Ɵ Thomas Aquinas' commentary on Peter Lombard, Sentences, in Latin, decorated manuscript on paper[Italy, dated 23 November 1479]133 leaves (plus a single endleaf of perhaps seventeenth or eighteenth century at end), wanting two leaves at front (probably an endleaf and the opening of the prologue), else complete, collation: i8 (wanting first 2 leaves), ii-vi10, vii8, viii7 (last a cancelled blank, and the leaf before that with all but the initial 14 lines left blank, but text continuous with following page), ix10-xiv10 + a singleton to complete the index, catchwords, double column of 55 lines of a small late gothic bookhand with influence of secretarial letterforms, paragraph marks in red, small initials in red or blue with elongated strokes terminating in baubles, larger initials in same with blank paper patterns of lines and dots left within their bodies, "YHS" and some running titles in hairline penstrokes at head of leaves at end of book, leaves at each end of volume with old water damage causing losses there to edges and some staining (this affecting legibility only on current first leaf, and the last leaf repaired with more modern paper), small holes in first 2 leaves, slight stains to edges throughout, otherwise in clean and bright condition, 338 by 235mm.; seventeenth- or eighteenth-century reversed calf over pasteboards, scuffs and bumps and holes in leather on spine, but solid in binding Provenance:Written by a scribe who dates the book and names "Fratre Ludevico de ..." in the damaged and partly missing colophon on the last leaf, this perhaps his own name. That addition notes that the book originally belonged to a Dominican convent ("Iste liber est conventus sancte L... ordine predicatorum"). Text:Peter Lombard wrote his Sentences, a comprehensive compilation and distillation of medieval theology in the late 1140s as a guide to the study of the Bible and the Church Fathers. It is one of the textual foundation stones of medieval Christianity and philosophical thought. In turn other commentaries were written on it, perhaps the greatest of these being the present work by the Dominican friar and Doctor of the Church, St. Thomas Aquinas (1225-74). He had spent his second and third years of his degree studies at Paris studying the text, and in the 1250s he turned to compose this monumental commentary and augmentation of it. It is widely regarded as his first great work.To view a video of this item, click here.

Later binding (late 16th/early 17th century) of mottled sheep over wooden boards, heavily rubbed, wear and cracking to joint-ends, a few superficial worm-tracks to covers, corners showing through, folio in 8s (28.2 x 20 cm) (Qty: 1)NOTESGoff G-431; GW 11433; Hain-Copinger 7932*; ISTC ig00431000. First Paris edition, and the sixth overall, of one of the most important texts in western medieval Christianity; the first edition is probably that printed in Nuremberg in 1471. The Moralia was unprecedented in its scope and remained the dominant commentary on the Book of Job until the thirteenth century. 'Gregory began writing the commentary around 583, before he became pope in 590, and he completed it within the first year of his papacy. It was a tumultuous time in Rome. Italy was reeling from the wars of Justinian, the Lombards had occupied northern Italy, and floods, plagues, and famines had devastated the country … Clearly the sufferings of that period prompted a desperate need for the exposition of Job by those charged with teaching the Christian faith in such difficult times' (Seow, Job 1-21: Interpretation and Commentary (2013), p. 193).

A Rare Italian Marriage Fan, the leaf combining different needle lace techniques, an armorial of each important family at either side of a finely worked and clearly wealthy lady holding a fixed fan. Likely late 19th century, the leaf is mounted on 18th century ivory sticks, the gorge painted in pastels with flowers and tiny chinoiserie figures. The borders of the leaf are most likely Venetian needlepoint, perhaps worked in the Burano needlework school, and the quality of the lady and the armorials may well indicate a very accomplished lace-maker from Belgium, using a Point de Gaze ground. Guard length 11.25 inches or 28.5cmThe Burano lace school reopened in 1872 after a period of decline, and still exists on the island off Venice todaySee the cover jacket and plate 41 of A Collector's Guide to Fans over the Ages by the late Bertha de Vere Green, a former FCI member, where a similar leaf of Burano needle lace is shown. NB a copy of this book is available to purchase in this auction CONDITION REPORT: . damage to the net ground. At some point this leaf has been dipped in tea or similar to alter the colour. Monture earlier than the leaf.

