* Ransome (Arthur, 1884-1967). A group of 5 Autograph Letters Signed and 9 Typed Letters Signed, 'Arthur Ransome', various places, 11 February 1953 to 4 September 1955, all to Morley Kennerley [of Faber & Faber], concerning fishing books and related including Ransome's idea to reprint a series of old fishing books, 'Here's the anthology back. Thanks for letting me see it. I have been through it and noted several possible candidates. Now then: those diaries:- I should like to look at them, though I dread adding to the pile of the last year's arrears due to my having been so often and for so long out of action' (11 February 1953); 'I have made several deep dives into that vast bag, and found a great deal of interest. I think the owner knowing all the people mentioned, should make a selection from all the diaries, from start to finish, thus making it the record of a whole fishing life... ' (3 June 1953); 'Here is a copy I made of the letter written by James Leisenring to G. E. M. Sques. I wish you would read it and see if you think as highly of it as I do. I go to the Itchen tomorrow (to catch cold and no grayling)' (28 November 1954); 'Smythe. I have been wasting a lot of time doing a job for the National Book League, producing their new "Reader's Guide" to Fishing books. In it, I have taken the chance of calling attention to the Smythe diary, quoting a sentence from it and saying that it "has been edited by his son and is shortly to be published"...' (19 February 1955); 'Of course Smythe must have his Fishing Gazette stuff if he wants it, even though it is poor beside the Provost's genuine diary' (25 May 1955); ‘Here is H. A. Morritt’s farewell book … Anyhow, I shall be most grateful to you if you will consider adding this to your growing list of really good fishing books. You might follow it up with other very short but very good books, such as a reprint of John Beever (1849), or The Northern Angler (1800), etc.’ (13 August 1955); ‘I think your idea of a series of reprints of all the smaller fishing classics is a very good one. All the best fishing books were written in the days when no one thought it necessary to inflate them. Such a series would allow the inclusion of such books as Morritt’s, and all the books would help each other. In the end the series would offer safe bets to mothers and wives wanting to give presents to sons and husbands. You might lead off with Beever for the fly-fishers and balance him with Nobbes (1682) on the pike. Two days ago by pure accident I came across the only copy I’ve ever seen of John Beever’s first edition of 1849… a small paper-bound of 64 pages… Blurb for Smythe. Do send me the proofs. I could send the blurb by return of post if only I had the proofs. If you have no proofs, let me know and I will, with greater difficulty, write an inferior blurb’ (19 August 1955), a few marks and filing pin holes, etc., a total of 16 pages, 4to/8vo, plus an Autograph Postcard Signed, 3 sheets of proof notes and a collection of 30 related carbon copies of correspondence from Kennerley to Ransome on the same subjectsQTY: (a folder)

The Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy 4, 1st edition, London: Pan Books, 1984, author's signed presentation inscription in blue ballpoint pen to title, 'To Nicky, Best wishes, Douglas Adams', original cloth in dust jacket with holographic onlay to upper cover, slightly rubbed, together with first editions of Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency, The Deeper Meaning of Liff, The Salmon of Doubt, 3 Douglas Adams omnibus editions, 3 Book Club editions and a paperback, all but the last original cloth in dust jackets, a little rubbed, 8voQTY: (11)
dating: 1861 provenance: USA, 6-1/2', round, 36 cal. barrel (some pitting inside, visible rifling), marked 'ADDRESS COL SAM.L COLT NEW-YORK US AMERICA' on the back. Barrel wedge with numbering matching with the other parts. Rebated, five-shot cylinder with remains of stagecoach scene; legible patent and serial number matching the frame. Working mechanism. Frame with serial number '2xx', traces of the same serial number at the base of the barrel and clearly visible and matching numbering on the grip straps. These both made of brass. Pin of the cylinder without numbers, 'B' mark inside. Iron surfaces with signs of use, time and pitting. Trigger guard marked '36 CAL'. Walnut grip. A production of under 22,000 specimens, many of them converted (or already designed) to metal cartridges. Ours is one of the rare muzzle-loading specimens. See Flayderman's Guide, 9th Edition, p. 96. 5B-108. See also 'The Book of Colt Firearms' by R.L. Wilson, Blue Book Publications, MN. Pg. 175. length 29,5 cm.
dating: 1858 provenance: USA, Cylindrical, 7-1/2', 44 cal. barrel (some scaling and pitting inside, clearly visible rifling) with octagonal base, silver-coloured semi-circular foresight, the back mark is missing. With rear sight featuring adjustable sight leaf on the back, near the breech. The cartridge rammer with partial four-digit serial number matching the barrel. The barrel wedge is not numbered. Smooth, six-shot cylinder with rectangular notches, without marks or decorations (substituted? two slightly deformed chambers). Working mechanism. Frame marked 'COLTS PATENT' and 'U.S.' with serial number '16xxx' matching the barrel; central pin of the cylinder without numbers. Brass lower band and rounded trigger guard with serial number matching the frame, also with the mark 'L'. Iron back band with matching serial number under the grip. Provided with clutches on the sides and slot under the grip to mount a removable butt (not present). Various areas of pitting. Smooth walnut grip without stamps. Despite the third model is the most widely produced, the units provided with clutches for the removable butt were likely limited to around 1,500 units. In our case, it appears to be a revolver for the third model butt, featuring two clutches on either side of the frame and a slot beneath the grip. It's worth noting that many of these models were provided with an iron band. Furthermore, revolvers outfitted with removable butt typically featured a foldaway rear sight, as our specimen. For further information, see 'The Book of Colt Firearms' by R.L. Wilson, Blue Book Publications, MN, pages 91-96. Additionally, consult Flayderman's Guide, 9th Edition, pages 86-87. length 36 cm.
