomqvist reportedly spending a large amount of time helping the team refine the handling on the little coupe. In period the S1400 and S1600 rally cars were piloted by the likes of David Higgins and Sebastien Loeb as Ford further cemented itself in the world of motorsport. This particular example has been kept as part of a rally family’s collection for some time and has only seen 1000 miles in the last 14 years; the V5C document shows just two previous owners. It has had some recent recommissioning work, the front bumper has been painted, and overall, the car remains in very original condition, having averaged just 3,500 miles per year. It is in good condition mechanically and the interior is in fantastic order with the Alcantara wheel and seats looking factory fresh. Every Puma Racing was numbered with this particular car sporting number 0318 on its manifold which is also reflected in its original owner’s guide supplement. The sale includes a large amount of history with original stamped service book, a large number of parts and service receipts, many of which are from PumaBuild and a current V5C document. This is a great opportunity to own a well-presented example of a limited build, motorsport based, Ford collector’s car.Estimate: £20,000 – 25,000To be auctioned along with a fantastic selection of other vehicles on March 5th at our Showell Farm site, SN15 2NU. Viewing is welcome prior to sale and all cars are sold as seen, condition reports can be requested on each lot by contacting us direct. Lots are not available to buy prior to auction. Fully illustrated catalogue is available on the Richard Edmonds Auction website. Bids can be made online, by telephone or live on site. All lots are subject to commission.Vehicles that are un-registered or on foreign plates may require Import Duty and Vat to be paid upon purchase via HMRC prior to registering with the DVLA for a UK plate, if you are not sure please ask. For classic cars over 30 years this equates to 5% Duty on the final value.

1981 Rolls-Royce Corniche 6.75 litre Series 5000 3 door fixed head coupe Harvey-Bailey handling kit fitted with original beige Connolly hide interior  Registration: VEX 207X Chassis:  CRH0050666 Odometer: 72000 Transmission: Automatic  MOT: October 2023 Guide £30,000-£35,000  . Full book pack including service book   . Factory handbook  . Everflex roof with quarter badges  . Correct period audio equipment   . Leather headlining  . Headlight wipers  . History file showing work done by P & A Wood and Shadow Vehicle Services   . One of only 1108 cars produced  . Complete with correct Rolls-Royce too kit Outside Finished in its original factory colour of Seychelles blue. The wheel arches and rear panels show no sign of rust or repair. The paintwork is in generally good order overall apart from a tiny stone chip on the bonnet and some very small paint bubbles , namely offside rear wing above the swage line , near side front wing and door just below the glass . There are some very small bubbles under the Everflex roof above the rear window and front window driver’s side. The chrome is very good all round. The wheels and hub caps are without issue , the tyres show a good tread depth. Inside The seats are original and in fine condition with the exception of signs of minor wear on driver’s door armrest. The door cards and headlining are without issue as are the carpets and pleasingly the correct MPW drivers mat is present and undamaged. The woodwork all appears without damage, chrome and dials excellent as is the steering wheel. Mechanicals  The Rolls-Royce runs sweetly and drives as it should with plenty to power and a supple ride. The handling is very good due to the fitment of the Harvey Bailey kit. The brakes operate effectively and the suspension operates as it should. History There are bills on file dating back until 2006 and pleasingly the full book pack is present including the service book shows stamps from new until 2008 at 69573 miles. The latest record of work completed is 3rd January 2018 which records a full service at 70661 miles and then on 7th April 2018 with work carried out by marque specialist and Rolls-Royce main dealer P&A Wood.     Our opinion This car was supplied new by Mann Egerton & Co in October 1981, making it one of the very last of the 1,108 Fixed Head Coupes to be built, before Rolls-Royce ceased production of the hard top Corniche variant for good in March 1981. The production date of March would indicate that this car spent several months being coach built by Mulliner Park Ward. These “last hurrah” cars (built between 1979-1981) are known as the 5000 Series cars and benefitted from vastly upgraded handling and finishes over the earlier cars. They share the majority of the same suspension and handling components as their successor, the later Rolls-Royce Silver Spirit. Our car is finished in its original colour combination of Seychelles blue with beige hide interior and present very well in all areas with beautiful woodwork. On the road, the Corniche drives very well and the upgraded handling of the 5000 series is clearly evident couple with the fitment of the Harvey-Bailey handling kit which for those who know  totally transforms these cars. These coach-built cars have long been undervalued though the market has finally recognised that they represent excellent value and due to the rarity are tipped as a very strong future investment.