He set up his own advertising agency subsequently in Frith Street, Soho. As a wildlife illustrator, Colin Emberson provided illustrations for the Reader's Digest Nature Lover's Library Field Guides to Wild Flowers (1981) and Butterflies and Other insects (1984), as well as David Sutton's Concise Guide to Wild Flowers of Britain and Northern Europe (1990). Right-hand drive, 12,700 miles only, in gleaming Obsidian Black with classic red leather6.2-Litre V8. Roof-hinged Gullwing doors pay homage to the iconic 300SLImpressive service history. Most recent in August 2019 and only a few miles sinceStructured and panelled entirely in aluminium, lightweight carbon-fibre driveshaftsNo better way to describe this vehicle other than, 'truly breathtaking', it really is special There's something utterly beguiling about a large capacity V8 and the one you'll find under the bonnet of the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG is an absolute peach. It's a 6.2-litre unit and was the first V8 from the AMG stable to be designed from the ground up, with its initial application being in the E63 super-saloon. The engine was further developed for the SLS with a dry-sump set-up utilising 120 unique parts and, in this guise, could muster a very healthy 563bhp. It's a simply superb engine and even when running on part throttle it rumbles and crackles like distant thunder and lightning. It's mated to a seven-speed, dual-clutch transmission complete with a 'Race Start' launch-control system enabling a claimed 0-62mph time of 3.8secs and a top speed of 197mph. The SLS is one of those machines that had modern-classic written all over it from the moment it first saw the light of day and, whilst it was the first car to be fully designed by AMG in-house, it was sadly the last to be fitted with a naturally aspirated V8. However, it wasn't just a case of prodigious power and retro-inspired styling that made the SLS a modern icon as, when 'EVO Magazine' pitched it up against some pretty serious rivals, it won the motoring press over with its blend of all-round ability and everyday usability. Pitched head-to-head with Aston's V12 Vantage, Ferrari's 599 HGTE and the evergreen Porsche 911 Turbo 'S', the AMG's depth of talent won the day. The SLS on offer here is a right-hand drive example that's only covered 12,700 miles from new (at the time of cataloguing) and is finished in the striking combination of Obsidian Black with Classic Red leather. The digital service report in the cars accompanying history file states that it has been serviced six times in its short life, with the most recent documented in August 2019 at Waterhouse Chelmsford Service Centre at an indicated mileage of 12,665 miles. Supplied with two sets of keys and an MOT valid until January 2021 this is an absolutely immaculate example with serious presence. There is no better way to describe this special vehicle other than 'truly breathtaking'. We feel that it's being offered at a realistic guide price when you consider the quality and performance on offer and, as production ceased in 2014 and Mercedes-AMG have elected not to replace the car, we can only surmise what will happen to values. We commend this fabulous car for your attention. Click here for more information This car was consigned by Harry Whale. First-generation R230 transformed by AMG. 13,622 miles 6-litre, twin-turbocharged, V12 producing 604bhp and 740lbs/ft Dramatically presented in Almandine Black Metallic with 19", dual-spoke AMG alloys Fabulous bespoke Designo interior with Comfort Ventilated Seats Full service-history. Six recorded services with the most recent at 13,307 miles We are in danger of running out of superlatives. Possibly the best-looking R230 in the world AMG, the official performance division of Mercedes-Benz, has a long history of producing high-performance derivatives of Mercedes' standard production vehicles, and these improved versions enjoy an enthusiastic following worldwide. When the stunning SL55AMG was introduced in 2003 with its 5.4-litre V8 producing 476 BHP and a tree stump pulling 520lbs/ feet of torque it was naturally assumed it would remain top of the range, however, AMG had a further party-trick. A year later the SL 65 AMG arrived and was the new 'King of the Castle'. It retained the stylish looks and civilised manners of the rest of the range but was powered by a V12 leviathan capable of crushing the competition at a push of the accelerator. The twin-turbo, 6.0-litre engine delivers a remarkable 604hp which is tamed through an intricate network of safety features and keep-you-alive electronics. At 740 lbs-ft, the