The amirs of Sind then invited him to visit them as 'the most skilful of physicians and their best friend, and the cementer of the bonds of amity between the two governments', and on his return he was complimented by the government on the zeal and ability he had displayed at Cutch and Hyderabad. 1906 Darracq Model 40/60 Runabout Chassis no. 11013NA Engine no. 9312422 ci, Side-Valve Bi-Bloc 4-Cylinder Engine c.50hp 3-Speed Manual TransmissionSemi-Elliptic Leaf Spring Suspension2-Wheel Rear Drum and Transmission Brake*Well-known large horsepower French speedster*Formerly in the collections of George Waterman and William G. Lassiter*In the present ownership since 1999*Potential for fast Brass tour carsDARRACQOne of the most enigmatic of posters of this era is for a brazen Darracq screaming horizontally across the page, with a tranquil Victor Hemery at its wheel, it would boldly proclaim the success of 1905, 198 Kilometers in the hour, a World Record, 1st in the Vanderbilt Cup and 1st at the Circuit des Ardennes, that same year. In fact, the successes of 1905 had been developed out of a much more humble entrée into the world of automobiles. Born in Bordeaux in 1885, Alexandre Darracq made a fortune in the bicycle industry's boom years of the late 19th Century, and like many of his contemporaries subsequently turned his attention to powered transport. Darracq's new venture was financed by the sale of his Gladiator bicycle business to Dunlop, though he continued to make bicycle components in his new factory at Suresnes, Seine. Darracq was a businessman rather than an engineer and had recruited designer Paul Ribeyrolles to be responsible for its production. One of the first steps in a more substantial and sporting automobile was the arrival of the 'Flying Fifteen' which was powered by a 3.0-liter sidevalve four rated at 15hp and would go on to become Darracq's most successful model to date. Of exceptional quality, the Flying Fifteen remained essentially unchanged for the next three years, its success helping the company capture a 10% share of the French market. Here in the United States, the Darracq importer accomplished the remarkable feat of covering 2,350 miles in 14 days at the wheel of a 15hp Darracq without stopping its engine! The behemoth that accomplished the 1905 records was a 22-liter V8-engined monster also designed by Ribeyrolles, they would repeat the Vanderbilt Cup victory in 1906. Against this backdrop, it was logical that the marque would have success in America, but it seems that only the larger Darracq models were ever imported as new to the USA. Their original agent was F.A. La Roche & Co. of 652 Hudson Street in New York City. That firm's proprietor tested and proved a Flying Fifteen with a fortnight of continuous running and some 2,350 miles covered. The 40/60 as offered today, was a 7-liter T-head powered car which in France was catalogued as a 40hp, but for the US market was listed with this nomenclature. While chains might be seen as an iconic characteristic today, they were becoming considered as passé and were quickly being replaced by transferal by shaft drive which was accepted as being more refined, the 40/60 also had the refined 'belt and braces' technology of both magneto and coil ignition. THE MOTORCAR OFFEREDDarracq were on top of the world when this large horsepower speedster was originally built, and it would have been images such as this that no doubt inspired its acquisition. That purchase was at the Christie's auction in West Palm Beach in March 1999 when William G. Lassiter sold his collection. As catalogued then, the car could chart provenance back to the incubation of the hobby, with known ownership commencing with one the most famous pioneers of the car collecting movement George Waterman who was based here in Rhode Island. Together with his collecting partner Kirk Gibson, the very first car museum of its kind could have been here in Newport at Belcourt House on Bellevue Avenue a step away from The Audrain today. Termed by Gibson and Waterman as a Musee des Invalides, it had already outgrown its Boston premises and Newport would have been ideal, afterall motorsport had begun here in 1899. But the idea of the such an institution for greasy old jalopies, horrified the neighbors and it was not to be... Well at least Newport can count on the Audrain today!Regardless, the Darracq was part of that famed grouping in the 1950s. From Waterman-Gibson it passed to the Burton Upjohn Collection in Michigan. At this point, it was restored by John Caperton to the guise in which we see it today, that of an archetypal speedster, with bucket seats and barrel gas tank. From Burton Upjohn its next ownership came in 1965 when it was purchased by Donald Gilmore of Kalamazoo, in that same state. It would reside in the Gilmore Museum for many years, until acquired by Lassiter.Surprisingly, although secured at that prominent auction, it is understood that the Darracq was rarely, if ever used by these two generations of