Two original pen, ink and watercolour cartoons, both unsigned and undated, c. 1980s, one depicting a standing after-dinner speaker with two sleepy listeners seated adjacent, the other showing a carousing drunk and dishevelled soldier obliviously staggering past an upturned jeep with onlooking officer trapped beneath, both approx. 300 x 230 mm, framed and glazed The first cartoon was used at the front cover illustration for John Aspinwall's 'Hit Me Again! More After-Dinner Stories from both Houses of Parliament' (1984). A signed copy of the book is included with the lot. (3)
William Ewart Gladstone (1809-1898) An historically interesting one page autograph letter with envelope from 10, Downing Street, Whitehall to D.H. Macfarlane Esq M.P. dated Aug. 4.1881, concerning the Land Bill and replying to his letter expressing concern regarding release of prisoners and ‘that Mr Parnell on Monday announced himself as the organ for the communication of the desires of the prisoners, and thereupon proceeded, in a state of apparently great excitement, to insult the Speaker and to violate the order of the House with a degree of indecency which I do not remember to have been equalled’.
