A PALE CELADON AND RUSSET JADE 'BIRD' PENDANT, LATE SHANG DYNASTYChina, 1300-1050 BC. The flat stone worked in the form of a bird in profile, perched on its claws, with a distinct round beak pierced with a circular aperture for suspension, the head surmounted by a crest, and finely incised with plumage. The semi translucent stone of pale celadon color with russet inclusions and areas of white calcification.Provenance: From the collection of Dr. Wou Kiuan. Wou Lien-Pai Museum, coll. no. E.3.21A-H. Dr. Wou Kiuan (1910-1997) was a Chinese diplomat and noted scholar of Chinese art. His father, Wou Lien-Pai (1873-1944), was one the leading political figures of early 20th century China, remembered for his role as speaker and leader of parliament during the turbulent years of the Republican era. Dr. Wou himself embarked on an illustrious career in diplomacy until his retirement in 1952, when he settled in London and devoted the rest of his life to the study of Chinese art. It was no doubt fortuitous that Dr. Wou's years of collecting coincided with an abundant availability of exceptional Chinese art on the London market. From the mid-1950s to the late 1960s he was able to form a collection of well over 1,000 works that together represented virtually every category of Chinese art. At the heart of Dr. Wou's drive to collect was a burning desire to preserve the relics of China's rich historical past scattered across Europe, and to promote Chinese art and culture. It is unclear when Dr. Wou conceived of the idea to create a place to house his collection, but in 1968 he opened the doors to the Wou Lien-Pai Museum, named in honor of his father. Over the years the Museum became a 'must see' destination for collectors, academics, and visiting dignitaries, and Dr. Wou would delight in leading his visitors through the galleries, recounting stories of China's glorious history. Condition: Very good condition with expected old wear and weathering, little nibbling, and minuscule chips.Weight: 3.2 g Dimensions: Height 2.7 cmLiterature comparison:Compare a related jade pendant of a bird, late Shang dynasty, 3.7 cm, in the Smithsonian Museum, accession number F1979.25.Auction result comparison:Type: RelatedAuction: Sotheby's New York, 22 September 2020, lot 248Estimate: USD 8,000 or approx. 1973 Volkswagen GT Beetle 1584cc 2 door saloon Only showing 21800 miles on the odometer and one of only 2500 cars produced Registration: PPF 905L Chassis: 1132349819 Odometer: 21851 Transmission: Manual MOT: Exempt Guide £600,0 to £8,000 . Offered on behalf of a deceased estate . Rare and desirable 1600 GT . One of only 2500 produced in 1973 . Original interior Outside The lovely original colour yellow lemon paintwork isn't too far from the JCB machines we sell lots of here at Gateway, and has been re-painted some time ago to a good standard. That said, there are a few imperfections, namely; rust bubble on the lower part of the bonnet around 5mm in size, some surface rust is showing on the far edges of both sides of the roof gutters where they meet engine cover panel, n/s rear 1/4 panel where wing meets the panel is bubbling with rust and will need rectification before it gets hold, on the same panel near where the rear of the window is there is some bubbling rust around 2 inches in diameter and finally where the ariel bolts through the scuttle panel there has been some rust which has been treated and touched up. Both front and rear bumpers chrome is pitted with rust which a bit of elbow grease could remove the majority of. The steel wheels are in good condition with matching Firestone tyres all round. Inside The interior of this GT is very original with no rips or tears in the seats or carpets and its headlining is nice and taught with no damage. It has been retrofitted with a Pioneer stereo and speaker system and some inertia rear seat belts. Mechanicals The engine fires into life with vigor and runs sweetly with an accompanying familiar flat 4 burble. It pulls well through all the gears with the selection being positive, that extra few horses supplied by the GT engine are certainly noticeable. History The accompanying paperwork is limited to hand full of maintenance invoices from 2015/16 which show some remedial works and a service. Our Opinion A great entry into the vibrant air cooled VW scene, this desirable GT model adds a small amount of performance to the unique characteristics of these wonderful cars. We think the colour makes this car and is ready to be enjoyed for the season ahead while improving some of its imperfections detailed above.
1989 Volkswagen Golf GTI 1.8 litre 3 door hatchback Original specification hot hatch with comprehensive history file Registration: F386 TWP Chassis: WVWZZZ19ZJW668007 Odometer: 121000 Transmission: Manual MOT: 9th February 2024 No Reserve . Fitted with factory tilt /slide sunroof . Optional BBS alloy wheel . Original interior and dashboard without any cracks . Two sets of keys . Fully documented history from 1998 until 2005 . Full book pack including service book . Comprehensive history file Outside On the whole the exterior of this car looks good with no scratches, dents or corrosion to the bodywork, however the car has been subject to a repaint at some point in its past which hasn't been done to the highest standard. In some areas the silver paint work looks a little flat and isn't as smooth to the touch as it should be. This shouldn't detract from what is a very good car and would be an excellent car one the paintwork has been addressed. All the plastics are good with no damage, marks or scratches. The 15" BBS alloy wheels look great and are shod with excellent matching tyres all around. Inside The cloth seats are in excellent order with only a small sign of wear on the drivers seat base bolster where the bolster is slightly thread bare in an area around 5 mm in size. The car comes with electric windows and a modern stereo. All carpets are in good order as is the headlining and the parcel shelf is still present and free from any speaker holes. The doors have that familiar heavy feel and pleasing shut noise only found on VW's from this era. Mechanics The torquey 8 valve engine starts and runs well, and the driving experience is a pleasure. Everything feels tight and solid just like a Golf should, the only fault being a temperamental cheap aftermarket alarm system which means the hazard lights sometimes come on. We feel it would be better removed. History Supplied new under lease to Banque Paribas it remained with them until circa 1991. It then passed to another owner before being acquired by William Barnaby of Kilmarnock in 1998 who kept the car until 2005 during which time kept a fastidious log of all works carried out along with the relevant invoices. The car comes complete with a full book pack, comprehensive service history and two sets of keys. Our Opinion Rare to find an example that has not been modified and messed about with. Our car offers and inexpensive route into the vibrant VW scene.