collectors, probably owing to all the other cars that cried out for attention. It stands today as a larger horsepower motorcar from an high quality brand which was at a peak in this period, and when returned to the road it will no doubt prove to be an exhilarating and run road racer. The ex-Carl Fogarty, Michael Rutter, North West 200-winning1993 Ducati 888 CorsaFrame no. ZDM888S*002154Engine no. none•Specially prepared by the factory for Carl Fogarty•Entered by the UK importer team, Moto Cinelli•Authenticated provenance•Present ownership since 2005•Engine rebuilt by John Hackett in 2005•Only four parade laps with James Courtney since the engine rebuildLike Duke's with Norton, Surtees' with MV, Hailwood's with Honda and Sheene's with Suzuki, Carl Fogarty's name will forever be linked with that of Ducati, for whom the Blackburn-born rider secured four World Superbike Championships in the 1990s, a monumental achievement unlikely to be bettered. Carl's association with the Italian manufacturer began in 1992 - his second season in World Superbike - when he rode a privately entered Ducati 888, scoring a memorable debut victory in the second race at Donington Park. That win, plus the World Endurance Championship title that same year, earned him a place in the works Ducati World Superbike team for the 1993 season. In addition to his works ride in WSBC, Carl was provided with the machine offered here, a Ducati 888 Corsa (Race) specially prepared by the factory to a specification higher than that enjoyed by other customer Corsas entered by private teams, with the intention of competing in non-clashing rounds of the British Championship and major events such as the Isle of Man TT and North West 200. Entered by UK importer team Moto Cinelli, the bike was used at Oulton Park where Carl fell while contesting the lead. At the North West 200 in Northern Ireland he won both the Superbike race, beating the Dunlop brothers (Robert 2nd and Joey 3rd), and the feature North West 200 event ahead of Robert Dunlop (2nd) and Phillip McCallen (3rd). He also set a new lap record of 122.49mph.As it happened, Carl did not contest the TT in 1993 and missed the other British Championship rounds, leaving the 888 Corsa redundant until the Donington Park round of the World Superbike Championship where it was ridden in practice by Niall Mackenzie. Towards the end of the domestic season it was entered in the Cadwell Park round of the British Championship, only to be crashed heavily in practice by rider Phil Borley. The machine could not be repaired in time for the race and was subsequently rebuilt around a new frame, which Classic Racer magazine's former editor Malcolm Wheeler (Moto Cinelli team manager in 1993) confirmed was stamped with the original number. Damaged beyond repair, the old frame was scrappedLate in 1993 the Corsa was purchased by Barry Reekie on behalf of his employers, the garden machinery manufacturer McCulloch, for their sponsored rider Michael Rutter to use in the TT Superbike races of the 1994 HEAT/British Supercup series. At the end of a season dominated by the Duckhams Norton rotaries of Ian Simpson and Phil Borley, Rutter finished 4th in the Superbike Championship despite a considerably smaller budget than many of his rivals. Painted in McCulloch's distinctive bright yellow livery, the bike is pictured on page 187 of Motocourse, 1994-95.The 888 Corsa was retained as a spare for 1995, McCulloch having acquired a new-generation Ducati 916 for Rutter to use as his main machine, and at some time during 1996 was sold to Robin Mortimer (the late brother of Chas Mortimer, the ex-Grand Prix rider). In 1998 it was completely restored - incorporating new crankcases, pistons, etc - and refinished in its 1993 Foggy/Moto Cinelli livery by marque specialist John Hackett (Ducati Coventry), mechanic with the Moto Cinelli team during the 1990s.The ex-Fogarty/Rutter 888 was purchased at Bonhams' Stafford auction in April 2005 (Lot 543) by the current vendor, a Northern Ireland-based private collector who has kept it in dehumidified storage ever since. Found to have a corroded magnesium outer cover, its engine was rebuilt again in December 2005 by John Hackett at Ducati Coventry at a cost of £3,440 (detailed invoice on file). After the rebuild's completion the Ducati was given a shakedown test at the Kirkistown circuit by Ulster road-racer James Courtney, who rode the machine as 'No.4' in the Ulster Grand Prix Parade on 19th August 2006 (four laps in total). In 2009 the 888 Corsa was reunited with Carl Fogarty at that year's Ulster Grand Prix meeting on 14th/15th August, this being the last occasion it appeared in public.Offered for sale in the 30th anniversary year of Carl Fogarty's famous North West 200 wins, this historic Ducati 888 Corsa comes with a most substantial history file. The latter contains a copy of the 1993 Coca-Cola International North West 200 Official Souvenir Programme; a printout of race results and lap times; a signed document from Malcolm Wheeler confirming provenance; email and signed documentation from John Hackett confirming provenance and history; copies of magazines featuring the machine; Bonhams' April 2005 Stafford auction catalogue; 2006 Ulster Grand Prix Programme; and a CD-ROM of photographs of Carl Fogarty with the bike and James Courtney riding it.Key not requiredFootnotes:All lots are sold 'as is/where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to bidding.Lot to be sold without reserve. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Lot 437

