A Franco-Flemish tapestry fragment, Late 16th / early 17th century, Depicting the Old Testament story of Tobias and the Archangel Raphael leaving Tobit and Anna, possibly cut and re-joined with verdure end panels, within a bead-and-reel border, later mounted, 51 x 151.5cm Condition Report: Note: This scene is from the Old Testament story of the Archangel Raphael and Tobias from the Book of Tobit. After his father Tobit goes blind and the family are running out of money, Tobias is sent to Media in Persia to collect money Tobias had lent to a friend twenty years previously. When Tobias can’t find anyone to accompany him on the journey, the Archangel Raphael appears in disguise and agrees to guide him. They set out on their journey with Tobias’ dog Hera, and while crossing a river Tobias kills a fish and is instructed by the angel to keep its eyes and entrails in a metal box. On arrival in Media, he meets and weds Sara, who is being plagued by a demon who has vowed to kill any man she marries. By burning the entrails of the fish, he destroys the demon and on their return to his parents and using the crushing the eyes into an ointment and applies them to Tobit's eyes, curing this blindness. Upon opening his eyes, Tobit realises that his son's travelling companion was in fact an angel. This panel depicts the scene when Raphael and Tobias are leaving his parent’s house for their journey to Media, with Tobit and a tearful Anna seeing them off and the dog Hera standing by their feet.

Born in Bishop Auckland, Durham, Greville's early years were shaped by his parents, Dorothy and Robert Greville, the latter being the rector of the parish church in Edlaston, Derbyshire. His childhood fascination with natural history evolved into a lifelong commitment, although his path initially led him to the study of medicine. However, realizing that his passion for botany outweighed the pursuit of a medical career, Greville made a bold decision to abandon four years of medical education in London and Edinburgh, focusing instead on his true calling. In 1816, Greville married Charlotte Eden, the niece of William Eden, 1st Baron Auckland. Greville's dedication to botany became more apparent in 1823 when he embarked on the ambitious project of illustrating and publishing the "Scottish Cryptogamic Flora." This monumental work was released in monthly parts and aimed to complement the catalog of flora found in Smith and Sowerby's "English Botany." Greville meticulously drew each specimen himself, accompanied by detailed text, creating a comprehensive depiction of the Scottish cryptogamic flora during the early 19th century. The following year, in 1824, Greville expanded his botanical contributions with the publication of "Flora Edinensis," a guide to the flora of Edinburgh. His dedication and scholarly contributions did not go unnoticed, as evidenced by the University of Glasgow awarding him a doctorate in 1826. Greville's influence extended beyond publications; he delivered numerous lectures in the natural sciences and amassed collections that were later acquired by the University of Edinburgh, preserving his specimens of plants and fungi in the Herbarium of the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh. Notable among Greville's adventures was a boat trip to the Isle of May in late 1826 or early 1827, accompanied by students William Ainsworth and Charles Darwin. Despite his eminence as a cryptogamist, Greville's contagious laughter at seabirds led him to lie down on the greensward, creating a memorable moment for his companions. In 1828, Greville received a significant honor when Mount Greville in Queensland was named in his honor by fellow botanist Allan Cunningham. This mountain, now part of Moogerah Peaks National Park, stands as a testament to Greville's global impact on botany. Beyond his botanical pursuits, Greville showcased his diverse interests. In 1835, he published piano music for a sacred melody, and in 1839–40, he served as president of the Botanical Society of Edinburgh for the first time. Greville's engagement in political causes, such as abolitionism, capital punishment, Sunday observance, and the temperance movement, reflected his commitment to social issues. In 1840, Greville played a key role as one of the vice-presidents at the World's Anti-Slavery Convention in London, illustrating his dedication to humanitarian causes. His involvement in various learned societies, including the Biological Society and the Royal Society of Edinburgh, showcased his standing as a respected figure in the scientific community. Greville's impact extended internationally, as he held honorary memberships in the Royal Irish Academy and the Howard Society, along with corresponding memberships in natural history societies in Brussels, Paris, Leipzig, and Philadelphia. Notably, he served as the secretary of the Sabbath Alliance and contributed to the compilation of the Church of England's 1838 hymn book. Towards the end of his life, Greville faced financial challenges, prompting him to transition to professional artistry, creating landscape paintings that were exhibited. Despite financial hardships, he remained dedicated to his botanical work. In 1865–66, Greville served as President of the Botanical Society of Edinburgh for the second and final time. He continued to be actively involved in his research until his passing on June 4, 1866, at his home in Murrayfield, Edinburgh. Greville's legacy endures through his contributions to botany, his dedication to social causes, and his impact on the scientific community. His burial in Dean Cemetery in Edinburgh marks the final resting place of a man whose passion for nature and humanity left an everlasting imprint on the world of science and beyond.

