Time Present opened on 23rd May 1968 at the Royal Court Theatre. It starred Osborne's fourth wife Jill Bennett, and successfully transferred to the Duke of York's Theatre in the West End in July. Bennett's performance as Pamela won her the award for Best Actress of the Year. See also note to lot 33. A Sense of Detachment opened at the Royal Court Theatre on 4th December 1972. According to Daily Telegraph Frank Marcus it included 'the most explicitly-worded accounts of sexual perversions yet uttered on the London stage, thus driving a large number of shocked theatregoers to the exits' (Heilpern, p. 376). It received disasterous reviews, and with the likes of Tom Stoppard, Carol Churchill and David Hare on the ascendant Osborne's future as a playwright was publicly questioned.Qty: 2

The Ivan Kessell Collection1914 Swift 3½hp RoadsterRegistration no. AF 1423Frame no. 3791014 79LEngine no. 7814Possibly the sole survivor of its typePresent ownership since 1979An older restorationRequires recommissioningThe Swift marque's origins date back to the turbulent formative years of the British cycle and motorcycle industries when it emerged, together with Ariel, as part of the Dunlop group of companies. The older of the two, Ariel may trace its roots back to 1893 when John Griffiths, previously engaged in the pneumatic tyre business, set up a new company to obtain the distribution rights to a wide range of cycle makes. This was The John Griffiths Cycle Corporation Ltd, which, among other activities, marketed cycles under the Dunlop and Ariel brand names, the latter having been registered by the short-lived Guest & Barrow company that same year. When the original Dunlop Pneumatic Tyre Company bought back The Dunlop Cycle Company from Griffiths in 1897, it was decided that a new name for their reacquired cycle business would be needed, 'Ariel' being chosen. Like the Dunlop branded cycles, the Ariels were manufactured in Birmingham by the Cycle Components Manufacturing Co Ltd. Also in 1897, Dunlop had acquired an interest in The Coventry Machinists Co Ltd, which was reorganised as The Swift Cycle Co Ltd at premises in Cheylesmore, Coventry. Thus it was that both Ariel and Swift became owned by Dunlop, and the two companies would go on to be closely associated. Both firms commenced motor manufacture with a tricycle, and both sourced the engines from De Dion Bouton.Ariel's first powered two-wheeler was exhibited at the National Show in November 1901. The newcomer was powered by a Minerva engine built under license by Cycle Components Manufacturing, which was supplying both Ariel and Swift. A few years later Ariel took control of Components Ltd's motorcycle business. Swift's first motorcycle arrived in 1904 and after 1910 there was a 3½hp (490cc) model in the range. Swift, like Ariel, also offered models powered by the famous White & Poppe 'T-head' sidevalve engine. In the meantime, Swift had become increasingly active as a car manufacturer, and all motorcycle production had stopped by 1915.The Swift offered here features a conventional sidevalve engine and a three-speed gearbox, the latter newly introduced for 1914, together with chain-cum-belt transmission. An older restoration, this ultra-rare Coventry-built motorcycle - possibly the sole survivor of its type - has been on long-term museum display and will require recommissioning, or possibly more extensive restoration, before further use and thus is sold strictly as viewed. Accompanying paperwork includes old/current V5C documents and an old-style continuation logbook (issued 1958) listing Ivan Kessell as owner from March 1979. This logbook also states that the date of first registration was 2nd April 1915.Key not requiredFootnotes:All lots are sold 'as is/where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to bidding.REQUEST A TRANSPORT QUOTEPlease click the link to request a transport quote from our recommended transport company, Moving Motorcycles. To request a UK or European shipping quote - Moving MotorcyclesTo request an International shipping quote - ShippioThis Lot will be auctioned on Sunday 13 October starting at 11am GMT.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
c.1968 Norton 745cc P11 ReplicaRegistration no. YRD 58FFrame no. 107940Engine no. B20 107940Norton were part of the AMC group from 1953, but continued to operate independently until, in 1962 it was decided to close the Bracebridge Street factory, and transfer the manufacture of Norton to the main AMC factory at Plumstead. Possibly because of that, at some point, the management considered the cross-fertilisation of engines and frames, coming up with the new 750 Atlas engines and Matchless frames. A limited number of 750 Atlas engines/Matchless frames had appeared late in 1963 in some export bikes, but the combination was not available in the UK. In 1964, Norton announced the Atlas model, which utilised the tried and trusted Featherbed frame. However, the Atlas/Matchless combination became established as a model, initially as a Matchless (G33), then as a Norton (N15). Later, came the P11, built mainly for the US market as a street scrambler, styled as desert racer, but with lights and road equipment.YRD 58F has been recreated by previous owner as a replica of the P11 model. Based on a matching numbers machine, it