The centre caps have also dulled with age and can be replaced inexpensively.   Inside  The interior of this Boxster is near perfect which can only be faulted on the slightest of wear on the drivers seat bolster. The black carpets are good and the cabin is dry and damp free. It also has that familiar Porsche smell which seems to have disappeared  in the later generation cars.   Mechanical The car pulls well through all 6 gears and stops effectively and straight, with the Super Sound sports exhaust not being too intrusive as some can be. All the while you are accompanied by the throaty flat 6 induction noise from that wonderful 3.2 S engine.   All for tyres are in good condition with plenty of tread left.  History   The service history book has 5 stamps from various Porsche centres the last being Porsche Centre West London in 2015 at 33,380 from which time the maintenance is taken over by specialists including Zuffenhaus, RPM Specialist Cars and Paul Garland. No need to use the audio equipment, just drop the roof and listen to the fabulous exhaust note. This car wants for nothing and is ready to use and enjoy for the season, and sure fire solid investment.

All 4 wheels have been refurbished recently and all four matching Pirelli tyres have good tread depth remaining.   Inside  Typical Japanese interior; simple but functional is in excellent order with some slight wear on the drivers seat bolster and the seat base bolster is also showing some signs of distortion commensurate with the mileage displayed. Lot 108

A Channel Passage And Other Poems, By Algernon Charles Swinburne, London, Chatto & Windus 1904, a rare first edition, with five raised bands, gilt titles on red labels, six gilt-ruled compartments with gilt devices and “1904” in gilt at the base of the spine, with gilt-fillet borders on full crushed Levant, gilt dentelle borders with the bookplate of Raphaeli Mauritii Bauer on swirled marbled endpapers, the half-title followed by the imprint of Spottiswoode and Co Ltd, New-Street Square, London, followed by the title page and a dedication to William Morris and Edward Burne Jones, three pages for the table of contents, and 213 pages of text followed by the imprint of Spottiswoode again at the bottom of the last page of text, and the top edge is gilt, all in a fine binding by Zaehnsdorf. Swinburne (1837 - 1909) was an English poet, playwright, novelist, and critic. who wrote several novels and collections of poetry. He devised a poetic form called the roundel, which corresponded to the French rondeau. The title poem here was inspired by a trip to France: in 1855, Swinburne made his first trip abroad with his uncle. As they were crossing the English Channel, a violent storm thrilled the young poet with its awe-inspiring display of lightning and thunder. It was an unforgettable experience that stuck with Swinburne all his life - the poem here which recalled that crossing was written 40 years after the event, just five years before his death. He was influenced by the works of Shakespeare, Shelley, William Morris, Rossetti, Robert Browning, Tennyson, and Victor Hugo - a temple mount of writers and authors - and he was nominated for the Nobel Prize for Literature every year from 1903 to 1907. Swinburne was also a controversial poet. He was an alcoholic and algolagniac and liked to be flogged, and he wrote about many taboo topics, such as lesbianism, sado-masochism, and anti-theism, and he was considered a decadent poet; these taboo subjects often attracted Victorian ire, which led to him becoming persona non grata in high society. Rumors about his perversions often filled the broadsheets. Raphaeli Bauer (1864 - 1947) was born in Germany and was a foreign banker trading from London, as well as a stock broker at Drapers Gardens with Eustace Blundell, so he was a man of means. The title poem was first published individually in 1899, and this is a beautiful copy of the rare first edition. It’s easy to tell this is a first edition, too, because it was published by Chatto and Windus, and there is just a single date of 1904 on the title page and no other printings listed on the copyright page. (See Bill McBride, A Pocket Guide to the Identification of First Editions, McBride / Publisher, 585 Prospect Ave., West Hartford, CT 06105.) The book is crown 8vo. and measures 7 5/8 x 5 1/2 in. wide, with clean text and just a hint of rubbing along the front edge of the spine, at the crown and two tips. Overall a very attractive copy of this first edition by Swinburne, bound by one of the premiere binders of the nineteenth century.

