SERIES, 2005 - PRESENT) - Replica TARDIS Police Box Used for Various Non-BBC Productions - A replica TARDIS police box based on the 11th and 12th Doctors' configuration from Steven Moffat's sci-fi series Doctor Who. The Doctor (Matt Smith and Peter Capaldi) sought adventure through time and space with various human companions and outsmarting countless nemeses, including Daleks and the Weeping Angels. This replica was used in a variety of trade shows and rented out to various non-BBC productions, including The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson, and is constructed for fast setup and striking as needed. Built primarily from spruce wood and painted "Sydney Blue" to emulate the original production pieces, it features light and sound options that are remote controllable. Its light-up functions include the top-mounted lantern, in addition to various acrylic signages: "Police Box" headers, windows, and the "Pull to Open" door sign with hand-applied acrylic lettering. A speaker allows for the audio playback of key effects, including the iconic TARDIS "Vworp!" materialization and dematerialization, the Cloister Bell catastrophe alarm, and the door lock's "chirp chirp." Light and sound effects are coordinated, depending on pre-programmed remote-controlled instructions. GHOSTBUSTERS (2016) - Light-Up Hero V-2 Style Proton Pack - A light-up hero V-2 style proton pack from Paul Feig's supernatural comedy Ghostbusters. A team of paranormal investigators wore the first iteration of their specially-created backpacks, which gave them the ability to contain and catch ghosts. This pack features a combustible sticker, which attributes it to Dr. Erin Gilbert (as played by Kristen Wiig). These details include a carbon speaker basket coiled with a series of copper-color wires; metal and nylon cables and wiring; several green circuitry plates; a pressure gauge; several control boxes featuring levers and knobs; and a copper-color metal canister. The wand has a removable illuminating SFX barrel tip that produces red light. This lot exhibits signs of wear throughout from age and use. MOONRAKER (1979) - Glastron Carlson Speedboat - A Glastron Carlson speedboat from the production of Lewis Gilbert's Bond film Moonraker. In the climactic action sequence, Hugo Drax's (Michael Lonsdale) men chased Bond down the Amazon River in speedboats.Four Glastron Carlson CV23HT speedboats were acquired for production by EON Productions for the chase sequence and customized with a specialty silver flake gel coat over gray paint applied during the fiberglass molding process. This is believed to be one of only two to survive from production, having been sold at a boat show in 1979 and held in a private collection ever since. However, as the custom upper canopy visible in the film is not included, it remains unknown if one was ever affixed to this boat, and therefore if it was ever filmed. In addition to its distinctive paint scheme, this operational, gas-powered speedboat features ID number "GCV 10542C," a latching sunshield over the cabin, a "Glastron Carlson" plaque, and a MerCruiser 260 HP stern-driven engine with functional lighting and speaker systems installed. The interior is upholstered with gray leatherette and paneled with varnished wood, and features red velvet and white shag carpeting. A "Moonraker II" decal was affixed to the starboard bow by the current owner. Also included is a Letter of Authenticity from noted James Bond collector and co-founder of The Ian Fleming Foundation, Doug Redenius.Following production, red pinstriping was added. This pinstriping is tape-based, not paint, and can be removed with heat. Due to age and exposure, the boat exhibits rusting to its internal mechanisms, fading to the exterior and wood finishes, and various liquid streaks and grime, but it retains its iconic silver coloration. As it remains stored and registered in Canada, bidders will need to contact Propstore in advance to arrange shipment and transfer of registration. Dimensions: 276" x 83" x 72" (702 cm x 211 cm x 211 cm)Contains electronics; see electronics notice in the Buyer's Guide.Special shipping required; see notice in the Buyer's Guide.Stored off-site; see off-site storage notice in the Buyer's Guide.Estimate: $30,000 - 60,000Bidding for this lot will end on Wednesday, June 28th. A fine 2-clasp ‘Boat Service’ N.G.S. awarded to Captain of the Forecastle Thomas Melvill, who participated in the boats of the Bacchante in three hard-fought actions which resulted in the capture of thirty-three enemy vessels on the Adriatic coast Naval General Service 1793-1840, 2 clasps, 1 & 18 Sep Boat Service 1812, 6 Jan Boat Service 1813 (Thomas Melvill.) light contact marks to edge and small bruise to Queen’s cheek, otherwise very fine £7,000-£9,000 --- Provenance: Payne Collection 1911; Hamilton Smith Collection, Glendining’s, November 1927; Glendining’s, July 1975; Spink, March 1995; John Goddard Collection, Dix Noonan Webb, November 2015. 1 & 18 Sep Boat Service 1812 [21 issued] - 8 known, including examples in the National Maritime Museum, and the Royal Marines Museum (2).