incorporates many believed-genuine P11 components. Particular attention is drawn to the hubs, folding footrests, oil tank, mudguards, exhaust system, handlebars, and Dunlop rims. The present owner has used the Norton occasionally, and advises that it runs and rides very well. Taxation class is Historic Vehicle, and the bike is presently on SORN. Documentation comprises a current V5C, an old V5C, an old V5, and a few receipts.Offered with keyFootnotes:All lots are sold 'as is/where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to bidding.REQUEST A TRANSPORT QUOTEPlease click the link to request a transport quote from our recommended transport company, Moving Motorcycles. To request a UK or European shipping quote - Moving MotorcyclesTo request an International shipping quote - ShippioThis Lot will be auctioned on Sunday 13 October starting at 11am GMT.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
1974 Ducati 750SSRegistration no. VWT 91NFrame no. DM750SS*075286Engine no. 075011 DM750.1•One of only 24 delivered new in the UK•Known ownership history•Restored condition•Present ownership since 2011•Offered from an important private collectionOnly 401 round-case Ducati 750SS production models were manufactured by the Ducati factory between January and March 1974. Only three 1973 prototype models are believed to have survived, all of which went to the USA. The production machines are understood to have been built in two batches of 200, the first tranche assembled between 2nd and 10th January 1974, and the second between late January and March. Only 24 are known to have been brought into the UK in 1974 by the importers, Coburn & Hughes. This is one of the original 24 UK bikes imported during 1974, although it is not possible to determine from which of the two production runs it originates. Its numbers are '075286' (frame) and '075011' (engine) (listed (in error) with the numbers transposed in Ian Falloon's The Book on the Ducati 750SS Round Case 1974). 'VWT 91N' was first registered on 6th September 1974 to Allan Jefferies Motorcycles of Shipley, West Yorkshire, who had acquired it (and possibly at least one other) from the importers. Unfortunately, the paper records of Allan Jefferies Motorcycles (relating to that year) have been lost or destroyed so there is no corroborative record of the Ducati's delivery and subsequent sale apart from entries on copy registration documents from the DVLA in the UK. In February 1975, the Ducati was acquired by the London Motorcycle Centre and, it is believed, was raced during that season (it is not known by whom) before being sold to Rodney Gordon in January 1976. In all probability the London Motorcycle Centre replaced it with the newer 1975 900SS which had just been released. Rodney Gordon and family members used it for the next 10 years as a road bike before it fell into disrepair. It was sold on in 1986 to a Simon Cauty. Nothing is known about its time in his ownership but it is reported by its subsequent owner, John Fallon (later of Made in Italy Motorcycles), that it was incomplete and a non-runner. The Ducati was effectively in storage at this time. In February 1991 John sold it to the previous owner as a rolling chassis (frame, engine and cycle parts - see images in history file). In October/November 1995 an engine rebuild was carried out by Steve Wynne of Sports Motorcycles Racing Limited. Works undertaken comprised the following:•Rebuilt cylinder heads, including new valves, valve guides/seals, valve seats, repairs to exhaust threads, modified rockers for extended guide seals•New (believed to be Staschl) racing con-rods and big-end assembly•New V2 pistons, rebore and hone•New main bearings•Imola cams•New first gear and slider, and layshaft•Renewal of all ancillary consumablesThe worn primary drive gears noted by Wynn were replaced by the then owner, who estimates the total cost of the restoration to have been in excess of £30,000.Between March 2010 and May 2011 (and in consultation with the Ducati authority Ian Falloon) a chassis rebuild, refinishing of bodywork and frame, and all non-engine work had been carried out to return the Ducati to original specification. The engine was set up and first run on 23rd May 2011 (it started first kick). Non-original cycle parts include the following:•1973 750SS fork sliders (which had callipers sited behind the fork legs when axle inserted from the correct r/h side (otherwise identical to 1974 sliders)•All glassfibre is replacement (and better than original)Seat foam and covering is replacement (and better than original)Rubber breather bellows to flapper valve•Fuel pipe: new Cavis Benz (13x7mm)•Tyres: new Japanese Dunlop TT100s•Hydraulic hoses and fittings are new modern stainless steel•Lucas RITA ignition kit dating from 1976 (original contemporaneous replacement for OE points, etc)As presented here the Ducati displays the following notable features: Borrani wheel rims stamped '4777' (front and rear); JOD headlamp glass; Marzocchi front forks; Scarab front brake callipers; Lockheed rear calliper; and Dell'Orto PHM 40A carburettors. Accompanying documentation includes the following:•Sports Motorcycles engine rebuild invoice of November 1995 (£2,943)•Images 'as found' and post restoration•Well used Ducati technical sheet with some handwritten annotation