Lot 26

This is one lot with four books by Charles Dickens all related to Christmas. a) A Christmas Carol, Charles Dickens, New York & London, G.P. Putnam’s Sons 1900, Copyright, 1900 (for Designs) By G.P. Putnam’s Sons, The Knickerbocker Press, New York at bottom of the copyright page, the illustrations are from designs by Frederick Coburn, with twelve illustrations in photogravure, including the frontispiece, and nineteen illustrations in black and white, instead of photogravure, with red-captioned tissue guards present for each plate; 3/4 bound, four raised bands, with gilt labels and gilt lettering on the spine, modest decorations on the spine, with marbled covers and endpapers; the top edge is gilt, the book is 157 pages long and measures 7 3/4 x 5 1/2 in. wide, with light rubbing and modest wear at the tips. This was the first of Dickens’ Christmas books and came out in 1843, and it’s a perennial favorite of children and people who love Christmas. b) A Christmas Carol By Charles Dickens, Illustrated By Fritz Kredel For The Peter Pauper Press, Mount Vernon, New York, circa 1944, with a green slipcase, red and green holly decorations on cover, blank endpapers, a red topstain, and inscribed “Ashley Day Leavitt, best times for 1944 - last paragraph on page 26” on the second front free endpaper; Ashley Day Leavitt (1877–1959) was a Yale-educated Congregational minister who led the State Street Church in Portland, Maine, and later the Harvard Congregational Church in Brookline, Massachusetts; he was a frequent public speaker during the early twentieth century and was awarded an honorary degree from Bowdoin College for his pastorship of several congregations during wartime; the last paragraph on page 26 starts with “Mankind is my business. The common welfare was my business; charity, mercy, forbearance, and benevolence were, all, my business”; the book also includes a Christmas card which reads “The Reading of the Christmas Carol by Dr. Leavitt on Wednesday night before Christmas is one of our richest traditions. So we are sending it to you that wherever you may be on date, you may share with us the Christmas Spirit of Harvard Church”; a topstain is a normal coloring applied by the printer and does not indicate a “stain” on a book - it is not a “bad” thing; the book is 8vo. and possibly a first edition by Peter Pauper Press - 1944 is an early date for a Peter Pauper edition of this book - and book is 108 pages long and the slipcase measures 8 3/8 x 6 in. wide, with light browning on the spine and a tape mark on the front free endpaper where the Christmas card was attached to the book; the inscription by Ashley Day Leavitt and the attached card is what makes this book noteworthy. c) The Holly-Tree, By Charles Dickens, With An Introduction By Walter Jerrold, Thirty-one Illustrations, Philadelphia: Henry Altemus Company on the title page, Copyright 1904 Henry Altemus on the copyright page, with the dust jacket, a beautifully illustrated front cover on the book itself, vignette endpapers with the owner’s name and date inscribed on the front free endpaper (“Elva Bommuleir from Mita G Ott, XMas 1910”), with an attractive colored frontis, black and white illustrations inside, 109 pages (counting the illustration on the last page), and the dust jacket reads “The Holly-Tree No. 1” on the spine and is the first in the Holly-Tree series by Altemus. The book measures 7 1/2 x 5 1/2 in. wide and the green hard-bound volume is in excellent condition, while the dust jacket is in great condition on the back and has some modest chips on the crown and the tips of the front cover. The Holly-Tree Inn was originally published as a short story in the Christmas 1855 edition of Household Words, a publication edited by Dickens in the 1850’s, and it was considered a portmanteau story, or a story written by several authors. The portmanteau story lent itself well to the medium of weekly publications because it allowed for authors to work together to compile a single plot rather quickly, and such stories increased in popularity during the Victorian era. Dickens only wrote three of the sections and the framing story for The Holly Tree Inn (The Guest, The Boots, and The Bill), and Wilkie Collins and three others contributed to the rest of this special Christmas extra. The story published in book form here is called a first edition thus by Altemus because it is based on the original story and has only one date on the copyright page and no additional printings. See Bill McBride, A Pocket Guide to the Identifications of First Editions, West Hartford, Ct., 1995 for first editions by Chapman And Hall. d) The Readings Of Charles Dickens As Arranged And Read By Himself, With Illustrations, London: Chapman & Hall 1883 on the front cover, and “Copyright” at the bottom of the front cover, The Readings of Mr. Charles Dickens, As Condensed By Himself on the title page, Price Sixpence, green wrappers, 64 pages, double columns, with ads on the interior front cover and on the interior and exterior covers at the rear. Dickens started doing readings for charity in 1853, and the readings here include A Christmas Carol In Four Staves, Bardell And Pickwick, David Copperfield, Mr. Bob Sawyer’s Party, The Story of Little Dombey, Nicholas Nickleby Four Chapters, Boots At The Holly-Tree Inn, Doctor Marigold, Nicholas Nickleby Three Chapters, and Mrs. Gamp; the book measures 11 1/2 x 8 1/2 in. wide, the front cover is detached and has wear, and there are creases at the tips on some pages, but very readable.

