David Wilkie Wynfield (British, 1837-1887)The New Curate signed and dated 'D. W. Wynfield/1876' (lower right)oil on canvas88.5 x 140cm (34 13/16 x 55 1/8in).Footnotes:ProvenancePrivate collection, Italy.ExhibitedLondon, Royal Academy, 1876, no. 101.Paris, Universal Exposition, 1878. LiteratureReports of the United States Commissioners to the Paris Universal Exposition, 1878, vol. 1, p. 62.The Art Journal, 1880, New York, D. Appleton & Co. Publishers, vol. 6, p. 121.David Wilkie Wynfield painted and exhibited historical and literary subjects at the Royal Academy from 1859. His great uncle and godfather was the Scottish painter Sir David Wilkie. Wynfield was born in India in 1837 and after his family moved back to London in 1856, he enrolled at the art school run by James Mathew Leigh. He became associated with the St John's Wood Clique, a group of artists who would meet regularly to discuss the ideas explored in their practice. Notably, Philip Hermogenes Calderon, George Dunlop Leslie and Henry Stacy Marks were members. Wynfield became interested in photography and developed a technique of shallow-focus portrait photography. Among those he captured were Frederic Leighton, George Frederic Watts, Simeon Solomon and Alphonse Legros. In the present lot, the artist depicts a welcome tea party for the new curate. The curate, positioned to the left of the composition, slightly back from the table, is politely engaged and inclined forward, as the mother surveys closely. Her two daughters, beautifully attired, admire from the other end of the table. The painting was well received and exhibited not only at the Royal Academy but then at the Paris Exposition two years later, the same year as William Powell Frith's renowned exhibit The Derby Day. A description of the present lot, by the United States Commissioners to the Paris Universal Exposition, reads as follows: 'Among the scenes of ordinary life and family interiors, may be mentioned The New Curate by Mr. D. W. Wynfield, which is an elaborate representation of a very commonplace subject, painted with extreme clearness and precision, but with a certain quiet sense of humor and character'. Another contemporary review of the work - in The Art Journal - confirms the significance of a new curate in an English country village and how in the present depiction, the curate under 'the very penetrating glances of this sweet-looking matron and her bright-eyed daughters...bears the ordeal unflinchingly'. The review continues: 'The chief characteristics of the picture are truthfulness and simplicity; nothing is either exaggerated or out of harmony. Mr. Wynfield has wisely adhered closely to his subject, and the interest is in no way divided, the accessories being as unobtrusive and free from extravagance as the whole subject. A more pleasant and homelike picture of English country life could not readily be seen. Mr. Wynfield's well-earned reputation as a healthy realist painter is thoroughly sustained'.The present lot was engraved by Herbert Bourne (1820-1907) and printed by D. Appleton & Co., New York. The engraving was illustrated in The Graphic, volume XIII, no. 346, 15 July 1876.This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: PP This lot is owned by a private individual. A tool-room copy D-Type Shortnose - a collaboration in 2005 between Jerry Booen (ex-Lotus design engineer/D-Type luminary and David Duffy) Two years in construction utilising, whenever possible, either original or correct period parts Fitted with a period-correct, 3.4-litre, dry-sump unit running triple 45DCO3 Webers and a genuine D-Type, 4-speed all synchro gearbox Aluminium hand-formed bodywork from specially made bucks. Steel frame monocoque/aluminium tub. Correct instrumentation and seating. Bolted-in Roll Hoop (for straightforward removal) Supplied with some old FIA papers, build details and its history file Offered at a fraction of what it would cost to replicate, especially considering the number of priceless and virtually unobtainable original parts used in the build The triple, Le Mans-winning Jaguar D-Type will need little introduction. Following on from the C-Type's victories in 1951 and 1953, the new D-Type, with its state-of-the-art chassis encompassing a central monocoque section, improved rear suspension and a more powerful XK engine, handsomely won the Vingt Quatre Heures du Mans in 1955, 1956 and 1957. Among the most desirable of collectors' cars worldwide, today even the 'customer' cars, let alone the works cars, will cost millions if you can even find one. Therefore, the opportunity to acquire a genuine sixties Jaguar two-seater that has been fully restored, re-engineered and re-clothed in effectively a 'tool-room' copy of D-Type by quality craftsmen, requires serious consideration. This particular, 'Short Nose' recreation, however, is no ordinary replica. In April 2005, two knowledgeable and highly skilled enthusiasts came together to build an exact copy of a Production D-Type. Jerry Booen is an ex-Lotus design engineer and in more recent times heads up the specialist team at 'D-Type Devs', whilst his colleague at the time was David Duffy, who had been a competitor for many years and