1998 Jaguar XK8 Transmission: automaticMileage:71300Jaguar was founded as the Swallow Sidecar Company by Sir William Lyons in 1922, originally making motorcycle sidecars before developing passenger cars. The name was changed to Jaguar after World War II to avoid the unfavourable connotations of the SS initials. Sale to BMC happened in 1966, which in 1968 merged with Leyland Motor Corporation and became British Leyland. Jaguar cars today are designed in Jaguar Land Rover's engineering centres at the Whitley plant in Coventry and at their Gaydon site in Warwickshire, then they are manufactured in Jaguar's Castle Bromwich assembly plant in Birmingham. The Jaguar XK series was introduced at the Geneva Motor Show on 5th of March 1996. The first generation of the series, the XK8, replaced the XJS and was available as a Coupé and convertible. The XK8 was the first eight-cylinder vehicle produced since the Daimler 250. The XK8 came with 17€ alloy wheels, leather interior, wood trim, and side airbags as standard. Presented in Topaz with cream leather interior, this example has covered 71,300 miles and has just three former keepers. The car boasts 19 service stamps with the most recent this Autumn. Featuring cruise control and the usual XK8 refinements this is a lovely, affordable, modern classic which is supplied with a history file containing the original book pack, UK V5C registration document and an MoT test certificate valid until May 2023.Guide Price £5,000 - £8,000
* Doyle (Arthur Conan, 1859-1930). Author, creator of Sherlock Holmes and writer on spiritualism. Autograph Letter Signed, ‘Arthur Conan Doyle’, The Compton Arms Hotel, Minstead letterhead, 9 December 1925, to Mrs Thorn, sending her an assortment of pamphlets (not present), discussing in detail, spirit phenomena, his own psychic experiences and further mentioning the infamous ‘Margery’ case, ‘…When your friend goes into a trance ask…who is the young man’s Guide…When any new entity visits or speaks you will say ‘Do you believe in God?… We - my wife and I - got a direct voice the other day at our second sitting for it. A clear ‘Good evening’ came from above our heads. We were thrilled…. I don’t know if you have followed the Margery case and the persecution of Mrs Crandon in Boston…’, very light stain to bottom of first page with no loss of legibility, 2 pages in a close hand, 8voQTY: (1)NOTE:Mina ‘Margery’ Crandon (1888-1941) was a Boston medium who found herself embroiled in one of the most bitter controversies in American psychic research. Her followers claimed that she was one of the greatest mediums who ever lived, while her critics called her a fraud: her most famous being the escapologist Harry Houdini whose obsessive crusade against her almost cost him his own career. In his introduction to a substantial article in the Boston Herald (26 January 1925) and published shortly after the present letter was written, Conan Doyle wrote – ‘It is Christmas morning and I sit at a table which is heaped with documents and photographs. They are the dossier of the Crandon case. Perhaps one should not work on Xmas day and yet there is no day so holy that one may not use it for the fight for truth, the exposure of evil and the defence of the honour of a most estimable lady. The Margery case will live in history and it is perhaps fitting that I should have some hand in the record since the matter was in a double sense of my begetting.’ The ‘Margery’ book to which Doyle refers in this letter, is likely to be J. Malcolm Bird’s “Margery” The Medium, (1925), which was written in support of ‘Margery’ Crandon.Conan Doyle became absorbed by spiritualism in later life, writing and lecturing on the subject. Interestingly, Conan Doyle was eventually buried in the churchyard of All Saints in Minstead Village having previously been buried vertically in Crowborough.A letter of excellent content and apparently unpublished.