torque output is sufficient to keep you pinned in the immaculately stitched leather seats, in any gear at any time, whilst the five-speed automatic transmission with manual capability provides a good level of control. Distinctive 19" dual-spoke AMG-signature alloys camouflage the eight-piston caliper performance brakes and the suspension has been subtly tweaked to deal with the general increase in numbers. Performance is documented at 0-60mph in 3.6 secs and 0-100 mph in 7.5 seconds. All in all, a beautifully packaged amalgam of huge power, sumptuous comfort and window-rattling noise. This distinctive, original UK-supplied, right-hand drive, SL65AMG was ordered from Greenoaks Mercedes in late July 2004 and from the original purchase invoice, we can see that it was specified in Almandine Black Metallic with Designo Single-tone exclusive leather, Designo Maple door caps, Designo Anthracite carpets and Comfort Ventilated Seats bringing the overall total to a substantial £151,239.19. The Pre-Delivery inspection sheet is dated 16-11-2004 and is in the history file. At the time of cataloguing the indicated mileage is 13,622 and this is corroborated by the service booklet which records six services at Mercedes-Benz /AMG dealers with the most recent at Mercedes Norwich on 11-10-2019 at 13,307 miles. There are invoices in the file that detail these services and any additional works that were required as well as a complete complement of MOTs going back to 7-01-2007 including the current one which is valid until 20-04-2021. The car appears to be in superb condition throughout and is supplied with both keys and the complete owner's manuals in the correct binder. The R230 is one of the best-looking cars from the period and the larger-engined AMG cars have become collectable modern classics. Considering that less than 14,000 miles ago over £150,000 would have been necessary to own this fabulous, top-of-the-range Mercedes, today's guide seems sensible indeed. Full book pack, service book and spare key New tyres, freshly serviced and the MOT is valid until early October 2020 Aston Martin introduced the long-awaited Vantage version of their successful DB7 in 1999. Sporting a Cosworth-designed, 5.9-litre V12 producing a creamy 420bhp, the car was super-quick and was electronically limited to 185mph. The V12 had a serious appetite for air compared to its 6-cylinder predecessor, demanding a larger intake and other modifications to the frontal airflow were made to aid cooling. Other changes included chassis and braking upgrades to cope with the increased performance, and Ian Callum enlarged the grille, added fog lamps, and restyled the valances to give the car a more purposeful look. This superb example is a V12 Vantage with the very desirable six-speed manual gearbox and was originally supplied by Stratstone of Wilmslow on 28/02/2003 in Tungsten Silver with Obsidian leather. It has been enjoyed by three previous owners and the service records indicate that it's been regularly serviced with 17 stamps in the book, the vast majority by AM, with the most recent by a marque specialist on 18-9-2019 at 47,780 miles. The current MOT is valid until 6-10-2020 and the car is accompanied by the original green leather owner's guide including the service records, the V5C, an MOT History supporting the current mileage of just over 48,000 and a spare key. Front-engined, V12 manual Grand Tourers have seen mounting investor interest over the last few years and this impressively presented DB7 Vantage with its ageless looks, sophisticated colour combination, manual gearbox, immaculate service history and sensible mileage, seems remarkable value for money. UK-supplied, right-hand drive R107 280 SL, indicating just 69,582 miles (atoc) Delightfully presented in Cabernet Red Metallic with a matching factory hardtop Superb interior in Cream Beige MB-Tex with unmarked Burr Walnut veneers Smooth, fuel-injected straight-six producing 182bhp and 176lb/ft. 4-speed automatic box With its original handbooks and service book along with a substantial history file. Serviced most recently at Mercedes-Benz With Pagoda prices now out of reach, the equally stylish R107SL is a very attractive option Some cars just get better looking with age and the R107 Series Mercedes-Benz SL is definitely among them. Overshadowed for a long time by its graceful 'Pagoda' predecessor, it's now becoming better appreciated for what it is - a beautifully built sports roadster that is totally dependable. To this day, no car door closes with a more reassuring 'thunk' than a Mercedes SL, and everything about the car suggests solid