Dean Gaisford's 'Magnum Opus' With Important Correspondence etc., included Gaisford (Dean Thomas)ÿEtymologicon Magnum, seu verius Lexicon saipissime vocabulorum origines indagans ex pluribus lexicis scholiastis et grammaticis anonymi cuisdam opera concinnatum. Lg. thick folio Oxford (e Typographeo Academico) 1848. Frontis fac-simile, engd. vignette on title, strongly bound cont. hf. calf, raised bands. With the Den's bookplate. The Etymologicum Magnum, compiled in Constantinople c 1150, is the largest Byzantine lexicon, collating and expanding the works of many previous scholars.ÿ It was first printed at Venice in 1499.ÿ Gaisford?s work, the fruit of much careful scholarship, remains the most recent complete edition. ÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿ This copy has tipped in at back: table giving details of print run and costs, also a review and an obituary of Gaisford. Pasted at front: 1. 10 Dec. 1847.ÿ Note from B.P. Symons, Vice-Chancellor of Oxford, offering Gaisford on behalf of the delegates of the OUP an honorarium of œ1000. 2. Draft reply from Gaisford declining the offer, suggesting he might be given 20 free copies instead, and commenting on the proposed price of the book. 3. 16 Dec. 1847.ÿ Note from Symons agreeing his proposal. 4. 15 June 1855 Note from Symons expressing the delegates? gratitude for Gaisford?s work (he had died on 2 June). Enclosures: ú Letter to Gaisford dated 22 March 1817 from Edward Everett, the 23-year-old Professor Greek at Harvard who was then studying at G”ttingen, discussing German projects to publish a text of the Etymologicum, and reporting in detail on the experiments of Carl Friedrich Sicker to unroll some of the papyri discovered at Herculaneum (he destroyed several in the process).ÿ Everett (1794-1865) continued his brilliant and multi-faceted career as politician, pastor, educator, diplomat and orator.ÿ Today he is best remembered as the featured speaker at the dedication of the military cemetery at Gettysburg in 1863; his learned oration, lasting over two hours, has been somewhat overshadowed by Lincoln?s 271-word address that succeeded it. ú M/ss of a long (11 pp, folio) discourse on Gaisford?s Etymologicum, published in the G”ttingen Literary Advertiser, 6 Nov. 1848. ú Draft petition of Gaisford to the Council of State of the Duke of Brunswick, 23 July 1846, requesting the transmission to England of the MS at Wolfenb?ttel of the Etymologicon Gudianum, on the grounds that the edition published at Leipzig is defective and he would like to consult the original as part of his research for a new edition of the Etymologicon Magnum. úÿ ?The advantages of a liberal education.?ÿ MS page of verses ?by Thomas Gaisford A.D. 179-.? ú Draft letter from Gaisford, 24 Oct [1843] wishing to purchase a copy of the Lexicon Etymologicum, listed in the catalogue of the Royal Library at Naples. ú Letter to Thomas Gaisford (junior) from Paul Butler of Down Ampney, Cricklade, 8 Aug 1872, enclosing preceding item (?) ú Draft proposal by Gaisford for a second edition of his Suidae Lexicon (2 vols, 1834).

CANADA – GEORGE IIIManuscript declaration headed 'The Humble Address of the Lieutenant Governor, Council and House of Assembly of Your Majesty's Province of Nova Scotia' to 'The Kings Most Excellent Majesty', congratulating him on the birth of '...the Prince Royal and Heir Apparent to Your Majesty's Dominions... an event so important and interesting to the liberties of mankind...', signed by Jonathan Belcher (Lieutenant Governor), John Collier (Speaker for the Council) and William Nesbitt (Speaker for the Assembly), dated and amended in another hand, docketed on verso, one page on a bifolium, some creases, small tears, dust staining and other marks, particularly on verso where folded and exposed, folio (312 x 202mm.), Halifax, 28 April 1763Footnotes:'AN EVENT SO IMPORTANT AND INTERESTING TO THE LIBERTIES OF MANKIND': Congratulations from the British colony of Nova Scotia on the birth of the future George IV. Within the space of a few months, George III had not only gained an heir to the throne but had also gained French colonial possessions in North America through the Treaty of Paris of February 1763, which formally ended the conflict between the two countries. Later in the year the Royal Proclamation forbade all settlement westwards, something which would lead to significant disputes between Britain and the colonies and thereby sowing the seeds of the American Revolution. The 'Prince Royal' was born on 12 August 1762 so it had taken some time for the news to reach Nova Scotia and for the legislature to issue their congratulations, just four months before the birth of the King's second son, Frederick Duke of York, in August 1763. Nova Scotia retained it's loyalty to the crown throughout the revolution and became a haven for loyalist settlers. The document is signed from the recently-created capital Halifax by the Lieutenant Governor Jonathan Belcher (1710-1776), son of the eponymous Governor of New Hampshire, Massachusetts and New Jersey. The first formally-trained law officer in Nova Scotia, he established the Supreme Court, promoted an English-style legal system and is credited with having drafted the laws passed by Nova Scotia's first and subsequent legislators. Belcher held the post of Governor from November 1761 until September 1763. 'Modern-day Nova Scotia owes much to this competent, proficient 'Chief of the North,' the founder of its legal system and father of its tradition of representative government' (belcherfoundation.org).This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ** VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

CHANCELLOR OF THE EXCHEQUER A Battersea oval enamel plaque, c.1753-56, printed in pale manganese with a half-length portrait of a Chancellor of the Exchequer in full wig, lace cravat and elaborate embroidered jacket, the plaque 8.5cm high, in a modern frame. The identity of the subject is discussed by Bernard Watney, 'The Chancellor on a Battersea Enamel', ECC Trans Vol 7, pt 1 (1968). W B Honey suggested that the print was the work of two hands, the head by Ravenet and the costume by Hancock. See The Connoisseur, Vol LXXIV, 1932. Watney concluded that the subject was perhaps Henry Pelham after an engraving by John Hinton; however, more recent suggestion has been made that the likeness more closely resembles Henry Boyle, 1st Earl of Shannon and Speaker of the Irish House of Commons from 1733 to 1753, as depicted in a mezzotint engraved by John Brooks and sold by Thomas Jefferys and William Herbert. Provenance: sold (as Henry Pelham) Phillips, 6th June 2001, lot 210.

APRIL 1831 REFORM A rare pearlware mug, c.1831, printed in puce to two sides with a figural cartoon titled 'A Thundering Castigation from the Woolsack', flanking a crown and baton resting on a tasselled cushion, 9.5cm. This cartoon derives from the satire of the same title published by John Fairburn on 12th April 1813, which depicts the mace-wielding speaker addressing dissenters of reform.

Los 899

A carnival model organ and drum automaton, fitted with electric light bulbs and painted in bright enamel colours, with tin roof. Height 102 cm, width 107 cm, depth 50 cm. CONDITION REPORT: When the item is plugged in the majority of the lights do light up. The electric motor also runs and this operates the two drums and the drummer. We have not had any sound out of the organ but we do not really know how this operates. The speaker at the rear of the cabinet does have wiring to it and there is a Jack plug on the end of this wiring. Perhaps the sound would have been from a recording rather than through the actual organ itself. We think that this is probably the case.