8,795 miles from new, gleaming Moonstone Blue and a superbly original Recaro interior, this is just a bit special. At its introduction in 1982, the Sierra's revolutionary new shape proved a touch more divisive than Ford had anticipated and some serious marketing became a priority, so it was the obvious choice to become the platform for Ford's new competition aspirations in conjunction with Cosworth. It fitted the brief well as it was rear-wheel drive, had good aerodynamics, albeit being prone to lift at high speeds, and was available as a three-door. The new body kit and rear spoiler would sort out the lift issues but, more importantly, Ford still needed to build 5,000 units for homologation, somewhat worrying when the company's initial approach to the dealer network came back with an estimate that suggested they could sell around 1,500 units! The eventual sales record is, of course, history. Ford went on to sell 5,545 three-door cars including the RS500, of which only 500 were built, and the Cosworth engine also found its way into nearly 30,000 Ford Sierra Saloons (Cosworth 3dr, Sapphire 2wd and 4wd).This amazing Sierra Cosworth dates from 1986 and has incredibly covered just 8,795 miles from new. Looking as crisp as ever in Moonstone Blue with a virtually unmarked Recaro grey cloth interior, just two former keepers have had the pleasure of owning this time-warp car from new. It was dry stored in 2003 and only recently emerged from hiding to undergo a thorough recommissioning in April of this year at a cost approaching £7,000. The originality of this car cannot be underestimated, and during its preparation for the sale our vendor employed a professional detailer to present the RS in its best light and he stated that it was perhaps the finest he had ever seen. It's supplied with the original purchase invoice for £16,630 from Henlys Ford, an original Henlys book pack including the owners handbook, audio guide, an official Press Information pack of the period and the Ford Service Plan booklet detailing its first service FOC and its first 6,000 miles service in April 1989 at 5,667 miles. It's simply remarkable to have this level of historical detail with an RS Cosworth all helping to corroborate the tiny mileage and astonishing originality. 'Original' is the key word here, frequently misused, but in the case of D50 UCU, totally appropriate and your early inspection is welcomed and encouraged to confirm that we do not use the word lightly. The Cosworth has always been a car to draw attention, its radical 'whale tail' at the time ensured that it was always meant to be a poster boy of the era, but with their values now reaching such amazing levels, where do we see this, surely never to be repeated, low mileage example taking values today? . A superb, UK-supplied, right-hand drive 550 Maranello finished in classic colours with gleaming Rosso Corsa paintwork, Crema leather seats and Rosso carpets offered from long-term private ownership.Firmly placed in Ferrari's history as one of their finest modern era big GTs, the 550 Maranello's combination of elegant lines and legendary front mounted 12-cylinder engine, meant that these cars had the potential to become instant classics. The 48-valve, 5.5-litre V12 developed 485bhp at 7,000rpm and the 6-speed manual gearbox complements a slightly more even torque curve, ensuring that the power delivery was a little less frenetic, whilst excellent weight distribution and delightful road manners make the 550 Maranello a truly refined driving machine, whilst still capable of almost 200mph. Offered here at the NEC Classic Motor Show 2022 is a superb Ferrari 550 Maranello supplied new by JCT600 Specialist Cars in April 1997 finished in classic colours with Rosso Corsa paintwork, Crema leather interior and matching Rosso carpets. Coming to market from 16-years private ownership and indicating 54,244 miles on the odometer supported by a comprehensive service record.Overall, the 26-year-old Ferrari presents very well, the Rosso Corsa paintwork retains an even finish and deep gloss across the bodywork with uniform panel gaps, the wheels present well and black brake calipers show nicely through the alloy spokes. Inside the cabin space is a factory, special-order Bordeaux leather dashboard that really sets this 550 apart from others and looks fabulous. The leather seats are in good order with minimal wear