In 1819 Hunt was invited by the Patriotic Union Society to be one of the scheduled speakers at a rally in Manchester, which turned into the Peterloo massacre. Hunt was arrested for high treason and sentenced to thirty month's imprisonment. In 1830 he became a member of parliament for Preston and was the first MP to advocate for women's suffrage. Signed with initials, oil on canvas74cm x 122cm (29in x 48in)Exhibited: Birmingham Society of Artists 1867Footnote: Note: John Ritchie’s group compositions are particularly accomplished. While the painting depicts a hustings in 1750, the scene is replete with biting commentary upon contemporary Victorian politics and society, and likely references the fierce debate that preceded the 1867 Reform Act. A series of figures placed from right to left across the composition demonstrate political engagement across diverse social groups, but also serve to illustrate their profound economic disparity and disenfranchisement: first, the children playing in a basket in the dirt, their parents perhaps in attendance either at the hustings or the nearby tavern; next, the soldier whose wounded leg means he must be wheeled to the hustings; then the well-heeled men who climb upon a cart to gain a better view; and finally, the aristocratic woman attended by her coachmen, who observes the action from the safety of her elegant carriage. Below the speaker leading the hustings, a man holds a scarecrow aloft in mockery. The mass of the crowd lends the composition an epic scope, but the discrete interactions between Ritchie’s figures also reveal pathos, satire and compassion. His compositions are rich with detail, and always reward closer inspection.Ritchie was an accomplished genre painter best-known for his depictions of contemporary Victorian life. He was particularly inspired by William Powell Frith’s panoramic paintings with animated crowd scenes. Ritchie exhibited at the Royal Academy, the Royal Society of British Artists and the British Institution. This particular painting was shown at the Birmingham Society of Artists exhibition in 1867. He is best known for his companion paintings of London A Winter’s Day in St, James’ Park and A Summer Day in Hyde Park, exhibited at the Liverpool Academy in 1858. Despite Ritchie’s formidable talent, very little is known about his life.

2001 MG MGF (Mk2) 1.8 VVC Roadster - Odometer reading 60,630 miles - Rare Alumina Green metallic coachwork-New Head Gasket, Timing Belt, Tensioner & Water-PumpOn release in 1995, the MGF was available in two forms: a standard 1.8-litre, 115bhp model, and a high-performance 145bhp model that featured a clever variable valve control system allowing the Rover K-series unit to rev to 7200rpm. Equipment levels were pretty generous, although early non-VVC models made do without standard power-steering. The VVC models also left the standard 15 wheels behind for newly designed 16 items, wearing wider rubber. Post 1999 facelifted VVC cars also benefitted from improved multi-speaker sound systems and many other quality comfort upgrades to the interior.Sold new in June 2001 in North London, this MGF is spec'd in rare Alumina Green metallic with black leather. It is a 1.8 VVC with the 145bhp output. Stereo upgrade is a Kenwood KDC-X5200BT unit which has a remote control handset and features i-pod and bluetooth connectivity. The current registered keeper has bills in the history file totalling £2,215 invested during the last six years. Significantly, the car has benefited from work at Roberts MG Specialists in Old Windsor in the last three months... which included a new clutch slave cylinder, new head gasket, timing belt, tensioner and water pump, in addition to its routine annual service - a copy of the bill for £900 excluding VAT is present. Unsurprisingly the car sounds and performs impressively on the road, feeling agile, nimble and responsive. The car benefits from the full compliment of books in the original MG owners wallet, as well as both original remote locking keys, spare wheel and tools. 1987 Renault 5 TL 'Rio' Limited Edition - Rare 'Rio' UK only Special Edition - Odometer reading 57,355 miles - One lady owned nearly 30 years - MOT expires 31st July 2022 - Cherished Registration Number comes with the vehicle Renault's '5' is a four-passenger, three or five-door, front-engine, front wheel drive hatchback supermini manufactured and marketed by one of France's most successful automobile companies over two generations: 19721985 (also called R5) and 19841996. The compact, small car market was thriving in the UK during the 1980's and the R5 was significantly Renaults best selling UK model. The second generation shape (released in 1985) featured a new transverse engine and gearbox layout, galvanised & zinc coated structural elements, improved efficiency engines, 20% greater glass area, and uprated safety features. The driving distance range of the new 1,108cc 'TL' model, when fitted with the 5-speed gearbox, on a full tank of fuel was elevated to a staggering 620 miles, equating to 68.9 mpg... a world record at the time for a spark ignition vehicle according to Renault. To accelerate sales further and draw in a younger audience, Renault UK launched a Limited Production 'Special Edition' named 'Rio' in March 1987. 4,000 cars were made available (as either a 956cc 4-speed or 1108cc 5 - speed) with a twin speaker digital stereo system, 3-position Britax glass Sunhatch roof, multi-coloured pattern fabric upholstery amongst other features. Only available in bright red or silver, all were sold out in the first few weeks of being launched. JIB 1844 (the cherished number stays with the car) was first registered in May 1987 - one of the last registered 'Rio' Special Edition cars. Specified in Bright red with the larger 1,108cc engine and optioned with 5-Speed manual gearbox. Joan Ivy Bull (JIB) purchased the car in 1991 and transferred the cherished number on to the car within the first twelve months. The Renault 5 was sparsely used, accumulating no more than 6,000 miles in the first eleven years of her ownership. The keys were lost and the car was stored in her garage until Summer 2020 when a specialist key company were asked to create new keys for the vehicle. They subsequently purchased the car, serviced and recommissioned the car for road use. The car was purchased by a young lady local to Ewbanks in the Summer of 2020 but has been driven less than 100 miles in her first 16 months of ownership. She tells us that the car always starts and been fun to drive on the occasions of her using it. There is a good quantity of new and old MOT certificates in the history file, which correlate with the current odometer reading, which remains very low at 57, 355 miles. There are a number of old V5's also, which provide a charming view of the cars history in the ownership of three ladies. The paintwork gleams beautifully and the interior looks virtually untouched, so well has it been preserved. It is a very pretty little classic which should provide fairly reliable, enjoyable and low budget classic motoring to its next owner.- Our buyers premium on all cars, motorbikes and scooters is 10% + VAT. - We encourage any interested parties to inspect the vehicle on our viewing days and prior to sale on Thursday 2nd to satisfy themselves on the car's condition, please check our buying terms and conditions for cars and bikes available online or via email. - Transportation options may be available, please contact us for a quote.
BALFOUR ARTHUR JAMES: (1848-1930) British Prime Minister 1902-05. T.L.S., Balfour, two pages, 8vo, Carlton Gardens, Pall Mall, 31st May 1924, to 'My dear Dr. Myers', marked Private. Balfour thanks his correspondent for their letter and continues 'I accept your estimate of my two after-dinner efforts with the utmost satisfaction, but I must admit with very genuine surprise. It shews how utterly incapable a speaker is of judging his own work. I need hardly say that I attach no value to what I said at the Athenaeum, but it seemed to be fairly adequate to the occasion, and to be produced in an unlaboured fashion. On Thursday, however, I seemed to myself to be always struggling with much effort to make the kind of speech I had intended, and always struggling in vain. There are great disadvantages in having no capacity for verbal preparation; but I am puzzled at its producing in the mind of the speaker, i.e. myself, such curious re-actions', concluding 'I greatly hope that our gathering this week will do something to aid the cause. Millionaires are much wanted!'. VG