dating: 1850 provenance: USA, 7-1/2', octagonal, rifled, 36 cal. barrel (some pitting inside, clearly visible rifling), with conical foresight, clearly visible mark of the first type (New York City). Barrel wedge, cartridge rammer lever and barrel with serial number matching the frame. Six-shot cylinder with remains of the Texas-Mexico naval battle, more visible patent and serial number (also matching the frame). Well working mechanism. Frame marked 'COLTS PATENT', serial number '21xx'. Pin of the cylinder with matching numbering. Grip with brass bands, numbered en suite. Trigger guard of the first type, with square back. Walnut grip. Some signs of use and time, pitting (good/medium condition). Brass bands with remains of antique silver plating. Second model square-back trigger guard: square trigger guard and screw above the barrel wedge, serial numbers between 1250 and 4200. The serial number shows the first year of production. See 'The Book of Colt Firearms' by R.L. Wilson, Blue Book Publications, MN. Pages 121-132. See also Flayderman's Guide, 9th Edition, pp. 89-90. 5B-051. length 34 cm.
dating: 1849 provenance: USA, Cylindrical, 7-1/2', 44 cal. barrel (signs of use and time inside, visible rifling) with octagonal base, low silver foresight, marked 'ADDRESS SAM.L COLT NEW YORK CITY' in curly brackets, the inscription is oriented towards the nozzle. Cartridge rammer marked '344'. The barrel wedge without numbers. Smooth, six-shot cylinder with oval notches, with remains of engraving depicting a fighting between Texas Rangers and Indians (still quite legible) and cartouches with the inscriptions 'MODEL U.S.M.R' and 'COLT'S PATENT'; remains of serial number, probably '55xx'. Working mechanism. Frame marked 'COLTS PATENT' and 'U.S.' with serial number '55xx' matching the cylinder; the central pin of the cylinder with partial serial number matching the frame, also with 'N' or 'Z' stamps (not clearly legible). Brass lower band and squared trigger guard with four-digit serial number matching the frame, also with marks 'K' and 'G'. Brass back band with matching serial number under the grip. Slight traces of German silver plating on the brass. The barrel with serial number matching the frame. Various areas of pitting. Smooth walnut grip without stamps. The total production of this fascinating model was approximately 7,000 units (around 1341-8000). Although our specimen bears the 'US' marking beneath the Colt patent, it lacks the military stamps on the wooden grip and shows remains of German silver plating (a typical feature of civilian models). As noted by R.L. Wilson, the last two or three digits of the serial number were typically engraved on the cylinder pin, as in our specimen. Reference 'The Book of Colt Firearms' by Blue Book Publications, MN, 1993, pages 85-86 for further details.Additionally, refer to Flayderman's Guide, 9th Edition, pages 84-85, item 5B-023. length 35,5 cm.
dating: 1861 provenance: USA, 7-1/2', round, 44 cal. barrel (heavy pitting inside), with traces of '...RICA-' mark on the back (the rest no longer legible). Rebated and fluted cylinder, with traces of patent mark. Working mechanism. Frame with four screws and cut-outs in the recoil shield for mounting of a removable butt (missing), serial number '38xx', remains of the same serial number at the base of the barrel. Brass trigger guard with matching and clearly visible serial number. Iron back band with remains of matching serial number and a slot for the removable butt at the base of the grip. Iron surfaces with signs of use, time and various pitting. An earliest and rarest production with a low serial number (below 8000), 7-1/2' barrel, and a grooved cylinder. Approximately 4,000 specimens were produced in this variant. Refer to 'The Book of Colt Firearms' by R.L. Wilson, Blue Book Publications, MN, pages 161-166 for detailed information. Additionally, consult Flayderman's Guide, 9th Edition, pages 94-95, item 5B-091. length 33 cm.
dating: 1851 provenance: USA, Cylindrical, 7-1/2', 44 cal. barrel (pitting and scaling inside, visible rifling) with octagonal base, with low German silver foresight, marked 'ADDRESS SAM.L COLT NEW YORK CITY' in curly brackets, the inscription is oriented towards the breech. Smooth, six-shot cylinder with rectangular notches, remains of engraving depicting a fight between Texas Rangers and Indians (not clearly legible) and the cartouches almost completely faded, the serial number is no longer legible. Working mechanism. Frame marked 'COLTS PATENT' and 'U.S.' with serial number '10xxx'. Central pin of the cylinder with serial number matching the frame. Brass lower band and squared trigger guard with serial number matching the frame. Brass back band with matching serial number (probably re-stamped) under the grip. Barrel with serial number matching the frame. The cartridge rammer and the barrel wedge also with matching serial numbers (possibly re-stamped). Various areas of pitting. Smooth walnut grip without stamps. Among the three standard Dragoon models, this variant is the rarest, with only about 2700 units produced (approximately 8000-10700). The frame features the 'US' marking, but no other elements suggest military use. This piece holds significant appeal for Colt percussion revolver collectors. For further information, see 'The Book of Colt Firearms' by R.L. Wilson, Blue Book Publications 1993 MN, pages 88-90.Additionally, refer to Flayderman's Guide, 9th Edition, pages 85-86, item 5B-026. length 35,5 cm.

Frame marked "COLTS PATENT" and Serial number "16xx", cylinder's pin with matching serial number. Brass handle bands with remnants of silvering and matching serial numbers. Small and squared trigger guard with marks "U" and "G". Smooth, walnut handle.