Sakoontala or The Lost Ring, An Indian Drama, Translated Into English Prose And Verse From The Sanskrit of Kalidasa, By Monier Willams, New York, Dodd Mead 1885, a limited edition, with exquisite gold and silver embroidered covers in beautiful relief, in a velvet-lined custom box. The limitation page says there were four copies printed on vellum and 110 copies printed on Japan paper in November 1885, and this is number 104 of the 110 copies. The spine and covers are exquisite and not like a typical English or American binding - you have to see them to believe them. The endpapers are blank, the book was published by Dodd Mead and printed at the De Vinne Press in New York, there’s a sixteen-page introduction followed by a list of the persons in the story and a guide to pronouncing their names, then 236 pages with ornate colorful borders, the imprint of The Press of Theo L. De Vinne towards the rear, and all the edges are gilt. Sakoontala was the wife of Dushyanta and mother of the Emperor Bharata, the story is about a love affair, a secret marriage, separation and a curse, and a reunion, and the theme of the story is that true love is immortal. We believe that Sakoontala is riding in the chariot on the front cover; her name is sometimes spelled Shakuntala, or Sakuntala in Sanskrit, and she turns out to be the heroine of this great love story from the Hindu epic, the Mahabharata. Kalidasa was a fifth-century Sanskrit author who is often considered ancient India's greatest poet and playwright. He had a great influence on other Sanskrit works and on all Indian literature, and his Sanskrit plays influenced late eighteenth and early nineteenth-century European literature; Monier Williams (1819 - 1899) was a British scholar who studied Sanskrit and translated Kalidasa’s play. The book is a large 8 Vo. and measures 10 x 8 in. wide, and the custom box has five raised bands and gilt lettering on the spine, with rubbing at the heel and corners of the box, and scraping on the bottom of the box, where it can’t be seen unless you turn the box upside down. An exquisite binding of an ancient Hindu epic by one of India’s greatest poets and playwrights.