relative to their age and the limited electronic gadgetry tested appears to function well. Absolutely on-the-button, the 550 fires into life and sounds strong and healthy with no adverse smoke or sounds and we understand that on the road the Ferrari performs well due to its comprehensive maintenance over the years and stops well with well adjusted brakes and matching premium-brand tyres on all four corners.Accompanying the 550 is a history file with Ferrari book pack including a service book stamped up-to-date with 16 stamps from Ferrari agents or specialists with the most recent entry a belt service in 2019 at 54,202 miles. Also within the file are paper invoices supporting many of the services and other maintenance along with old registration documents, Tracker paperwork, spare key and fobs (including the red one) and a wealth of old MOT Certificates with the most recent valid until August 2023. In the car is the tyre inflation system, Ferrari tool kit and a trickle charger to keep the battery maintained when not in use.In summary, this is a lovely 550 Maranello that has clearly been well maintained and has covered a 'sensible' mileage, meaning that it's a car you can continue to use as intended on long road trips without feeling guilty about racking up the miles. Offered at a sensible guide, this lovely modern-classic Ferrari may well turn out to be one of your better decisions.SpecificationMake: FERRARIModel: 550Year: 1996Chassis Number: ZFFZR49C000108275Registration Number: P261 AWTTransmission: ManualDrive Side: Right-hand DriveOdometer Reading: 54500 MilesMake: RHDInterior Colour: CreamClick here for more details and images
A good example of the rare Twin Plenum with a detailed history file that includes the original service book and reams of historical receipts - Offered Without Reserve.Styled as "New Tradition' by Rover at its launch in 1976, the Rover 3500 "Specialist Division One" took the motoring press by storm, winning the European Car of the Year title in 1977. The SD1 can be considered as the last "true" Rover, being the final Rover-badged vehicle to be produced at Solihull, as well as being the last to be designed largely by ex-Rover Company engineers and also the final Rover car to be fitted with the legendary Rover V8 engine. This Rover SD1 Vitesse is a rare and striking ‘twin-plenum’ example of the marque’s modern classic performance-oriented executive saloon, offered in highly original condition and, we believe, one of only 500 examples. It's powered by a naturally aspirated 3.5-litre V8 with a twin side-entry throttle plenum fuel injection system, producing around 200bhp and driving the rear wheels via a five-speed manual transmission.Originally a Jersey-delivered model, the car has had three owners, and has been with the last owner for five years. Brought over to the UK-mainland, the car is currently on a NOVA and we inform prospective bidders that it is their responsibility to register the car with the DVLA. The odometer reading of 67,344 is commensurate with the original service record in the detailed history file which also includes reams of historic receipts and ownership details. Supplied to auction with a current MOT valid until 1st September 2023, cased Elastoplast First Aid Kit and plastic wallet containing the aforementioned Austin Rover Service Record and Consumer Guide..SpecificationMake: ROVERModel: VITESSEYear: 1986Chassis Number: RREW27CM343615Registration Number: TBATransmission: ManualDrive Side: Right-hand DriveOdometer Reading: 67344 MilesMake: RHDInterior Colour: Grey ClothClick here for more details and images

ATHENAEUS OF NAUCRATISDeipnosophistae, in Greek, FIRST EDITION, edited by Marcus Musurus, Greek italic type, capital spaces with guide-letters, dolphin and anchor device on first and last pages, with blank leaf B10 of preliminaries (often lacking), some mostly light dampstaining, final leaf with device laid down, modern half calf over marbled boards, gilt lettered on spine [Adams A2096; Ahmanson-Murphy, 123; Renouard p.67; Vicaire 50], folio (304 x 108mm.), Venice, Aldus Manutius and Andreas Torresanus, August 1514Footnotes:EDITIO PRINCEPS OF THE EARLIEST SURVIVING COOKERY TEXT: a valuable source of information on intellectual mores of the classical world, 'magnifiquement exécutée' (Vicaire). The Deipnosophistae ('Banquet of the learned') is the only known work by Athenaeus