during the period when this car was being built, owned and raced 'XKD 544'. Jerry had amassed a virtually complete set of drawings for the car and over time, had collected a range of incredibly rare parts using a useful contact in New Zealand. A document in the accompanying history file details the impressive specification of the build which we list here: Engine: 3.4-litres, triple Weber 45DCO3 Carburettors, dry sump Transmission: Genuine D-Type 4-speed, all-synchro box, live rear axle Bodywork: Aluminium panels hand-formed on specially made bucks Monocoque: Steel frame in an aluminium tub Suspension: Wishbone front, trailing arms rear at the rear with torsion bars Brakes: Plessey pump powered system with 6-pot/4-pot discs Roll Hoop: Bolted in to make removal straightforward Interior: 'Correct' instrumentation and seating Wheels: Original Dunlop alloys, 6.00/6.50 on 5-inch rims The result of all of this is a highly impressive, both technically and cosmetically, 'tool room copy' of the iconic D-type. Where possible, either original or period-correct parts were rebuilt and used, including the engine, gearbox, rear axle, wheels and carburettors. As this was between 2005-2007, Jerry and David did manage to find some original parts, a task getting more difficult with the passing years. Where period parts were not available, remanufactured D-Type spares including the front suspension were bought from historic racing specialists. In cases where parts needed to be made from scratch, original drawings were used as was the case for the chassis frame, brakes, monocoque and bodywork. After completion, FIA papers were granted and the identity of a 1962 Jaguar E-Type was used for the road registration (Chassis 860552). The accompanying history file includes details of all this as well as the old FIA papers. Naturally, it's finished in British Racing Green with the correct Apple Green interior, both seats are fitted with Willans full harnesses, and the car sits on original Dunlop alloys wearing a set of period Cinturatos. After the obligatory shakedown and road tests, the car was passed onto a well-known collector who owned it for the following 7-8 years. In more recent times this special car has formed part of a large collection and an approved roll cage (bolted-in to make removal straightforward) has been professionally fitted expanding the number of options available. Offered at a fraction of what it would cost to replicate, especially considering the number of priceless and virtually unobtainable original parts used in the build, this special homage to the iconic D-Type looks remarkable value. It would be welcome at prestigious events anywhere and can offer enjoyment and pride of ownership both on the road, or with some further investment, as a glorious race car to grace the circuits of Europe. Superbly finished D-Type 'Long Nose' replica based on a Realm kit expertly re-engineered to very high standards Indicating less than 400 miles use (atoc) with invoices supporting a full engine rebuild in 2014 Over £60,000 in receipts from 2010 to date, recording a fully documented build with no expense spared Offered with a V5c (registered as a 1969 Jaguar historic vehicle). Ready to be enjoyed This superb re-creation respectfully and elegantly pays homage to one of the greatest British sports cars of all time Realm Engineering of Honeybourne in Worcestershire has built up a fine reputation over almost four decades for its RAM recreations. In particular, their Jaguar D-Types have benefitted from chassis design input by Reynard Racing resulting in greater strength and ultimately better road-holding. After a three-hour stint behind the wheel of a Realm D-Type, Sir Jack Brabham commented: "That's a damn sight better than the original!" Offered here we have a very handsome Realm Engineering-sourced, D-Type 'Long Nose' replica, registered as a 1969 Jaguar and finished to an incredibly high standard. Documents within the history folder indicate that a previous owner purchased this D-Type replica as a part-complete project in 2010. Not long after his purchase, the partly finished car was delivered to a local Jaguar specialist to be stripped down and fully rebuilt. Eyewateringly-large invoices hide within the car's history folder telling the story of a thorough breakdown and rebuild using, where necessary, many new parts. The complete Sage Green and Apple Green leather interior, carpets and D-Type Dunlop-style wheels were sourced from Realm Engineering and a well-designed stainless steel inlet manifold and exhaust system were also fitted. With most mechanical aspects complete, the car was then sent to a specialist body shop where the bodywork panels were assessed, re-manufactured where necessary and refinished to, what can only be described as, a remarkable standard. Shortly after the project appeared to be near completion, the decision was made to have the engine professionally rebuilt again with detailed invoices on file and, in fact, a quick tally up of the invoices from between 2010 and 2015 suggest a spend of over £64,000! Today, this wonderful D-Type replica presents extremely well and is finished with admirable attention to detail in