for racing•Letter from Nick Jefferies of Allan Jefferies Motorcycles dated October 1993•Email (copy) to Ian Falloon regarding the availability (or non-availability) of original componentsThe machine also comes with an old style V5 document (all other V5s and old logbooks on file are photocopies). Our vendor, its next owner, acquired the 750SS in July 2011, since when it has been kept as part of his important private collection of motorcycles. Unused since purchase, it is offered for recommissioning to a greater or lesser extent and is sold strictly as viewed.According to renowned Ducati authority Ian Falloon: 'I know the bike well as (the vendor) consulted me regarding its restoration after he bought it... It's not a preproduction model, just a very early engine number. I would just like to add that the restoration is very accurate, with excellent attention to detail.' Very high praise indeed.Footnotes:All lots are sold 'as is/where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to bidding.REQUEST A TRANSPORT QUOTEPlease click the link to request a transport quote from our recommended transport company, Moving Motorcycles. To request a UK or European shipping quote - Moving MotorcyclesTo request an International shipping quote - ShippioThis Lot will be auctioned on Sunday 13 October starting at 11am GMT.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Registration No: KRX 599H Chassis No: PRH4567 MOT: November 20241 of just 374 Phantom VIs manufacturedSupplied new to Mrs Khashoggi, wife of Saudi businessman and arms dealer Adnan KhashoggiUsed to transport members of the Royal Family as part of Princess Diana's funeral cortègeFully repainted shortly after entering into current ownership in 2019Well maintained throughout the current ownership with head gaskets replaced at the start of this yearOffered with a history file including the RREC factory recordsBy far the most expensive car that money could buy when launched in 1968, the Rolls-Royce Phantom VI remained in production for twelve years (albeit the final few examples were not finished until 1991/1992 due to the model’s handbuilt nature). Notable as the last Rolls-Royce to employ a separate chassis, the majority were bodied by Mulliner Park Ward as seven-seater limousines. Though, a hearse and even convertible versions were constructed (the latter conceived by the Italian Carrozzeria, Frua). Equipped with independent front suspension, a leaf-sprung back axle and four-wheel drum brakes, the Phantom VI was all about passenger comfort and boasted the world’s first dual zone air-conditioning system. Powered by a 6230cc (later 6750cc) OHV V8 engine allied to automatic transmission, gearing was chosen such that it could be driven at anything from walking pace to 100mph. Customers were encouraged to tax the ingenuity of Rolls-Royce’s in-house craftsmen to the extent that very few, if any, of the 374 completed were to standard specification. This very early example of the Phantom VI boasts both Royal Family and film history. The new car order form, dated 16th January 1968, shows it was initially prepared for a M. Saady Esq. of London and was initially due to be finished in Brown with Beige interior upholstery. The order was amended, however, with PRH4567 then supplied new to Mrs Khashoggi, wife of Saudi businessman and arms dealer Adnan Khashoggi. Among the richest men in the world, the Khashoggi assets encompassed: twelve homes, fully staffed at all times, including a 10,000-acre ranch in Kenya, an estate in Marbella and houses in London, Paris, Cannes, Madrid, Monte Carlo and Manhattan. He had a stable of Arabian horses and 200 exotic animals, 100 limousines, a personal airline of three jets, and a fleet of three superyachts, including the $75m Nabila which was used in the James Bond film, ‘Never Say Never Again’.Finished when new in Masons Black with 23-carat Gold fine lines, the interior was trimmed in Beige hide front upholstery with cloth rear and Cumberland Stone carpeting to the rear. The factory specification also included Dunlop tyres, Sundym glass, hazard warning lights, safety belts to the front, air-conditioning, stainless steel sills and wheel arches, electric windows, electric division, and full-width foldaway leather occasional seats. Automatic transmission and power steering help to manage the power of the 6230cc V8 engine. It is unknown how long the Khashoggi family retained the Phantom, but afterward continued to have a fascinating history and was used to transport members of the Royal Family as part of Princess Diana's funeral cortège, and took princes William and Harry from the Royal Train to Althorp for their mother's burial, while registered 'PBC 999'.Thereafter used in the film 'The Queen' starring Dame Helen Mirren and 'The Queen and I' with David Walliams, the Phantom thus boasts fantastic provenance and previous film appearances. Most recently entering into the ownership of a specialist funeral directors through a H&H auction in 2019, the Phantom was provided with a full repaint in 2019 in the original colour, and has benefitted from regular maintenance throughout their ownership to ensure reliability. Amassing some 13,000 miles since their purchase in 2016, the total mileage on the odometer is now 91,000 miles. Serviced seven times during their ownership, the