The Man of Pleasure's Illustrated Pocket-Book for 1850: A Complete and Gentlemanly Night Guide, London: Wm Ward's Bachelor's Repository of Arts [1850]. The book describes individual prostitutes using coded language (making use of equestrian and seafaring references). 'Miss Murray' (Foley Place, Oxford Street, 3rd on the left) is described as a 'little frigate' fit for a king to board. 'Miss Fowler' is described as having beautiful legs, 'when stepping into a cab or coach, she makes the most of her leg; and in an omnibus she generally sets fire to all the male passengers, so that you see them fidgeting and adjusting their rebellious members the remainder of the journey'. 'Miss A. Parks' is noted for her "singing" when she 'visits the side-boxes', 'In duets she employs her tongue and voice full as satisfactory as when it emits the shrillest note. She performs her part with admirable skill and dexterity, and in such cases chooses the lowest part'. 'Miss Alice Grey' is 'frequently mounted a la militaire, and as frequently performs the rites of the love-inspiring queen according to the equestrian order, in which style she is said to afford uncommon delight'. The book includes a 'Flash Dictionary' (guide to London criminal slang), with words such as 'Backgammon' (sodomy); 'Clickman Toad' (a nightwatchman); 'Drawing a Wiper' (stealing a handkerchief); 'Fiery Snorter' (a red nose); 'Potato Trap' (a mouth). The book features a list of prescriptions for (and descriptions of) sexually transmitted diseases. Engraved pictorial title page and frontispiece, numerous wood-engraved illustrations and plates, including portraits of some of the prostitutes. Cox (Morris). March Demon, A Collage Novel, author's original 'manuscript' copy, London, 1938, [12], 232 leaves, the title-page and text a collage cut up from ten 19th-century works, the composite text pasted centrally to recto of each hand-numbered leaf, occasional use of whitener, versos blank, original canvas-covered boards with two screwed spine pegs, the two covers hand-coloured by Cox in a magic square design, small typed label to upper cover, 4to (26 x 20 cm) (Qty: 1)NOTESProvenance: Alan Tucker, from the author. From the Library of Alan and Joan Tucker, Stroud, Gloucestershire. A typed note on the leaf following the title-page explains: 'This collage is altogether made up of the following short and (most likely) forgotten works'. The following eight leaves have the title-pages of the eight works from which Cox composed this work: 1) The Maiden Monarch; Or, Island Queen , vol. 1, R. Hastings, 1840; 2) The Tell-Tale: An Original Collection of Moral and Amusing Stories , Harris and Son, 1823; 3) Louisa Featherington, and Other Tales , Religious Tract Society, [1866]; 4) The Child's Guide to Knowledge; Being a Collection of Useful and Familiar Questions and Answers on Every-Day Subjects... , by a Lady, 48th edition, Simpkin, Marshall, & Co., 1874 5) The Girls' Reading-Book or Chapters on Home Work and Duties by Mrs Henry Sandford, W. & R. Chambers, 1877; 6) A Guide to the Knowledge of Life, Vegetable and Animal... , by Robert James Mann, 3rd edition, Jarrold & Sons, circa 1860s; 7) The World's Birthday. A Book for the Young by Professor L. Gaussen, T. Nelson, 1865; 8) Model Lessons for Infant School Teachers and Nursery Governesses, Prepared for the Home and Colonial Infant School Society, by the Author of 'Lessons on Objects' , R.B. Seeley and W. Burnside, 1838. According to Alan Tucker all the books were bought for a few pence on Faringdon Road or at chapel fetes. 'Note the seventh title devoted to the Sabbath, the 8th to objects. Why eight books? Maybe an arbitrary number, though the first title is out of character with the rest, and probably indicates Victoria, eight letters to her name, still a maiden in Vol. 1. Solomon of course was born (and buried) on a Monday. On the last page the hero gets married and imagines he's arrived in heaven.' Cox's inspiration for collage came from Kurt Schwitters and Max Ernst and was submitted to Faber who rejected it 'just as they were about to publish (with some misgivings) Finnegans Wake . Cox used to say Faber turned him down from a natural reaction to [James] Joyce: Enough already. They have taken one chance and were not in the mood to promote another uncommercial book, particularly from a totally unknown writer' (Alan Tucker, 'Finnegans Wake and March Demon: A collage text by Morris Cox', flashpointmag.com, 28 July 2009. Cox gave this book to Alan Tucker and later borrowed it back to issue in his Gogmagog Photocopy Library (1984), Franklin 46.

BADEN-POWELL ROBERT: (1857-1941) British Lieutenant General who, in 1899 during the Second Boer War in South Africa, successfully defended the city in the Siege of Mafeking. Later Baden-Powell founded the Scout Movement. Autograph Manuscript signed, with his initials BP, three pages, 8vo, Waiho Gorge, Westland, New Zealand, n.d. (1934), in pencil, on the printed stationery of the Glacier Hotel at the Franz Josef Glacier. Baden-Powell's manuscript, with several corrections throughout, is entitled On a Glacier and states, in part, 'As I write this I am sitting on a bluff on the shoulder of one of the great mountains which rear their snowclad heads high above me on every side. In front and below me runs a wide valley which is filled from side to side with a vast white sheet of ice; not the sort of ice you know at home but a jumbled mess of blocks and waves and walls of ice. It is a glacier, or frozen stream, a mile wide and twelve miles long from where it starts…..I can see three tiny moving specks some two miles away on the glacier. These are my two daughters mountain climbing with their guide. Dressed in breeches and puttees and heavy iron-shod climbing boots and armed with ice axes for cutting steps in the ice and with goggles to escape the glare of the snow, they love the excitement of clambering over those great slippery crags…..As for me I am taking it easy, sitting on my bluff and gazing over this mighty frozen torrent. There is a steady rumbling hum in the air, just like the roar of the traffic in London as you hear it sitting in Hyde Park. This rumbling is the sound made by that vast mass of ice slowly, slowly grinding its way over the rocks and stones beneath it. Watching it and standing on it you can perceive no movement, but moving it is all the same…..It behaves just as a stream of water does in running down a steep water course, the difference being that it is all a solid block of ice….'  The final page is lightly and neatly laid down to a page most likely removed from a scrapbook and the first two pages are neatly laid down to the left edges alongside. Some very light, extremely minor age wear, about VG   The present manuscript was most likely written in preparation for Baden-Powell's book Scouting Round the World (1935) which records the Chief Scout's round-the-world voyage undertaken in 1934 in the company of his wife, Olave Baden-Powell, and their two daughters. The book features a description of his observations as his daughters climb the Franz Josef Glacier.
