CORNWALL – ACCOUNT BOOKManuscript account book of James Barker of Coverack, with ownership inscription 'James Barker His Book' on reverse of front endpaper and 'James Barkers/ Book 1786' on back endpaper, comprising early entries for haberdashery and cloth ('for a Hatt', '...I yd ½ of holland... 16 buttons... thread... pins... fustain... druggett') and other goods such as sugar and candles, later entries concerning nautical matters ('...Re'd for the Little Boat Share of Copper... for Loading of Goods out of Henry Robarts...'), trading in fish (mackerel, pilchards etc.), brandy, rum and gin, repairs, piloting and landing of goods ('...For Landing Captain Martin... for Pilateing a brig from America...'), and salvage ('... share of the wreck Salvd from the brill...'), noting profits from voyages ('...1794 January 6th the Harmony sailed the first trip for Guernsey...'), with mention of local names and places ('Mr Sandys of Pengarak', 'Theophyllus Johns', 'Cousen Batt the Dockters son', 'Joseph Rogers Trebarweth'), notes on the family ('...August 9th 1789 George Barker was born/ at 11 Oclock in the morning...'), and events ('...November 5 1788 the Maccrony saild for Guernsey with Anthony Barker, Nicholas Hoskin, Philip Hicks & Francis Lowry on Bord and have not been heard of Since...'), some entries inverted, others struck through, 44 leaves, c.11 either neatly cut or roughly torn away with loss, dust-staining, ink blots and other marks, edges frayed, slightly later brown wrappers, rebacked, loose within contemporary limp ruled vellum stitched over later card, marked, worn and stained, 480 x 190mm., preserved in a black solander box, 1730's to 1790'sFootnotes:'FOR PILATEING A BRIG FROM AMERICA': An account book used by several generations of a Cornish piloting family.Whilst early entries in our volume relate to trade in haberdashery and concern cloth, buttons and other accoutrements, by the latter half of the century, the Barker family appear to have concentrated their efforts on piloting. The volume bears the ownership inscription of James Barker of Coverack (1747-1840) who is listed as a licenced pilot in the Compulsory Pilotage Notice for 1809 (the year licensing of pilots was first introduced). The Barker family of Coverack plied their trade as pilots for several generations, using their skilled knowledge of the coastline to help guide ships safely round the treacherous Cornish coast, boarding ships and providing information to the ships' masters on unfamiliar tides, currents and underwater hazards (Knight, T., 'Falmouth Pilots of the late Nineteenth Century', Troze: The Online Journal of the National Maritime Museum Cornwall, December 2019, Vol. 8, No. 1). Judging from the entries in the present volume, the Barkers were involved in several operations, not only piloting and landing of goods but rescue and lucrative salvage operations as well as trading in fish, rum and gin. The account of the Bodmin Sessions for 4 October 1808 also identifies James Barker as a fish curer: '...shipped at Liverpool 2,800 bushels of British fishery salt to carry it to Coverack, in parish of Gweek, on account of James Barker, fish curer. During a storm on the voyage they lost 65 bushels 22 lbs. of salt...' (Archives and Cornish Studies Centre, ref. QS/1/7/555). One particularly poignant entry in our volume amongst the columns of pounds, shillings and pence serves as a reminder of the dangers faced by those who made their living on the seas: '...November 5 1788 the Maccrony saild for Guernsey with Anthony Barker, Nicholas Hoskin, Philip Hicks & Francis Lowry on Bord and have not been heard of Since...'.This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: •• Zero rated for VAT, no VAT will be added to the Hammer Price or the Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Lot 111

JODOROWSKY'S DUNE - Circa 1980s Bound Copy of Storyboard and Design Bible for Alejandro Jodorowsky's Unproduced DuneA circa 1980s bound copy of the storyboard and design bible for Alejandro Jodorowsky's unproduced version of the sci-fi epic Dune, based on the novel by Frank Herbert. Director Jodorowsky and producer Michel Seydoux went through an extensive development period in 1974 and 1975 for their never-realized version of the film, working with famed artists Jean Giraud, known as Moebius, Chris Foss, and H.R. Giger. As they developed and attempted to finance the project, they produced a visual bible containing a complete illustrated storyboard for the film done by Moebius, as well as concept illustrations for vehicles, characters, and sets by Moebius and artists Foss and Giger. These binders, produced in 1974 or 1975, were used by the creative team to express the vision for the project. They were bound in cloth, with a printed color cover attached to the front along the lines of a promotional poster. Only a small number were produced for the key team members of the project. In the 1980s, a very few exceptional printed copies of the original design bible were created. These copies were distinguished by their red leather covers and gold title lettering. They also included the full storyboard and numerous design sketches by Foss, Giger, and Moebius and are believed to be complete reproductions of the original production-era bible. A copy of the original cover is also bound into the red-leather version. They were a larger size than the original binders, and as they were likely an additional generation along in the copying process, binding can be seen on the right edge of many of the printed pages in this version of the design bible. The red-leather books were created at Jean Giraud's company Starwatcher Graphics and only a handful of these later copies are