every area. The history folder is replete with relevant invoices outlining works completed, old MOTs and the current V5c (historic vehicle). This super Jaguar re-creation respectfully and elegantly pays homage to one of the greatest British sports cars of all time. Click here for more information This car was consigned by Steven Keen. Revered 1,588cc engine producing an impressive 108bhp, the Twin Cam could comfortably exceed 110mph, with Dunlop disc brakes all round Just 1,801 Twin Cams were built in the more desirable Roadster configuration In stunning Ash Green paintwork, believed matching-numbers and fully restored using mostly all original parts Accompanied by a (rare) hard-top and a plethora of paperwork, invoices, and photos In splendid condition with very good panel gaps and even retains the rare and correct sill trims Conceived as a replacement for the traditional 'T'-Series MGs and clad in a curvaceous aerodynamic body, plus benefiting from independent suspension and rack and pinion steering, the MGA proved an instant hit, selling 13,000 units in its first full year of production. Immensely popular though it was, the 'A' faced stiff competition from the larger-engined Triumph TR3 and Austin-Healey 100/6. Coaxing more power from the standard engine was becoming increasingly difficult, so development concentrated on a twin-overhead-camshaft cylinder head for the B-Series block. Conceived at Cowley by BMC engineer Gerald Palmer and introduced in 1958, the new 1,588cc engine did not disappoint, producing an impressive 108bhp at 6,700rpm. Considerably faster than the standard MGA, and with a pleasing 'rasp' to the engine note, the Twin Cam could comfortably exceed 110mph, and to cope with the increased performance Dunlop 103/4" disc brakes were fitted all round, and Dunlop centre-lock wheels adopted. MG issued a small pink leaflet entitled 'Getting the best from your MGA Twin Cam' which displayed in large letters, "PLEASE READ BEFORE DRIVING". No doubt this was because the car was being used by owners who did not understand the requirements of, what after all, was a road-going racing car. A high price discouraged sales, however, and the model was dropped after just two years. Production totalled just 2,111 examples, with 1,801 cars being in the more desirable and quintessentially British 'wind-in-your-hair' Roadster configuration. Understandably, today the Twin Cam is one of the most sought-after of post-war MG sports cars. The car presented here is a 1958 MGA Twin Cam Roadster, chassis YD3/996, in attractive Ash Green paintwork with a Biscuit interior and a Black soft-top. Believed to be a matching numbers example (although Abingdon did not bother to keep track of any number other than the VIN/chassis!), it was originally delivered new to the US, as were the majority of Twin Cams. Reassuringly though, our vendor contacted the MGA Register Group, sending them a photo of the engine number tag (photo is also listed here) and they confirmed, having checked their database, there were no duplicates for engine number 16G/U/631, also stating that from a Register perspective, the engine number plate is complete and looks correct for this specific Twin Cam. Furthermore, from a extract of engine numbers the Register Group have on record, they were able to say (in writing) that the engine tags appears original and well within the usual factory variances (i.e. bodies and engines were just picked at will to create cars, so not sequential). The car was repatriated to Lisburn, NI by a Mr Laurence Brush, a real MG aficionado, where, between 1991 and 1995, it underwent a ground-up, fully documented restoration using mostly original parts, including panels (costing c £20,000 with all receipts available). These painstaking efforts were rewarded with a win at a high-profile 'Benson & Hedges' Concours event. It was subsequently sold to a Mr Bryan Field in Southern Ireland, then later to his friend Tom Cooney (who had always admired the car) of near Waterford, who owned it between 2011-2015. Our vendor, a real classic car enthusiast, who also owns a 'big' Healey, bought the car in 2015, driving it all the way back home from near Waterford to the East Midlands, stating ''it just purred all the way home.'' He and his partner have enjoyed the car immensely, using it as intended but only on dry days, and to attend the Goodwood Revival, whilst dressed in full period military attire. The car is accompanied by a (rare) hard-top, matching tonneau cover and a plethora of paperwork, invoices, photos, books, workshop memoranda, a technical/engineering book and numerous MGA books. The little MG is in simply splendid condition, not Concours (but with the potential to be again), with very good panel gaps and even has the rare and correct sill trims, which are often missing. It is said to drive and perform just as a healthy Twin Cam should, always being well-maintained and utilising Evans waterless coolant, and will easily keep up with today's traffic - not bad for a 1958 1.6-litre sportscar! An MGA Twin Cam is highly prized today, especially the Roadster, and one in this sort of condition with such a cherished ownership history, even more so.
