Attributed to Cesare Roccheggiani (Italian, active second half 19th century): A late 19th century topographical micromosaic tondo panel depicting a view of St Peters Squarecirca 1880showing the Basilica in Rome, a number of paired figures to the middle and foreground, set within a canted moulded black marble border, the rear with an applied circular manufacturers label and a further ink written label inscribed St Peters Square, Rome, set within a square gilt gesso and carved wood square frame, with egg and dart outer edge, fluted middle edge with leafy corners and stiff leaf border to the inner edge with plain corners, the panel, 19cm diameter, the frame, 31.5cm x 31.5cm x 7cm overallFootnotes:As a member of a well-known family dynasty of master mosaicists, Cesare Roccheggiani had a reputation as one of the most accomplished artists in the city of Rome in the second half of the 19th century. Probably related to Lorenzo Roccheggiani, a late 18th century mosaicist at the Vatican workshop, whose work included the altarpiece, Crucifixion of St. Peter after Guido Reni, he may have also been related to Nicolo Roccheggiani, who was most likely Lorenzo's son who was also another principle artist at the Vatican although at a slightly later date.Previously thought to have been active in the Vatican Mosaic Workshop in the period 1856 to 1864, little was known of the Ceasre Roccheggiani before he established his own independent atelier, first at 125 via Babuino and then by 1874 at 14-15 Via Condotti near the Piazza di Spagna. However, more recent research and examination of Roccheggiani's mosaics suggest that the artist and craftsman may have worked in the atelier of Michelangelo Barberi given that he was strongly influenced by Barberi's style of work and in some cases directly copied some of his own compositions (the famous 'Rome by Night and Day' being one of these works). After Barberi's death in 1867, his studio continued under the direction of his daughter, Isabella Barberi but was last listed in 1873 which coincidently is actually the year before Roccheggiani first opened his own business. In the mid-19th century there were nearly one hundred mosaicists operating in Rome, many from small workshops with the majority of their output manufactured solely for the burgeoning tourist trade. However, the diverse range of pieces produced in large quantities were generally of a small scale comprising small plaques, miniatures and cameos. By comparison the very best studios such as Cesare Roccheggiani's usually produced more substantial or finer micro mosaics in much smaller quantities. These magnificent and costly works however remained the preserve of the rich and powerful and many of the works, often produced by the Vatican workshop were either gifted by visiting aristocrats, given as diplomatic gifts, commissioned by monarchs or displayed at the major international exhibitions such as the Great Exhibition of 1851.A contemporary photograph of Roccheggiani's shop front illustrates the extensive range of mosaics that his company offered and a guide book to Rome lists him as a supplier of mosaic pictures, tables, cabinets, paper weights and gold ornaments (Murray, 1899, p. 22). Of these works, his table-tops and large-scale pictures were perhaps the most expensive pieces and were acquired by wealthy and prestigious clients and displayed at the international exhibitions which were very much a feature of the late 19th century. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Hardy (Thomas).- Lea (Hermann) A fine group of 39 original photographic portraits of Thomas Hardy and 3 portrait postcards by Lea, many inscribed in pencil on verso in Lea's or others' hand, a few with comments by Hardy himself, varying condition, Dorset, v.s., [c.1905-12].⁂ Portrait studies of Hardy by his friend and collaborator Hermann Lea, at least some of which were to be considered by them both as to suitability for publication. In one group of 9 images in their original envelope and endorsed in pencil by Lea (all of which are faded but still clearly show Hardy), Lea has commented on a series lettered A-F (A missing) and Hardy has added additional comments beneath: e.g. "This is spoilt by the location - due to the direct sunlight. H.L." and "Next Best to A. Why not try another like this?" in Hardy's hand. Some are just head and shoulders studies, others show him seated in his library with books around him. One is inscribed by Lea in pen on verso, "Frontispiece Little Guide Book" [A Handbook of the Wessex Country of Thomas Hardy, 1905].
Hardy (Thomas).- Lea (Hermann) Important collection of c.259 original photographs of 'Wessex scenes', some window-mounted on paper or card, all identifying the location (and in some cases the novel in which it appeared) either with pen or pencil inscriptions on verso or on mounts, many in Lea's hand, one in Hardy's hand, some with instructions to publisher/printer about sizing, place in book, titling etc., mostly good condition, some faded, Dorset, v.s., [c.1900-12].⁂ Hermann Lea (1869-1954) befriended Hardy in 1898 and they became close friends and travelling companions. As a photographer and author, Lea accompanied Hardy on extensive and thorough tours of Wessex - mostly comprising their native Dorset but also as far afield as Bath or Oxford - the region where Hardy based all his major works of fiction, taking numerous photographs of the places which Hardy himself would identify as being mentioned in his various novels. Following the publication of A Handbook to the Wessex Country of Thomas Hardy's Novels and Poems in 1905 Hardy collaborated with Lea in writing Thomas Hardy's Wessex, the study that Macmillan published in 1913, profusely illustrated with Lea's own photographs, as an integral part of the Wessex edition of Hardy's works. It was the guide, with the approbatur and imprimatur of Hardy himself. The photographs in this and the following 3 lots all come directly from Lea's own collection and represent those images used in or deemed not suitable or surplus to requirements for Thomas Hardy's Wessex. On his tours with Hardy Lea regularly took multiple photographs of a location and then, when the negatives were developed, selected the best image for reproduction. Lea used a "remarkable camera - the home-made super-zoom which finally could capture Hardy's long-lens vision of his emptied landscapes" (Rattenbury). After Lea's death, James Stevens-Cox visited his widow and bought the entire remaining archive of her husband's photographs. Many of the identifying pencil inscriptions on the verso of the photographs are in JSC's hand. Some places are more fully represented than others - Dorchester, for example, has 20 images, including one with the pencil inscription by Hardy on verso "Good as a photograph (+ might be substituted for West Walk if that should fail) T.H." Other locations include Charborough (16), Corfe (8), Evershot (7), Poole (7), Portland (10), Puddletown (15), Salisbury (9), Sherborne (10).There are a few Lea photographs in the Dorset County Museum but otherwise Lea photographs are virtually unrepresented in public collections.Literature: Kester Rattenbury's The Wessex Project: Thomas Hardy, Architect: Part III, January 2023.