On offer from 21 years of cherished ownership with multiple concours wins under its belt. If the RS Cosworth was an homologation car, the RS500 was an evolution special. Once Ford had built the requisite 5,000 RS Cosworths, 'Group A' rules allowed an upgraded 'evolution' model to be launched. This could carry changes focused on improving its racing potential, provided Ford sold 10% of the original number as road cars, hence the 500, with the vast majority (392) being finished in Black, 56 in Diamond White and 52 in Moonstone Blue. All RS500s had modified bodywork and the cachet of being hand-assembled. Indeed, during the model's 30th Anniversary year in 2017, the RS500 was named the 'Ultimate Cosworth' by one of the UK's biggest one-make car shows.The car presented here is the 1987 Ford Sierra RS500 Cosworth, #433, finished in Diamond White and despatched from Tickfords on 6th August 1987 to Bristol Street Motors of Cheltenham. It was immediately registered by its first keeper as E100 GFH, before becoming the totally appropriate E433 COS during our vendor’s ownership.The condition of the car is truly remarkable. Iconic Auctioneers (formerly Silverstone Auctions) has been fortunate enough to bring over 30 RS500s to market, and this is undeniably one of, if not the, best of all. The paintwork is immaculate, with no evidence of having been touched over the years, appearing to be all original. On offer from single-family ownership, this exceptionally original XJ-S V12 Convertible has covered a mere 11,560 miles from new. The XJ-S Convertible, which first appeared in 1988 at a price of £36,000, was considerably more than merely a coupé with the roof removed. The earlier ''T'-top' Cabriolet paved the way as the first open Jaguar since the departure of the E-Type in 1975, but this was to be the first full convertible and a strengthened sub-frame was employed in order to alleviate scuttle shake. It looked superb and elegant with the hood erect or folded and finally met the demands of the highly valued North American market. Retaining the roomy cockpit space of the coupé, the new convertible boasted a useful shelf for extra luggage and all the expected Jaguar refinements as standard. The XJ-S' superb 5.3-litre V12 developed some 295bhp in later fuel-injected form and even when allied to an automatic transmission, the car was capable of a genuine 150mph and made for a fine open-top 'Grand Touring' car.This wonderful time warp example was originally supplied to a local gentleman by Jaguar Daimler dealer, Hartwell’s of Oxford, in August of 1989 finished in Signal Red with a Magnolia leather interior. In superbly original condition, just 25,000 miles, with full service history and from 32-years ownership. In 1986, the original Sierra Cosworth was a new kind of performance car - a blue-collar hero able to humble true sports cars. In 1988, Ford introduced the Sierra Sapphire RS Cosworth, a more ‘discreet’ version, built using the four-door Sapphire bodyshell, first with the same rear-wheel drive layout as the three-door original, and then later with four-wheel drive; but even with a more restrained exterior, a plush velour interior and an executive four-door shell, the Sapphire was far from dull. The early rear-wheel drive cars had 204bhp from the YBB engine (205 block), a T5 gearbox, 7" x 15" lattice alloy wheels, front and rear spoilers, side skirts and Recaro seats. The rear-wheel drive cars could hit 60mph in 6.1 seconds. Despite the extra power and potential for greater traction, the later 4x4 Sapphire was slower to 60mph, reaching the speed in 6.6 secs. Approximately 13,140 2WD Sapphire examples were produced during 1988-1989; all were assembled in Ghenk, Belgium, with UK-built Ford-Cosworth engines.The car presented here is a 1989 Ford Sierra Sapphire RS Cosworth (2WD) and is in super original, unmolested condition. Musuros’ handwriting reportedly formed the model of Aldus’ Greek type. Musurus here brings together 26 Greek authors including letters by Plato and the first printing of any of his writings in the original Greek as well Isocrates, Aeschines, Synesius, Aristotle, Alexander the Great, St. Basil, Phalaridis Tyranni, Bruti Romani, Apollonius of Tyana, and Julian Apostate. The Aldine Epistolae Graecae ‘was not replaced by an equally useful collection until 1873, the date of R. Hercher’s Epistolographi graeci’ (Wilson, Byzantium to Italy, p.150).The book is printed in Aldus’s second and better Greek type (2:114), designed by Francesco Griffo da Bologna. Letter-writing was an art and study allied to rhetoric which formed part of a humanistic education, and compendia of letters circulated as model precedents. The letters published in this volume however are of interest far beyond mere examples of letter-writing. An example is Plato’s seventh letter, the longest and most important. It is addressed to the associates and companions of Dion, most likely after his assassination in 353 BCE, in the form of an open letter, and contains a defence of Plato’s political activities in Syracuse as well as a long digression concerning the nature of philosophy, the theory of the forms, and the problems inherent to teaching. Toward the end of the letter he gives an explanation of the perfect circle as an existing, unchanging, and eternal form, and explains how any reproduction of a circle is impossible. He suggests that the form of a perfect circle cannot even be discussed, because language and definition are inadequate. This important edition was hightly influential; Copernicus taught himself Greek using this work with the help of a Greek-Latin dictionary; the manuscript of his De Revolutionibus contains a suppressed passage from Lysis’s letter to Hipparchus found in this collection. Introducing the text of the letter Copernicus mentions 'Philolaus believed in the earth’s motion.. (and) Aristarchus of Samos too held the same view'.

All the bikes had a custom paint job by British specialist Joe Blacks ‘8BALL’ and comes with the factory belly pan, fly screen and seat cowl, all colour matched to the overall paint scheme. The seat covering is half Alcantara with red stitching. Condition – a very low mileage bike showing under 4,000 miles. It was last serviced and MOT’d by a Triumph main dealer on the 14th August 2023 and said by the owner to be in very good condition throughout, with everything working correctly. 249. 1958 ARIEL VB 600cc Registration - 309 DBB Engine No - CAMC 1072 Frame No - CAPR 9817 The last of the VB 600s was said to be the best looking of the lot. The combination of the modern fuel tank, the swinging arm rear suspension, the burgundy paintwork and the seat colour all helped to make the bike look up-to-date and appeal to the younger market. The strong torquey engine also made it ideal to pull a sidecar at weekends for a family outing. The last VB was dispatched from the factory on the 25/4/1959. Condition - This bike was dispatched from the factory on the 3/9/1957 and first registered in February 1958. It was one of only 270 made in 1958. Unfortunately, due to knee surgery the owner has not been able to ride the bike for the last 12 months prior to which it was used regularly and is fairly described by the owner as being in average, used condition that was, when last used riding nicely with everything working as it should.
