Interesting, early A.L.S., R Anthony Eden, two pages, 8vo, London, 12th May 1924, to the Speaker (John Henry Whitley, 1866-1935), on the blind embossed stationery of the House of Commons. Eden politely asks Whitley if he may participate for a few minutes in the next days debate on New Import duties and continues to explain, `My reasons for troubling you are that my constituency is very closely affected by the fate of these duties. More than any constituency in the country perhaps (except its neighbours Coventry) it is deeply interested in the future of the motor trade. Not only are there several factories in the constituency but a large number of my constituents from Warwick & Leamington & Kenilworth go daily to work in Coventry. In consequence I have received a great number of representations about these duties and I have promised to do what I can to represent their views on a matter which so vitally affects them.` A good letter with a scarce, early form of Eden`s signature. About EX Eden was elected as a Conservative Member of Parliament for Warwick & Leamington in the December 1923 General Election.

SHAW GEORGE BERNARD: (1856-1950) Irish Playwright, Nobel Prize Winner for Literature, 1925. Interesting A.L.S, G. Bernard Shaw, one page, 4to, Whitehall Court, London, 18th January 1939, to W. A. Bedford, written in shorthand. Shaw announces `All my works are written in Pitman as far as first drafts are concerned` and continues `But you will look in vain in my shorthand for grammalogues and logorams, and contractions and word groups which make verbatim reporting possible. I have long since discarded most of them as unnecessary for my work, and very baffling to the typist who has to transcribe it. Of course I retain the ticks and dots that stand arbitrarily for the articles, prepositions, and conjuctions, with some of the words that occur most frequently; but for the rest, when there is no speaker to pace me, and my speed can be no greater than at which I can compose, I find it far easier, and consequently shorter, to spell the word fully than to recollect or invent a contraction for it.` Shaw further writes `You must also allow for the fact that I learned shorthand sixty years ago. During that time it has been necessary to make changes to prevent the textbooks from falling out of copyright into the public domain. I have not followed these changes. I place the short vowels in the old way, and have some other obsolete tricks that baffle the up-to-date typist.` and in concluding adds `I have done a good deal of my writing in the train, and I have found Pitman, because the characters are not written, but drawn, resists the joggling of the carriage much better than longhand, which is often hopelessly illegible under such circumstances.` A letter of good content, accompanied by a complete transcript.