of Naucratis, a Greco-Egyptian writing in the early part of the 3rd century AD. In it a variety of scholars are invited to dine at a banquet held at the house of Larensius, a wealthy book-collector and patron of the arts. They debate at length a wide spectrum of topics, notably food, wine and cookery (the work is an important source of Greek, Persian, Roman and Sicilian recipes, many of which would have been lost), homosexuality (an unusually candid portrait for the time), sexual mores in general, health, music and philology. Aldus had planned a Greek edition of the work soon after establishing his press, but only got as far as printing a one-page proof in his second Greek type, which was not used after 1499.This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: •• Zero rated for VAT, no VAT will be added to the Hammer Price or the Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
BRUNEL – THAMES TUNNELManuscript guidebook to Marc Isambard Brunel's Thames Tunnel, entitled 'Sketches and Memoranda/ of the/ Works/ for the/ Tunnel under the Thames/ from/ Rotherhithe to Wapping/ Published and sold at the Tunnel Works Rotherhithe and by/ Messrs Harvey and Darton, 55, Gracechurch St:/ Printed by the Philanthropic Society St.G's F:/ 1828', entitled 'Sketches and Memoranda/ of the/ Works/ for the/ Tunnel under the Thames/ from/ Rotherhithe to Wapping/ Published and sold at the Tunnel Works Rotherhithe and by/ Messrs Harvey and Darton, 55, Gracechurch St:/ Printed by the Philanthropic Society St.G's F:/ 1828', written in a neat attractive hand and illustrated with thirteen finely-drawn vignettes and plans in pen, ink and wash, comprising nine one-page illustrations (including '...View of Wapping... and a transverse section of the Tunnel...', The Shaft, 'Dimensions of the Brickwork', Workmen in the Shield [with cut-out overlay showing the entrance to the Tunnel]), three double-page plans ('A Transverse Section of the Thames', 'Plan of the Premises at Rotherhithe and Wapping', and a cross-section showing the strata of the river) and one pull-down map ('Plan of the Roads and main Objects on the Eastern Part of London... projected by M.I. Brunel... 1827'), text comprising an Introduction, dated January 1828 ('...The present undertaking was projected by M.I. Brunel Esq: F.R.S. whose works for Government have been equally creditable to his scientific abilities and to his personal character...'), and detailed commentary accompanying the illustrations on versos, 30 leaves, 'F & Z' watermark, some light dust-staining and small tears, original half calf with marbled boards, label with manuscript title 'SKETCHES relating to the TUNNEL.' on upper cover, oblong 8vo (102 x 175mm.), 1828Footnotes:MANUSCRIPT GUIDEBOOK FOR BRUNEL'S PIONEERING THAMES TUNNEL, 'THE EIGHTH WONDER OF THE WORLD', SEEMINGLY DERIVING FROM HIS WORKSHOP. A handsome manuscript version of Marc Brunel's popular publication.Despite the proliferation of printed editions of Brunel's guide to the Thames Tunnel project, we have hitherto traced no other manuscript version of the guidebook. Printed guidebooks were produced from early 1827, in order to keep the project in the public eye over the long construction period and also to raise money from visitors to the works, and ran to some seventeen editions over the next thirty-five years, the last appearing in 1863 (for a detailed bibliography see Chrimes, Elton, May & Millet, The Triumphant Bore: A Celebration of Marc Brunel's Thames Tunnel, James Howden, [n.d.]). Marc Brunel himself was responsible for the composing the text, and the engraved plates were taken from drawings supplied by his workshop. Julia Elton in her essay 'The Tunnel in Print' notes that the first edition of March 1827 consisted of plates only, the text and introduction appearing the following August with the title as per our manuscript, Sketches and Memoranda of the works for the tunnel under the Thames. Regular updated editions followed, including translations in the major European languages, with the text constantly rewritten and updated. A month after our version, in February 1828, the printed book had a new title Sketches of the Works for the Tunnel under the Thames which it retained until 1830. Our fine manuscript version would seem to sit between the printed editions of December 1827 (cat. no. 58) and that of January 1828 (cat. no. 59), incorporating