BEATRICE: (1857-1944) British Princess, the fifth daughter & youngest child of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. A charming, early A.L.S., Beatrice, seven pages, 8vo, Osborne, 29th December 1868, to Mrs. Tylor, on her attractive colour printed monogrammed stationery. The ten-year-old Princess writes to thank her correspondent for some presents, remarking 'The hood will be very useful. I am only afraid of spoiling it, as it is so delicate. The pretty little box with bonbons reminds me of Switzerland, where I was so happy.' She continues 'I have read the little book all through and find it very touching' and concludes 'Charlotte has asked me to thank you in her name as she had no time to write herself. She was delighted with the tea-set, for she had not got one yet. I am very sorry that she is gone, we were very happy together….' The light pencil guide lines prepared for the Princess can still be seen in places. VG Princess Beatrice's correspondent is most likely to be Isabella Tylor (1822-1906) a friend of the British Royal family and husband (from 1850) of Alfred Tylor (1824-1884) English Geologist.

The Olaf Chedzoy Collection of Ready Reckoners and Mathematical Books. A collection of over 260 items, dating from 1757 to 1971, including ready reckoners, tables, logarithms, works on algebra, arithmetic, commercial arithmetic, calculus, and geometry; school books and other works for children, as well, works and tables connected with agriculture, commerce, engineering, trades and industry. The collection emphasises the social side of mathematics and how it was used by people in different walks of life. One theme which recurs is the proposal to use the decimal system for coinage and measurement. The genesis of this collection was the realisation that with the ubiquity of pocket calculators there would little need for printed ready reckoners, and they would cease to be produced in any significant numbers Olaf Chedzoy is a distinguished statistician who was a lecturer at Bath University. In 1952, he started his career at Ferranti, becoming one of the original programmers of the Ferranti 'Mark I', arguably the first general purpose electronic digital computer.