Phantom has further benefitted from new head gaskets earlier this year; a new fuel pump, uprated valve stem seals and heads skimmed last year; and significant mechanical attention/improvement in 2021.Offered with a history file that includes the RREC chassis records, a collection of previous MOTs, original handbook, full maintenance spreadsheet for during the vendor's ownership, sundry paperwork, and a current V5C document. A fantastic opportunity to secure a rare and opulent car with a wonderful history, and offered at what we feel is a sensible guide price. Registration No: YSU 288 Chassis No: T838180DN MOT: Exempt1 of just 104 XK150 S 3.4 litre Drophead Coupes made (in both LHD and RHD)Supplied new to E. Schiller Esq of Illinois and later resident in Germany for many years before being repatriated in 1988Treated to a bare metal renovation and conversion to RHD by The Vehicle Restoration Co and subsequently improved by renowned XK specialist, Twyford Moors (engine overhaul / conversion to unleaded, interior re-trimmed etc)Purchased by the vendor from JD Classics in 2011 for £99,000 and subject to some £27,000 worth of fettling / maintenance sinceThe final iteration of the XK sportscar line, the XK150 was introduced in May 1957. While its use of independent torsion-bar front suspension, a 'live' leaf-sprung rear axle and rack-and-pinion steering mirrored the practice of its XK140 predecessor, the new model benefited from the option of all-round Dunlop disc brakes (though, in practice very few – if any - cars were delivered with drum brakes). Stylistically, the newcomer was brought up-to-date with less ostentatious curves and a larger, wrap-around single piece windscreen. With the E-type still very much under development, Jaguar was keen to sustain the sporting reputation that a remarkable five Le Mans victories (1951, 1953, 1955, 1956 and 1957) had earned it. Initially powered by a 3442cc derivative of the marque's race-proven DOHC straight-six engine, the XK150 could be specified with an enlarged 3781cc unit from late 1959 onwards. Available in Standard, Special Equipment or 'S' tune, the latter high-performance package comprised a Harry Weslake-modified cylinder head, more aggressive camshaft profiling, high compression pistons and triple SU carburettors. Like its lesser siblings, the XK150 ‘S’ could be had in Fixed-Head Coupe, Open Two-Seater (Roadster) or Drophead Coupe guises. With a claimed 250hp on tap, the 'S' 3.4 Litre cars were reputedly capable of 0-60mph in 7.4 seconds and 132mph. Among the rarest of all XK variants, total (LHD and RHD) XK150 ‘S’ 3.4 Drophead Coupe production is thought to have amounted to just 104 cars. Unsurprisingly, survivors are highly prized by collectors. According to its accompanying Jaguar Heritage Trust Certificate, chassis T838180DN was completed on 5th March 1959 and supplied new to E. Schiller of Oak Park, Illinois. Initially finished in Carmen Red, the XK150 S is understood to have migrated to Germany (possibly in the hands of a US serviceman) not long afterwards. Repatriated during 1988 by Peter Cutler, the 2+2-seater was then entrusted to The Vehicle Restoration Co of West Sussex for a bare metal repaint, conversion to right-hand drive and sundry other works. Sold to Shell Oil executive Alan Hunt by Twyford Moors in 1998, he commissioned the renowned XK specialist to retrim the interior, install an alternator, uprate the cooling system (re-cored radiator, Kenlowe fan, alloy expansion tank), plumb-in a facet fuel pump and regulator plus fit new 6 x 15 chrome wire wheels and tyres. Mr Hunt subsequently had them thoroughly overhaul the original engine (including conversion to unleaded) and improve the hood. Humphrey Bunyan of The Classic Car Workshop refurbished the front suspension and further upgraded the Drophead Coupe with a Getrag five-speed manual gearbox, replacement fuel tank and SPAX shock absorbers all round. Registered to Alexander Krahe of Twyford Moors thereafter, ‘YSU 288’ entered the current ownership via JD Classics for £99,140 in December 2011 at which time it was said to have covered just 9,000 post-restoration miles. Enjoyed by the vendor for numerous trips around the UK and into Europe, he has employed the services of Paul Roach Jaguar Ltd to maintain and fettle the XK150 S spending close to £27,000 over the past thirteen years. As well as servicing the 2+2-seater, the Acton, nr Sudbury based firm has rewired it, installed electric power steering, re-bushed the suspension, replaced the rear springs, overhauled the engine’s bottom end and renewed various back axle seals. Old MOT certificates on file suggest that the Drophead Coupe has covered some 22,000 miles since returning to the UK. Starting readily upon inspection and proving a doddle to manoeuvre with its power steering and five-speed gearbox, the Jaguar now presents as an older restoration. The paintwork has aged in places and the brightwork is imperfect. However, the seller admits he bought ‘YSU 288’ to drive rather than polish. Able to boast matching chassis, engine and body numbers, this genuine XK150 S 3.4 litre Drophead Coupe is offered for sale with V5C Registration Document and history file. A tempting proposition indeed. For more information, please contact: Damian Jones damian.jones@handh.co.uk 07855 493737