engineering. Fast, comfortable and discreetly understated, the SL has a matchless ability to munch up the miles for year after year without ever seeming to falter. No wonder it stayed in production, fundamentally unaltered, from 1971 until 1989 - the longest production run of any Mercedes car to date. First registered in May ready for the summer of 1985, the original owners must have been rather pleased with their choice when they collected their gleaming new Cabernet Red Metallic Mercedes-Benz 280 SL, we imagine quickly driving home from the dealership to stow the factory hard-top on its stand at the back of the garage before setting off to enjoy open-top motoring at its very best. Today this example pleasingly continues to present well with the paintwork retaining a deep shine and the tasteful Cream Beige MB-Tex and Burr Walnut interior looking cared for. Clearly this SL has lived a pampered life and this is supported by a comprehensive history file with the most recent services carried out by a Mercedes-Benz main agent. In our vendor's words ''On the road, she is a fine GT tourer with a lusty performance from the super twin-cam engine allied to the smooth four-speed auto gearbox''. It's supplied with the original books including the service booklet stamped up-to-date and the above-mentioned history file containing old MOTs and related invoices. Good, well looked after examples of the 107 are becoming increasingly difficult to source and, offered at a very realistic guide having covered less than 70,000 miles, we believe this lovely Mercedes represents superb value for money and, at the very least, will offer its new owner many years of enjoyable motoring. From Rock Legend, Jay Kay's, amazing collection. Owned by Jay for the past nine years. One of his favourite cars Very rare and desirable. One of only 64 UK-built, right-hand drive cars and one of only 18 with the Getrag 5-speed manual box Classic Alpina bodywork with deep front splitter, boot lid spoiler, 16" Alpina wheels and 'Deco Set' graphics 135,000 miles. E28 six-cylinder engines are known for their longevity. Excellent history, service records etc Sounds and looks superb and at this guide price, combined with rock star provenance, this is a rare opportunity This is one of 500 B9 3.5s (E28) built between 1981 and 1985 of which just 64 are understood to have been right-hand drive examples. Of the 64, 46 were supplied with ZF automatic transmission, with only 18 (including this car) being optioned with the far more desirable Getrag five-speed manual gearbox. Costing almost twice that of the BMW 528i SE (E28) on which it was based, the B9 3.5 offered huge power and performance increases over the standard car. Manual transmission B9 3.5s were easily the fastest saloon cars of their day. According to Autocar, 0-60mph required just 6.3 seconds and top speed was 153mph putting the E28-based Alpina on a par with Porsche's then-current 911. Left-hand drive examples were built by Alpina at Buchloe while right-hand drive production took place at Sytner in Nottingham. Cars destined for transformation were supplied by BMW with certain modifications already in place and then further enhanced with a long list of Alpina upgrades. The B9 engine had been developed from the unit used in BMW's 635 and 735 variants. Uprated by Alpina with a gas-flowed cylinder head featuring hemispherical combustion chambers, bigger inlet valves and a gas-flowed inlet manifold, a 268-degree high-lift camshaft and balanced pistons enabled compression to rise from 9.3 to 10.2:1. Combined with revised fuel injection settings, a reprogrammed Bosch Motronic engine management system and Alpina twin-pipe exhaust system, the net result was a conservatively rated 245bhp at 5700rpm. The standard ZF automatic gearbox was retained (a Getrag 5-speed manual box was an option) and those cars destined to become B9s always came with a BMW-fitted 25% limited-slip differential that was further uprated with an Alpina-installed oil cooler. Suspension modifications saw progressive-rate coil springs and adjustable gas-filled Bilstein dampers fitted although the original front and rear anti-roll bars stayed. New Alpina 16-inch wheels measured 7-inches wide at the front and 8 at the rear (requiring a small modification to the rear wheel arch), these light alloy rims originally being shod with Pirelli P7 tyres. Cosmetically the exterior was enhanced by Alpina's deep front spoiler, a rubber boot lid spoiler and body-coloured door mirrors, the eye-catching Deco stripe kit being an optional extra. Early examples were supplied with an amazing interior, the figure-hugging Scheel bucket seats being upholstered in Alpina's trademark grey fabric with blue and yellow stripes. Other bespoke features included an Alpina leather-rimmed four-spoke steering wheel, Alpina instrumentation, Alpina wooden gearknob and numbered dash plaque. Offered here is a beautiful B9 3.5 Alpina that for the last 9 years has formed part of a significant collection belonging to rock legend Jay Kay. First registered on 27th October 1983, this rare UK-delivered right-hand drive example is believed to be one of just 18 B9s with a manual gearbox. 