several amendments to the text made after 1827 - for example the reference to 'Mr Brunel' in the 1827 Introduction becomes the more formal 'M.I. Brunel Esq. F.R.S.' in both our version and the printed 1828 edition, as well as incorporating extra descriptive text, which might at first suggest that ours is a copy of the later edition. However, the possibility that ours came after the 1828 edition is ruled out by comparison of the meticulously executed illustrations. On comparison, it is noticeable that our drawings are largely unpopulated apart from the figures of workers in the shield. A recognisable top-hatted figure appears in two of the engravings but not in our drawings, that of the brick shaft and again in the longitudinal section of the tunnel, where the same figure observes the work from a niche in the tunnel wall. Similarly, the figure with the pickaxe is absent from our drawing of the shield, as are the figures and carriages from the plan showing the long transverse section of the tunnel. Our exquisite drawings would seem to bear more relation to the originals produced in the workshop (sold in these rooms, 15 November 2017, lot 78) where there is also favourable comparison of the handwriting here to that on a plan ascribed to Brunel's chief engineer, Joseph Pinchbeck. The paper bears the watermark 'F & Z', which is also seen on German paper of the same period. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: •• Zero rated for VAT, no VAT will be added to the Hammer Price or the Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

HACIENDA, THE - Limited-edition Custom-built Bass GuitarA limited-edition bass guitar known as the Hac 51 model, constructed from pieces of the Haçienda nightclub in Manchester, England. The Haçienda became famous during the rave scene in the late 1980s and early 1990s, during which time it was primarily funded by the band New Order and their label Factory Records. After escalating debts, it lost its licence in June 1997 and was demolished in 2002. When this happened, the club's maple dance floor was mostly scrapped. However, some pieces were salvaged by a band that rehearsed upstairs in the same building, who stored them in a garden shed. In 2010, the publisher of The Haçienda: How Not to Run a Club, written by New Order co-founder and bassist Peter Hook, suggested putting pieces of the floor with special-edition versions of the book. So music archivist Chris Hewitt - who has worked with Hook on and off for the last 40 years - tracked down the salvaged maple dance floor pieces. While he examined and cut pieces for the publishers, it occurred to him that they could also be used to create the neck maple fretboard on guitars. After discussing the idea with Hook, Hewitt commissioned custom guitar builder Brian Eastwood to create 10 bass guitars with maple fretboard from the pieces. The instrument comprises a headstock formed into the shape of the Haçienda dancefloor; a neck with fretboard made from the maple dance floor; and a yellow-and-black striped body, representing the Ben Kelly designed nightclub's iconic chevrons. Metal checker plate pieces the same as the nightclub's staircases decorate the headstock and back of the body. This particular guitar also has a piece of the original granite bar top mounted into the body. Additionally, what are normally f-holes on a hollow body guitar have been changed to "5" and "1" shaped holes, representing FAC 51, the catalogue number issued to the Haçienda by Factory Records. The guitar comes in a protective flight case with a black faux-fur lining, and the neck exhibits markings from its time as part of a dance floor. This lot comes from the personal collection of Chris Hewitt, noted audio archaeologist and author of several books on vintage sound equipment. A letter from him is included. Dimensions (guitar): 120 cm x 40.5 cm x 7 cm (47 1/4" x 16" x 2 3/4")Contains electronics; see electronics notice in the Buyer's Guide. OASIS - Noel Gallagher's 1962 Epiphone Casino GuitarA 1962 Epiphone Casino guitar used and owned by Noel Gallagher during his time in the iconic British band Oasis. Gallagher obtained this Epiphone Casino guitar in 1995 after being advised to do so by The Jam's Paul Weller. The guitar was initially advertised in a local newspaper, and Gallagher went to the seller's house to personally collect it. It was played on various recordings