Lot 62

This is an American printing of Samuel Johnson’s Dictionary of the English Language, in the original leather binding, with “Johnson’s Dictionary” in gilt letters on the spine, and the title page reads “Long’s Stereotype Edition, Johnson’s Dictionary Of The English Language In Miniature. To Which Are Added, An Alphabetical Account Of The Heathen Deities, And A Copious Chronological Table Of Remarkable Events Discoveries And Inventions In Europe, By The Rev. Joseph Hamilton, M.A. With A Continuation Of The Said Table To The Present Period. Also, A New And Complete American Chronology, Containing an accurate account of Events from the discovery of the New World to this time. First New York, From The Late English Edition. New-York: Printed And Published By G. Long, No.71 Pearl-Street 1817”. The binding has the title in gilt on the spine, with pieces missing from the spine label; the signature of J. Lyman and a bookseller’s label from W.B. Gilley are on the front paste-down - William B. Gilley was a member of the Association of Master Book Binders of New York from 1814 to 1820, which tells you the book had to be purchased in that time period - then the frontis portrait of Dr. Johnson by G. Long of New York, the title page, an Advertisement to the English Edition dated June 1, 1799, the text is 252 pages long with words and their meanings in double columns, then the account of the Heathen Deities, the first Chronological Table, and the Complete Chronological American Table, for a total of 293 pages in all. The first London edition was published in 1755, the first American edition was published in Boston in 1804 - it was an abridged edition because the first London edition took over eight years to compile and required six helpers and listed 40,000 words - and this is the first New York edition published in America. The book is 5 3/4 x 3 5/8 in. wide, has age wear, the missing pieces from the spine label, and it was a handy pocket guide to the English language back in the early 1800’s.

Queen Victoria, By Richard R Holmes F.S.A., Librarian to the Queen, London and Paris, Boussod, Valadon & Co. Fine Art Publishers to Her Majesty 1897, a first edition of this biography (the dates on the title page and copyright page match), with a gilt title, gilt decorations and five raised bands on the spine, green morocco boards, gilt dentelles with marbled endpapers and a green and gilt bookplate which reads “Diamond Jubilee Gift to Robert and Eliza Cumming with Much Love from William and Elizabeth 1897”, “Queen Victoria” on the half-title, then a colored frontispiece of Queen Victoria and the Prince of Wales with a lettered tissue guard. The text was set up and printed in London by J S Virtue, the plates were engraved and printed by Boussod, Valadon near Paris in 1897, and the top edge is gilt. There are 41 plates altogether (the colored frontispiece and forty plates in black and white), with tissue guards protecting all the plates and red titles on each of the tissue guards, and there are 195 pages of text, followed by the Contents and List of Illustrations at the rear. The book is 4 To. and measures 13 x 10 14 in. wide. We’ve seen other copies with wormholes and detached boards, and this is nothing like that. The hinges and boards are solid, and there’s not a worm in sight. There’s light rubbing at the edges of the spine and light wear at the heel and tips, light foxing on three pages (177, 185, and 193), and the rest of the pages are clean and bright. Queen Victoria was a British monarch who reigned for over sixty years. She ascended the throne in 1837 and the Diamond Jubilee celebrated her 60th year as Queen, and her reign was longer than that of any previous British monarch; she died three and a half years after this book was published. See A Pocket Guide to the Identification of First Editions, Compiled By Bill McBride, McBride Publisher, 585 Prospect Ave., West Hartford CT 06105.

Lot 135

Spanish school of the 18th century."Saint Anne and the Virgin".Carved, gilded and polychrome wood.Measurements: 33 x 17 x 16 cm.Here appears the moment in which Saint Anne teaches Mary her first letters, a theme that does not arise from the evangelical literature but from the popular will to highlight the role of the mother's line in the human education of the Son of God, a will that also turned Saint Anne into the patron saint of the mothers of families. It is therefore a common and traditionally accepted theme, despite the fact that the Scriptures tell us that the infant Virgin was given to the temple for her education. It is an iconography that appeared at the end of the Middle Ages and became popular from the 16th century onwards, with the book appearing as an attribute of Saint Anne from that time onwards. It is a traditional theme framed within the cycle of the Virgin's life, a scene that highlights the importance of Saint Anne's role as educator, guide and protector of little Mary. This theme became very common, especially in the 17th century, in the wake of the Counter-Reformation. Because Protestants questioned Mary's virginity and her role as intercessor before God, Marian themes were particularly popular among artists in Catholic countries. Hence the Immaculate Conception became so fashionable, and numerous scenes related to the Virgin's life were produced.