6 Jan Boat Service 1813 [26 issued] - 9 known, including examples in the National Maritime Museum, and the Royal Marines Museum (2).

Thomas Melvill (Melvin on Baccante’s muster list) is confirmed on the rolls as Captain of the Forecastle aboard the Bacchante for both clasps. Born in Fifeshire, he joined the Bacchante in that rate on 31 October 1811.

On 1 September 1812, a party of 65 officers and men in five boats from Bacchante, under the command of First Lieutenant Donat Henchy O’Brien, cut out and captured two French gunboats, the xebec Tisiphone and seven vessels of a convoy in Port Lemo, Istria, in the Adriatic. ‘On his approach to the xebec with muffled oars, Lieutenant O’Brien was hailed by a stentorian voice “come alongside you English bastards”. O’Brien, without correcting the speaker on his national antecedents, thanked him for his polite invitation and assured him he would be with him immediately - he was, the British sprang on board the enemy vessel and the Frenchmen after discharging an ineffectual volley of grape and musketry, dropped their lighted matches and jumped overboard.’ The second date on this clasp does not appear on the official list and some authorities state it to be an official error not relating to the award at all. However, as will be seen from the following extract from The Royal Navy by W. Laird Clowes, it was obviously an error in the original Gazette notice that was clearly corrected prior to the issue of the double-dated clasp:

‘On September 18th [1812], having chased a convoy in the passage between Vasto and the island of Tremiti, off the coast of Apulia, Captain William Hoste, of the Bacchante 38, despatched his six boats, under Lieutenants Donat Henchy O’Brien and Silas Thomson Hood, to follow up the enemy, the wind having failed the frigate. The convoy, of eighteen merchantmen, anchored and hauled aground, having outside of it eight armed vessels, carrying among them eight long guns, six swivels, and 104 men. The attacking party numbered only 72, but it rowed in with such determination, and boarded with such dash, that the enemy fled incontinently, leaving the entire convoy to the victors.’ Both of the distinguished actions of 1st and 18th September are reported in the London Gazette of 1813, pp 163-4. Lieutenant O’Brien was promoted to Commander on 22 January 1813, for this and previous actions.

At dawn on 6 January 1813, when H.M. ships Bacchante and Weazle were lying becalmed to the south-east of Cape Otranto, five French gunboats were observed, three in the south-west making for Otranto and two heading south-east. The Weazle was directed to attend to the smaller division and Lieutenant Donat Henchy O’Brien to the larger one in Bacchante’s barge. At 8.00 am, after a long pull, Lieutenant O’Brien overtook and captured the sternmost gunboat of two guns. This was left in the hands of Midshipman Thomas Hoste, who, after securing the prisoners, worked the bow-gun of the prize against her late friends. Lieutenant O’Brien pushed on and captured the two other gunboats making towards Calabria. The Weazle, unable to catch up with the smaller division, sent in two boats under the orders of Lieutenant Thomas Wholey and, together with another boat from the Bacchante, under the orders of Master’s Mate Edward Webb, boarded and carried the two gunboats successively, each after a determined resistance.