circa 1996-97, including Oasis' third album, Be Here Now and demos of songs for the band's fourth album, Standing on the Shoulder of Giants. The guitar can also be seen held by guitarist Bonehead in a couple of images taken by acclaimed rock photographer Jill Furmanovsky during the recording sessions of Be Here Now. These images feature in her book Was There Then: Oasis: A Photographic Journey. In 1999, Noel's guitar tech Jason Rhodes was instructed to clear out some of his possessions, including several guitars. The instruments were sold through Rick Zsigmond of the New Kings Road Vintage Guitar Emporium. Rhodes incorrectly referred to this guitar as a "USA '63" in an issue of The Guitar Magazine and also referred to the guitar as "a beautiful specimen". The 1962 Epiphone Casino comprises a vintage sunburst-finish maple body with two black pickups (a component specifically used on the 1962 model), nickel hardware and a mahogany neck decorated with mother-of-pearl inlays. Two volume knobs, two tone knobs and a selector switch are located on the body's right side. The serial number 99322 is located on the rear of the headstock. The previous owner added a white-coloured pickguard that was not on the guitar during its time in Noel's possession. It can easily be removed from the instrument. The guitar comes with a black leather protective case lined in light blue velvet, and "Oasis" is stencilled in white on the exterior. There are signs of light wear on the headstock edges and scuffing on the leather. The lot is accompanied by a letter of authenticity signed by Rhodes, an original receipt listing several of the guitars from Gallagher's collection, a newspaper article detailing the sale of Gallagher's guitars, a handwritten letter from the original owner addressed to Gallagher, a copy of Guitarist magazine and a copy of Was There Then: Oasis: A Photographic Journey by Jill Furmanovsky and Daniela Soave. Dimensions (guitar): 104 cm x 41 cm x 7 cm (41" x 16 1/4" x 2 3/4")Contains electronics; see electronics notice in the Buyer's Guide.Additional Provenance:The guitar is mentioned as one of the newest additions to Noel's collection on page 49 of The Guitar Magazine Vol. 6, No. 8. It is incorrectly referred to as a "USA '63". A copy of the magazine is included in the lot. Estimate: £30,000 - 50,000 †ΔThis lot will be auctioned on Friday, November 4th. MUMMY, THE (1999) - Functional Hero Golden Book of the LivingA functional hero Golden Book of the Living from Stephen Sommers' action adventure The Mummy. The Golden Book of the Living was one of two prominent Ancient Egyptian artefacts to feature in the film, the other being the Book of the Dead. Also known as the Golden Book of Amun-Ra, it was discovered under a statue of Horus in Hamunaptra by Rick O'Connell (Brendan Fraser), Jonathan Carnahan (John Hannah) and Ardeth Bay (Oded Fehr), and was later used by Jonathan and Evelyn (Rachel Weisz) to make the nefarious Imhotep (Arnold Vosloo) mortal. The heavy book is primarily made of resin finished in gold paint to resemble solid gold, and features several intentionally tarnished bronze components. Intricately decorated, the front cover features sporadic curved lines, an Egyptian hieroglyph insignia on the left side, and raised scarab beetle emblems. It also features a large moving, circular resin lock section, which is finished in shades of faux bronze and displays an embedded sun-shaped emblem, where a key would have been inserted. The book's embellished metal spine displays 12 individual strands attached to each internal page. Designed to hold the front cover in place, four metal vulture-like clasps are inserted into the scarab emblems and are adjoined to uniquely designed hinges. Located within the book are 12 resin tablet pages covered in ornate hieroglyph detailing. To open the book, the circular mechanical emblem on the cover must be twisted in an anticlockwise direction, which causes the two clasps on the right side to pop up. To close the book, the two clasps should be pushed down into their corresponding slots and held. The emblem should then be turned clockwise, causing the locks to fix back into place.Intentionally distressed for the production, there are some small chips on the cover. Dimensions: 37 cm x 37 cm x 12 cm (14 1/2" x 14 1/2" x 4 3/4")Contains mechanical components; see mechanical notice in the Buyer's Guide.
