A very rare St. Louis 'Tricolour' carpet ground paperweight, circa 1848 The well formed target-like millefiori arrangement with a central cluster of cobalt-blue canes surrounded by a band of white canes, within an outer band of coral-red canes, 7.2cm diam, 4.8cm high Footnotes: This is one of only a handful of paperweights made by St. Louis to commemorate the 1848 French revolution, with only four examples recorded by Paul Dunlop, The Dictionary of Glass paperweights (2009), p.337. The 'Tricolore' has its origins in the union of the King (white) and Paris (blue and red). Another example was sold by Bonhams on 30 November 2011, lot 168. Horse racing trophy for the 1983 Galtres Stakes at York won by Lord Halifax's Hymettus, in the form of a tureen and cover produced for Gilbey Racing by Sutherland Fine China, royal blue ground, front panel hand painted by K. Hancock, signed, featuring a portrait after George Stubbs of the famous racehorse & stallion Gimcrack being held by his groom, the reverse panel inscribed GALTRES STAKES, WON BY HYMETTUS, OWNED BY LORD HALIFAX, the cover with Yorkshire rose finial, 23 by 27 by 15cm.Condition is good.Hymettus was a bay or brown filly foaled in 1980 at Lord Halifax's Garrowby Stud by the Derby winner Blakeney out of Honeypot Lane. In 1983 when ridden by Lester Piggott she won the Galtres Stakes at York, a listed race for fillies and mares. Her other career victory came in a Haydock maiden. The filly was trained by John Dunlop at Arundel.Please note Lot 34 is the small tureen and cover in the image, not both items.
