A good mid 18th Century silver and tortoise shell pair cased verge pocket watch with alarum by Conyers Dunlop of London, No. 3001, the white enamel dial with Roman and Arabic numerals to the chapter ring, the central alarum dial with Arabic numerals, with blued steel "Beetle and Poker" hands, to the verge escapement with fusee, Tompion type index with silver regulating dial with Roman numerals, secured in engraved subsidiary plate, tangent screw mainspring setup with fine pierced and engraved cock with diamond endstone, with turned baluster shaped pillars, gilt brass dust cap engraved with maker's name and number, with alarm hammer sounding on bell, contained in pierced and engraved silver inner case decorated with female mask, finely pierced and engraved with leaf scroll ornament, in silver and tortoise shell case secured by decorative silver pins, 53mm diameter (gross weight 153 grammes - circa 1745) Note: Conyers Dunlop was in business at Spring Garden, Charing Cross, apprenticed to his father Andrew Dunlop in 1725, member of the Clockmakers Company in 1733, master of the Clockmakers Company in 1758, died in 1779
An early 18th Century silver pair cased verge pocket watch by Andrew Dunlop of London, No. 782, the silver champleve enamel dial with Roman and Arabic numerals within textured panels and with blued steel "Beetle and Poker" hands, the dial centre with oval cartouche worded "Dunlop" and with square calendar aperture, to the verge movement with fusee, Tompion type regulator with silver regulating disc with Arabic numerals secured in pierced and engraved subsidiary plate, tangent screw mainspring setup with pierced and engraved cock decorated with mask and leaf scroll ornament, with Egyptian style pillars, in plain silver pair case, 54mm diameter (gross weight 142 grammes), with case maker's mark "I.W." (thought to be John Willoughby and numbered 782) Note: Andrew Dunlop recorded in London, member of the Clockmakers Company 1701-1732 - Good watches in the Science Museum and Dennison Collection