BAXTER, Richard. 'The Saints Everlasting Rest: Or, Treatise of the Blessed State of the Saints in their enjoyment of God and Glory,' The second edition enlarged, in four parts with three title pages to parts I, III and IV, pagination corresponding to title pages, repair to first title page with contemporary ink notes to verso, full speckled calf, rebacked, some toning and light notes to margins, head and tailpieces, generally good to very good, Thomas Underhill and Francis Tyton, London, 1651.Richard Baxter's "The Saints' Everlasting Rest" is a spiritual guide that encourages Christians to focus on their eternal destiny in heaven. The book begins by highlighting the transient nature of life on Earth, emphasizing the need to prepare for the afterlife. Baxter asserts that heaven is the ultimate reward for faithful believers and provides an elaborate description of the joys and bliss that await them there. His work has had a profound impact on Christian thought and continues to inspire readers to seek a closer relationship with God and anticipate the eternal joy of heaven. A good copy of this devotional classic, written by the 17th-century English Puritan theologian and pastor.
(Occultism) CROWLEY, Aleister. 'Magick. In Theory and Practice By The Master Therion,' Original red cloth, slight sun bleaching to spine but otherwise vg, pp.436, vg text block with some very light finger soiling and graphite underlining, published for subscribers only, the Lecram Press, Paris, 1929.This seminal work is a comprehensive guide to the philosophy and practice of ceremonial magick; drawing from various esoteric traditions. Crowley seeks to demystify magick and provide practical instructions for its application, all while advocating for a scientific and rational approach to the occult. There were several variant issues of the first hardbound edition. 'Magick' was originally issued in four parts; each in paper wrappers with an additional colour plate. However, he was dissatisfied with this design and had the plate removed, a new title page prepared, and most copies dis-bound and sent to Britain. They were then rebound in a durable cloth or buckram to make this; the 'Subscriber's Edition'. Although the title page has the date of 1929, the book did not actually appear until 1930, of which this is a very good copy. Scarce.

Belonged to Ian ‘Spike’ Sykes was born and raised in Leeds during the Second World War. A climber since his youth, he joined the RAF at sixteen, working on the Kinloss Mountain Rescue Team in the Scottish Highlands during a number of dramatic rescues. After leaving the RAF he worked with the British Antarctic Survey on the southern polar ice cap, where he ran a dog team and worked as a guide for the Survey’s field scientists. Back in Scotland, Spike and Ian Sutherland identified an opportunity for a climbing and outdoor equipment shop in the Highlands, and the first Nevisport shop was born. Both remained as members of the Lochaber Mountain Rescue, the UK’s busiest team. Spike was also instrumental in the development of the ski area at Nevis Range on Aonach Mor, where he stayed on as managing director for twelve years. He is currently a director of Nevis Range, which is now also internationally renowned as a mountain biking centre. Spike was awarded an MBE in 1990 for services to sport and mountain rescue, and in 2011 he received the Scottish Award for Excellence in Mountain Culture. His first book, Cry Argentina (978-1-846248-71-9), a semi-fictional account of the build-up to the invasion of South Georgia in the Falklands War, was published in 2013. In the Shadow of Ben Nevis is his second book. Spike lives in Fort William with his partner Gay, and has a daughter Eilidh. The below letter from 'Spike' regarding his watch."I joined British Antarctic Survey in Autumn 1967 as a GA, effectively as a guide for scientists working on the Antarctic continent. I was 25 and had been in the RAF and an instructor in Outward Bound. I sailed from Southampton on the RRS Shackleton and arrived in Port Stanley in the Falkland Islands a month later. We were paid the princely sum of £500 a year, because for the next two and a half years I was to be in Antarctica my pay went directly into an account that accrued accordingly. It was an easy way for a young man to bank a couple of thousand pounds in less than three years, a princely sum in those days.I bought my Rolex Watch in Binnie’s General Store in Port Stanley, this was many years before the Falkland War and Stanley was a Tax-free Port. I then sailed on to my base, Stonington Island, about halfway down the west coast of the Antarctic Peninsula, where I picked up my dog team and spent the next two and a half very exciting years. The Rolex Explorer chronometer was the best watch I could afford at the time. It was long before the days of digital watches and has been dead accurate ever since the day I bought it."