64 right-hand drive cars in total were upgraded by Sytner in Nottingham (Alpina's UK partner) to this specification most of which had been delivered from BMW with an automatic transmission. Indicating 134,756 miles at the time of cataloguing 'A853 FRA' presents very well, the black paintwork retains a deep gloss and the Alpina clothed Scheel sports seats are superb. Accompanying the car is the original book-pack and a substantial history file containing a wealth of old MOTs, invoices dating back to the mid-80s and some correspondence between the previous owner and Jay Kay, both clearly BMW enthusiasts. It appears that shortly after purchasing the B9, Jay Kay instructed a thorough inspection from a marque specialist with all areas requiring attention to be taken care of. Pleasingly, a customer copy of an invoice for the purchase of this car from Sytner of Nottingham can also be discovered in the file, dated 1st September 1986, and this invoice clearly shows the full Alpina B9 specification leaving little doubt on the authenticity of this particular Alpina. Having been well maintained over the years and carefully selected for a good reason to form part of a diverse and interesting collection of motorcars, this is an opportunity to take ownership of this truly superb super saloon from the 1980s. A modern classic that really stands out from the crowd and should rightfully be preserved for future generations to see and admire. Performance BMWs continue to have a strong following and this Alpina is sure to be the talking point of any classic car show you choose to attend. An original 1600 Mexico correctly finished in Monza Blue with white stripes A combination of the Type 49 body-shell, the 1600cc Kent crossflow, and the 2000E gearbox Clearly restored to the highest standards. Full engine rebuild in 2015 (invoice in file) Bought by our vendor in 2016 and offered from his private collection A very fine example offered at a sensible guide. The Ford Escort Mexico was introduced in November 1970 and was so named because of Ford Motor Company's victory in the World Cup Rally which started in London on 19/04/1970 and finished some 16,000 miles later in Mexico. Originally Ford intended to use Escorts with the Twin Cam or BDA engine, but after some local reconnaissance, it was decided that high speeds and large power outputs were less important than reliability and ease of servicing, and therefore the 'Kent' pushrod engine was used in the Escort shell. It seems likely that Ford already had plans to produce a high-performance Escort to fit in the range between the 1300GT and the Twin Cam/RS1600, but their victory in Mexico provided an ideal platform to launch such a model. The engineers at the newly formed A.V.O (Advanced Vehicles Operations) quickly developed the 'Mexico', marrying the Type 49 bodyshell, as used in the Twin Cam and RS1600, with the 1600cc Kent 'crossflow' engine and 2000E gearbox. So, effectively, the Mexico was basically a re-engined Twin Cam/RS1600. The Mexico became AVO's most successful and numerous of the 'Rally Sport Escorts,' and had a number of advantages on the road, in that it had excellent performance, was easy to maintain, relatively easy to insure, and above all, it was great to drive, something which is still true today. Offered here is an original, UK-supplied 1600 Mexico correctly finished in Monza Blue with White stripes. Purchased by our vendor in 2016, it has remained in his private collection since but he is in the fortunate position of being able to shuffle his collection around every few years and has only used the little blue Ford occasionally. The car has clearly been fully restored to a very high standard and within the history file is an invoice for a full engine rebuild dating from 2015. Also in the file is a communication from the DVLA detailing the car's nine former owners. The Mk1 Escort Mexico remains high on most enthusiast's 'Wish List' and this is a very fine example offered at a sensible guide. Click here for more information This car was consigned by Joe Watts.