known to exist; this example has been with the current owner since approximately 1988 and was received from Starwatcher at that time. This printed book opens with seven color printed pages of character designs and moves into more than 250 black-and-white printed pages containing extensive storyboards for all 90 scenes of the proposed film, along with intermittent printed design sketches for vehicles, sets, and other visual elements of the film. The storyboards were originally drawn by Moebius, who also created most of the costume designs. Many other design sketches and illustrations were created by Foss and Giger. The storyboard pages contain text descriptions in both French and English.Jodorowsky's Dune project has been heavily studied by cinephiles and celebrated in the 2013 documentary Jodorowsky's Dune. These design bibles are therefore well-known to fans of his work, despite their exceeding rarity; only a couple examples of the production-era bibles have been offered in the past, and this is believed to be the only "second edition" (circa 1980s) version to come to auction. The book exhibits minor wear on the corners, and some variation on the quality and clarity of the printed images on the interior. Dimensions: 18" x 12" x 2" (45.75 cm x 30.5 cm x 5 cm)Sold without copyright; see notice in the Buyer's Guide. Estimate: $40,000 - 60,000This lot will be auctioned on Tuesday, June 21st. It was used as a daily driver up until 2000 after which it went into dry garage storage for 16 years. When it emerged, it was sympathetically restored including a complete engine restoration, paintwork where needed (but not a complete respray), the Pepperpot alloy wheels renovated and the underside treated. The vendor tells us that there are now no signs of rust anywhere. The Ford has had no aftermarket upgrades and the interior has not been changed at all. 2004 VW Type 2 T2c Danbury CaravanetteMake: Volkswagen Model: Type 2 T2c Danbury CaravanetteYear: 2004Mileage: 108180VIN: PBWGB07X64P000938Configuration: Right Hand DriveRegistration: WX54MFFTransmission: manualAlthough the 'Bay Window' Volkswagen Type 2 Transporter went out of production in Europe in 1979, in Latin America, where VW had an especially strong presence, manufacture of the T2 carried on. Brazilian manufacture only ceased in 2013, by which point the roof had been raised by 10 inches to create the T2c variant and the venerable old air-cooled engine at the rear had been swapped for a water-cooled unit. This example is one of the last with air-cooled power, in this case a 1.6-litre unit. It was constructed in Brazil during 2004 before coming over to the UK where Beetles (UK) Limited converted it into a Danbury camper, with two-tone white over pale green paint, non-standard cloth, bench seat that converts into a rock 'n' roll bed, two-burner stove with sink, immobiliser, underseal, auxiliary battery, elevating roof and vent, CD radio and four speakers, winter pack (including petrol heater), front-mounted solid spare wheel cover, chrome trim pack, bike rack, awning, roof rack and mains hook-up. Further modifications throughout the years included Suede Green leather and tartan upholstery, full leather door cards, Porsche-style Fuchs alloy wheels, walnut and tulip wood floor and table, new cooker and sink unit, and a flat-screen Alpine media system. A £2750 bill in the paperwork indicates a reconditioned 1.6-litre Brazilian exchange engine was fitted in October 2016, while it seems a full restoration has also been carried out relatively recently, judging by the van's body condition. The odometer currently shows 108,206km (67,236 miles) and five previous owners are noted on the V5C. There's a fresh MoT valid until May 2023. The engine starts easily and runs well. The history folder includes the V5C, owner's manual, service book (stamped up to 108,174km in December 2021), Alpine Media Station manuals in both paper and CD form, and a Volkswagen Transporter Haynes Enthusiast Guide book by Jonathan Harvey. There's some maintenance invoices, including the bill for the reconditioned engine. PLEASE SEE BELOW FOR VIDEO PRODUCED 30TH MAY BY ACA OF THIS CAR.

1996 Ford Mondeo Verona One owner. 23,584 miles from newMake: FordModel: Mondeo VeronaYear: 1996Mileage: 23584VIN: WF0AXXGBBATK18785Configuration: Right Hand DriveRegistration: P578BPBTransmission: ManualThe Verona was a mid-spec Mondeo semi-permanent special edition that was effectively a 1.8 LX with air conditioning and some other bonus features, aimed squarely at private buyers. The vendor describes this example, registered in October 1996, as being in 'timewarp condition' with just one owner from new and 23,584 warranted miles - plus it's in the distinctive and attractive colour of Mistral Blue too. The good history file contains 17 old MoTs (with the current certificate expiring in March 2023), along with an assortment of tax discs, a small selection of bills, and the original sales invoice from Henleys Ford of Farnborough (for £12,793.93) along with some other new car literature. There's also the original red master key as well as a spare set of keys. The original book pack is present with items such as the owner's handbook, audio systems operating guide and service book. While this is only stamped up to the first 1500-mile service in 1997, the owner subsequently kept a notebook record of all work carried out from September 1997 (at 2430 miles) through to March 2017 (at 23,577 miles) after which, it seems, the car was taken off the road before being relicensed this year. Thanks to this notebook, plus the MoT history, it's possible to verify the low mileage as genuine. PLEASE SEE BELOW FOR VIDEO PRODUCED 30TH MAY BY ACA OF THIS CAR.