The ex-Peter Hickman, Isle of Man Senior TT and Macao Grand Prix-winning 2018 BMW S1000RR SuperbikeFrame no. *WB10D5005HZ701705*Engine no. 104EA 3818 K720● Used by Peter Hickman throughout the 2018 season● Purchased by the current vendor immediately after the Macao Grand PrixCurrently the undisputed master of public roads racing, Peter Hickman first grabbed the headlines in 2014 when he set a record for the 'fastest newcomer' at the Isle of Man TT races with a lap at an average speed of 129.104mph. He progressed steadily, and in 2017 finished on the podium in all five TTs he contested, a quite remarkable achievement. Twelve months later he scored his first Isle of Man TT win, in the 2018 Superstock event, beating Michael Dunlop (BMW, 2nd) and Dean Harrison (Kawasaki, 3rd).Hickman's 2018 campaign had got off to a bad start when he was forced to retire the Smiths Racing BMW S1000RR from the opening Superbike TT with an engine issue. He bounced back to take the Superstock race and bagged 3rd and 2nd places respectively in the two Supersport races on the Triumph. The stage was set for an epic encounter with rivals Michael Dunlop and Dean Harrison in the prestigious Senior TT. Harrison led from the start and after the first refuelling stop was 8.2 seconds ahead of Hickman. Exploiting his superiority over the mountain, Hickman steadily closed the gap and took the lead on the final lap, crossing the line a mere two seconds ahead of the Kawasaki rider and smashing the existing lap record in the process with an average speed of 135.452mph, a record that still stands. Since then Lincolnshire-based Hickman has not looked back and now has nine TT victories to his credit. For many years British riders have closed out the racing season with a trip to the Macao Grand Prix, a spectacular public roads event run around the city centre. Peter Hickman had already won twice, in 2015 and 2016, when he lined up for the 2018 event. For Macao, Hickman's TT-winning BMW Superbike was sponsored by UK property company Aspire-Ho and Bathams Brewery. Bathams had been sponsoring Michael Rutter in UK races and he would be Hickman's team-mate and chief rival at Macao, riding the Honda RC213V. Hickman got past Rutter on lap three and proceeded to run away with the race, which was red-flagged after 12 out of the intended 15 laps had been completed.'It's fantastic for me and the team, and to give our sponsors Aspire-Ho a win here is absolutely brilliant,' he said after the race. Victory at Macao capped a stellar season for Hickman, who had also won at the North West 200 and Ulster Grand Prix, and made it into the British Superbike Championship Showdown. The BMW S1000RR Spuperbike offered here is one of those used by Peter Hickman during the 2018 season, including at the Isle of Man TT, North West 200, and Ulster Grand Prix, but at time of cataloguing it had not been possible to link it with specific race results.Immediately after the Macao Grand Prix in 2018, Hickman's winning BMW was sold to our vendor. Photographs taken at the time of purchase are on file together with others of Peter Hickman and the machine, and of its being ridden on the Isle of Man TT parade lap in 2019. The vendor, a retired businessman and enthusiast, has been an avid collector of various motorcycles over the years, including a number of historic racing machines, in particular those ridden by Peter Hickman.Footnotes:All lots are sold 'as is/where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to bidding. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Lot 519

1930 Sunbeam 499cc Model 9 Twin PortRegistration no. BF 8892Frame no. D7865Engine no. LL4435•Originally owned and raced in Germany•Rescued from storage in 2007 and repatriated to the UK•Restored over the following 10 years•Only used for occasional show rides since completionThis Vintage-era Sunbeam was rescued in 2007 from a barn in Germany (near the Czech Republic border) where it had been laid up prior to WW2 and remained undercover for 70-plus years. Slightly modified from original specification by its original German owner, this machine was reportedly campaigned at various European dirt-track races during the early 1930s. Apparently the bike was crashed in a race and the forks and front wheel were damaged. A replacement set of NSU forks was fitted to continue campaigning, and these were subsequently replaced with a complete (and better handling) 1932 Sunbeam front end (forks, hub, wheel, etc). The