FAWCELL (MILLICENT GARRETT)Group of six autograph letters, one secretarial letter and one postcard signed ('Millicent Fawcett' or 'M G Fawcett') to various recipients, the majority concerning speaking arrangements, including three to Maurice H. Richmond, President of the Oxford Union ('...I feel greatly honoured by your kind invitation to address the Oxford Union on the subject to Women's Suffrage..'), proposing the resolution 'That in the opinion of this House the time has come when the Government should be urged to remove the electoral disabilities of women'), and asking for the order of proceedings ('...Shall I be the opening speaker?...') 15 pages, dust-staining and marks, 8vo (178 x 114mm.), Hawse End, Keswick and 2 Gower Street, London, 16 October [19]08 onwards; various printed handbills for the London Society for Women's Suffrage (Why Working Women Want the Vote); pamphlet The Work of a Women's Association during an Election... by Caroline B. Bridgeman [1909], etc.Footnotes:'IN THE OPINION OF THIS HOUSE THE TIME HAS COME WHEN THE GOVERNMENT SHOULD BE URGED TO REMOVE THE ELECTORAL DISABILITIES OF WOMEN'.Dame Millicent Garrett Fawcett (1847-1929), a longtime feminist and reformer, was attracted to the cause of women's suffrage after hearing John Stuart Mill speak in 1865. In 1867 she joined the committee of the newly founded London National Society for Women's Suffrage, founded by Lydia Becker. A leading figure in the suffrage movement, she took part in the formation of the non-militant National Union of Women's Suffrage Societies in 1897, becoming its president in 1907, a body which preferred to act within the law by using conventional political means to achieve the vote. She retired from the presidency in 1918 following the adoption of women's suffrage (albeit limited) that year. The NUWSS later became the National Union of Societies for Equal Citizenship and campaigned on issues such as equal pay, pensions and the rights of mothers and widows. Her call here for the debate at the Oxford Union to discuss the 'electoral disabilities of women' refers to her lecture of the same name first delivered on tour in 1871 at the New Hall, Tavistock. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

FORD (ISABELLA)Enamel badge promoting the 'National Union of Women's Suffrage Societies', in red, white and green, gilt metal and enamel, the reverse with original pin fittings, no maker's mark, 23mm. diameter, attached to original red, white and green grosgrain ribbon, 90mm. long, held in a velvet-lined box, early twentieth-centuryFootnotes:The NUWSS, also known as the suffragists, was founded in 1897 under the leadership of Millicent Fawcett and renamed the National Union of Societies for Equal Citizenship in 1919. It advocated achieving representation by peaceful democratic means rather than through the militant tactics of the suffragettes.Isabella Ford was born in Leeds and spent all her life there, helping to found the Leeds Independent Labour Party and the Leeds Women's Suffrage Society. She wrote many pamphlets on social reform and suffrage, and was an accomplished speaker. In 1903 she became the first woman to speak at the annual conference of the Labour Representation Committee (later the British Labour Party), probably making her the first woman to speak at any major party conference. She was also among the Women's Suffrage delegation, with Millicent Garrett Fawcett and Emmeline Pankhurst, that went to see the Prime Minister, Henry Campbell-Bannerman, on 19 May 1906 (see http://leedswomenshistory.co.uk/isabellafordfull.php).Provenance: Isabella Ormston Ford (1855-1924), writer, influential campaigner for socialism, trade unions and women's suffrage; given by her to someone in her service, the great grandmother of a subsequent owner; purchased at auction, c.2018.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

1970 Mercedes 220 Saloon (W115) LHD California Import - Odometer reading 58,000 miles- Low owner example - California import with large maintenance history Succeeding the W110 Fintail, the W114 and W115 were designed by Paul Bracq (previously responsible for the Grosser 600) and models distinguished by different engine sizes and subsequently names. Now renowned for being a stylish 1970s cruiser which combined bullet-proof build quality with elegant design, the 220s are now being widely appreciated and thus fluctuating in price. ANM 817H is a California import, sporting an automatic 4-speed transmission and is finished in stunning Horizon blue paintwork which has a deep sheen to it as well as stunning blue leather interior. Furthermore, it still has its original stainless steel wheel trims that are complemented by four white wall tyres adding to the period look of the car - these have been recently changed only 200 miles ago according to the vendor. Overall, the vendor assures us that the headlining is in great shape but the sun visors could do with a refurb. They also mentioned that the air conditioning unit is currently uninstalled and requires a refurb / reinstallation but will come with the car upon sale. From what the vendor tells us there is plenty of background to the car's beginnings after being supplied new to a Doctor in Redding, California then on to a Mercedes collector in Burbank. This last US owner maintained the car regardless of expense with receipts of a full engine rebuild in 1998 at 47,000 miles at a cost of nearly $6,000. He also commissioned an exclusive burbank upholstery specialist to completely recover the interior seating in period / pattern correct leather. It originally came with m-tex vinyl which although unmarked he didn't think it did the car justice. A new complete carpet and headlining were also installed along with 'dynamat' soundproofing to the floors and roof, total cost exceeding $4,000 at the time. Around this period the car was professionally repainted in its original 'horizon blue' colour as the paintwork had faded from the California sun; again with another bill showing a cost of $5,000. Documents also show that the car has a $2,000 music system installed which was later taken out of the car - the owner reckons this accounts for the shot speaker which he notes will need to be replaced by the new owner. Maintenance on the car has continued since coming to the UK with a reconditioned radiator, rebuilt carburettor and new rear exhaust being just some of the list of work carried out (enquire for full breakdown). Lastly, the car comes with a large history file to back up its extensive care. Our private London-based vendor has kept the car in his propertys underground car park since ownership and only driven in dry conditions for pleasure. The combination of this and its Californian beginnings are a true testament to the vehicles condition.