motorcycle was subsequently repatriated to the UK. An exhaustive tear down, inspection, and reassembly was conducted over the following 10 years, requiring only the reinstatement of the original kickstart lever and fitting a kickstart return spring, kickstart shaft, and quadrant. The main engine bearings were renewed, new valve guides fitted, and the valves and seats refreshed; these being the only renovations needed. The ex-Peter Hickman, FHO Racing, Isle of Man Superbike TT and Senior TT-winning, 2022 BMW M1000RR SuperbikeEngine no. A12A10A BMW *1522K708*●Offered for sale by FHO Racing●Presented as it finished the 2022 Senior TTNever before has a 'current' TT-winning motorcycle been offered for sale at a public auction, and Bonhams is especially proud to have been entrusted with finding a new home for Peter Hickman's 2022 Isle of Man Superbike TT and Senior TT-winning BMW M1000RR. Riding the FHO Racing entered, Gas Monkey Garage-sponsored machine, Lincolnshire-based Hickman had won the Superbike race earlier in the week, beating Kawasaki-mounted Dean Harrison into 2nd place, before repeating his achievement in the delayed Senior event on the Saturday, with Harrison once again runner up. Hickman led from start to finish to win Saturday's race by 16.918s from Harrison. Originally scheduled to take place on Friday afternoon, the race was pushed back to an 11am start on Saturday, and although windy conditions over the Mountain presented a challenge, the race started on time and ran for the full six laps. With an opening lap at 132.381mph, Hickman enjoyed an 8.362sec lead over Harrison. On lap two, he upped his pace to 132.627mph, which proved to be the race's fastest lap and helped increase the advantage over his Kawasaki rival to 14.6sec. After a slightly longer pit stop to take on the necessary amount of fuel, the gap reduced initially on lap three, but by half race distance it had opened to 18.6sec. With the wind continuing to cause problems over the Mountain, speeds were slightly reduced in the second half but with two more 130mph-plus laps, 35-year-old Hickman was able to control the race from the front to give FHO its third win of the week. His Senior victory was Hickman's fourth of 2022, taking his tally of TT victories to nine and podium finishes to 20 following wins in the Supertwin and Superstock events, and making him only the fourth rider to win four TTs in a week. Peter's efforts earned him the Joey Dunlop Championship with a total of 111 points.'To win another Senior TT is epic and although conditions weren't brilliant with the strong winds for the first two laps, it definitely improved as the race wore on,' said Peter after the finish. 'A six-lap Senior race was what we all wanted though, and we managed to get the job done so I couldn't be happier. It's awesome to give FHO Racing three wins out of three at its first TT and I've got to say a massive thanks to the team who've done a fantastic job all fortnight.'A full listing of this highly developed superbike's outstanding specification is available but is far too lengthy to reproduce here. Suffice to say that highlights include a braced frame supplied directly by BMW; a BMW Type 7.1 factory engine and airbox; STM clutch; Akrapovic large-bore titanium exhaust; full Motech electronics; Oz wheels; Suter swingarm; Brembo brakes; Alpha/Bonamici subframe and triple clamps; Talos Designs 24-litre fuel tank; Öhlins suspension and steering damper; and the Dunlop tyres used for the 2022 Senior TT race. Offered for sale by FHO Racing, the machine comes with their email confirming its provenance and is presented as it finished the 2022 Senior TT with its original race-winning fairing complete with Manx flies! An unrepeatable opportunity. 1950 Norton 490cc 500T Trials ProjectRegistration no. MXS 539Frame no. E3T 27267Engine no. E3T 27267The Norton 500T was introduced in 1949, and continued in the Norton range until 1955. During that period, it established itself as one of the more effective trials machines of its day. With 100 degrees of rotation on the front forks, alloy engine, Norton's class-leading long Roadholder forks, a Dunlop trials saddle, small petrol and oil tanks, low compression, and strengthened alloy mudguards, the 500T proved to be an extremely good trials tool for the likes of John Draper, Geoff Duke, Jeff Smith, Olga Kevelos, and many others. This project was purchased by the owner some years ago, as a restoration project, and some of the rarer parts were no longer with the machine. Accordingly, with not inconsiderable effort and expense, he has sought out and obtained the missing parts. It now has the correct petrol and oil tanks, tool box, rear mudguard stay, Manx-type clutch and brake levers (replicas), correct wide ratio short-shaft dolls-head gearbox, and correct Smiths 467/33/L speedometer, cradle and cup. As one side of the top gearbox mounting has cracked, there is also a spare gearbox shell. As the owner's plans have changed, there is now an opportunity for someone else to embark on a restoration of one of the most iconic trials bikes of the post-war era. Prospective purchasers should satisfy themselves as to the completeness, or otherwise, of this project which is sold strictly as viewed, for restoration. Documentation consists of a current V5C only. The machine does not have a key.Footnotes:All lots are sold 'as is/where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to bidding. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

The Dave Degens, 1965 Barcelona 24 Hours-winning1965 Dresda Triton 650cc Racing MotorcycleRegistration no. ULP 715FFrame no. X 737Engine no. T120 DW 376•Built specifically for the 1965 Barcelona 24 Hours race•Restored by Dave Degens•Alan Dudley Ward engine•Ridden by Dave at the 2006 Goodwood Festival of SpeedDave Degens started racing in 1956 on a BSA Gold Star. After a year racing the 'Goldie', Dave bought an AJS 7R from Twickenham dealer Geoff Monty and raced it with some success, only to have to sell the bike back to Monty when called up for National Service in the Army. Fortunately, Dave had an understanding CO, who allowed him time off to go racing, commencing with an outing at Brands Hatch aboard one of Monty's 350cc Manx Nortons. Dave kept racing Monty's bikes while doing his National Service and began working for him when it was over. In 1963 Dave bought Dresda Autos, formerly a retail outlet for scooters on Putney Bridge Road in Southwest London. By this time he had already built three Tritons. As Dave's business activities began to expand, so did his racing career. He rode for prominent entrants such as Syd Lawton, Paul Dunstall, Tom Arter and Tom Kirby, and it was while riding for Lawton that he enjoyed his first taste of endurance racing success, winning both the 1964 and 1965 Thruxton 500-mile races on a Triumph Bonneville. It was at Barcelona in 1964, when he was riding a works BMW, that Dave conceived the idea of building a machine specifically for endurance racing, which he was convinced would be capable of beating the works prototypes. The result was another Triton, its engine tuned for reliability and acceleration out of corners rather than top speed, as the Montju・ circuit had a lot of hairpin bends. Dave's conception was proved right when he and co-rider Rex Butcher won at Barcelona in 1965, enjoying a trouble-free ride against formidable factory opposition. By this time Syd Lawton had lost faith in the complacent British motorcycle industry and switched allegiance to the Italian Aermacchi company with which his name is forever associated. Dave was surprised to discover that the diminutive pushrod singles handled better than a Manx Norton; so he took the logical next step and built a Norton Featherbed-style frame incorporating Aermacchi geometry: the first Dresda had been born. Using the new Dresda frame and a 650cc Triumph engine, he won at Barcelona for the second time, in 1970 with Ian Goddard, and this versatile chassis would later accommodate all manner of multi-cylinder engines from Japan. Hand built by Dave Degens and raced to victory by him and Rex Butcher in the 1965 Barcelona 24 Horas against the combined might of the British and European factory teams, the machine offered here can be said to have started the Dresda legend. Well known motorcycling journalist John Ebbrell tested this Dresda Triton for Motor Cycle magazine's 19th August 1965 edition, riding it from London to Edinburgh and back (copy available). For the test the Triton carried 'temporary' plates ('EYU 993C'); it was later registered as 'ULP 715F'.In 1968 Dave sold the Barcelona Triton. With the demand for Tritons booming, within a few years he needed a bike to use as a pattern for future machines; he bought a Manx rolling chassis, minus its rear wheel, only to discover that it was his Barcelona winner. In 1965 co-rider Rex Butcher had donated a Manx rear wheel to the project and must have reclaimed it somewhere along the line! Specially built for endurance racing, this Dresda Triton consists of a Manx Norton frame wrapped around a Triumph pre-unit racing engine. The engine currently fitted came from the workshop of renowned tuner Alan Dudley Ward, hence the 'DW' stamping. Other notable features include a duplex primary chain conversion; Triumph close-ratio gear set; an additional battery; breather to the primary drive cover; twin Amal GP carburettors; Lucas competition magneto; 19' alloy wheel rims (Dunlop front, Borrani rear); large capacity alloy fuel tank; and a Smiths 10,000rpm tachometer. Dave rode the completed Dresda Triton at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in 2006. Following a period of inactivity, the machine will require re-commissioning and thus is sold strictly as viewed. It is hoped that supporting documentation will be available at time of sale. Key not required.Footnotes:All lots are sold 'as is/where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to bidding. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