An English delftware Popish Plot tile, circa 1680-1700Painted in manganese with 'Capt Bedlow carrying letters to Forraigne Parts', William Bedloe on horseback, approaching the coast where a ship waits at anchor, 12.8cm squareFootnotes:ProvenanceFelton House, North SomersetThe Ten of Clubs playing card is the source for this tile. When the informer William Bedloe enters the narrative of the Popish Plot, he already had a reputation as a confidence trickster and a criminal, having recently spent time in prison for fraud. When Bedloe first appeared before the bar in the House of Commons he embraced his criminal reputation, proclaiming 'Mr Speaker, I have been a great rogue, but had I not been so I could not have known these things I am about to tell you'. That his inconsistent and often 'newly recollected evidence' was taken seriously is testament to the severity of anti-Catholic bias and public hysteria that allowed men like Bedloe to be temporarily presented as heroes. He offered some corroboration of Oates' testimony and it was necessary to have two witnesses when prosecuting for treason. Bedloe saw an opportunity to use his knowledge of both the Jesuits and the criminal underworld to weave together his story with that of Oates. Bedloe implicated various Jesuits and officials in the plot to kill the King and also the murder of Sir Godfrey. In addition, he had been granted a share of the £500 reward for bringing Godfrey's 'murderers' to justice. Like Oates, Bedloe had been a messenger for the Jesuits and a personal servant to Fr Harcourt. Harcourt admitted under cross-examination that Bedloe had carried letters for him between England and the Continent in 1675, but denied any involvement in a plot to kill the King. The Felton House Tiles: Important English delftware tiles depicting the Popish Plot, circa 1680-1700The 'discovery' of the Popish Plot in the autumn of 1678 and the subsequent trials, political upheaval and mass hysteria that erupted in England, reads like a modern-day soap opera. The supposed Catholic conspiracy to assassinate King Charles II, replace him with his papist brother James, Duke of York, and overthrow the Protestant establishment turned out to be the invention of a disreputable priest named Titus Oates, whose many lies and inventions appealed to the anti-Catholic sentiment of the time. Oates was eventually convicted of perjury, but not before over a dozen innocent men were executed and others imprisoned, as the flames of anti-Catholic hatred and suspicion were fanned throughout the country.A set of playing cards depicting various scenes from the plot, printed from engravings by Francis Barlow, was first advertised in the newspaper True Domestick Intelligence in December 1679. A complete set of these Popish Plot playing cards is in the British Museum (inv. no.1896,0501.915.1-52). These designs were subsequently copied onto some of the earliest delftware tiles produced in England. The timing of the plot coincides with a warrant granted to the Dutch potter, Jan Ariens van Hamme, who had come to London'to exercise his trade and calling of making Tiles...after the way practised in Holland...whichhath not been practised in this our kingdome'.Several distinct versions of Popish Plot tiles were produced. One of these is painted in blue and the scenes are reserved in circular panels. These blue and white tiles have corner motifs and include inscriptions copied directly from the playing cards. See Frank Britton, London Delftware (1987), p.176 where three such tiles are illustrated. Anthony Ray suggests that these blue painted tiles were probably made at Vauxhall by van Hamme, who died in 1680, see English Delftware Tiles (1973), p.35. When found in manganese, each scene fills the available space save for a rectangular reserve at the bottom of each tile. An extremely rare set of twenty-one manganese Popish Plot tiles, matching the Felton House Tiles, was sold by Sotheby's on 15 March 1971, lot 21. A single tile depicting 'The Consult at Somerset House' was sold by Bonhams on 21 May 2014, lot 21. It has been suggested that the manganese examples were made a few years after their blue counterparts. However, the discovery of the Felton House Tiles adds weight to the argument that these were produced much closer to 1680, whilst the satirical playing cards were still topical. Indeed, close examination of the tiles show that they were copied from a deck of the Popish Plot playing cards and not from the blue and white versions.Felton House in North Somerset is a late 17th century house, confirmed by a date stone for 1684. Recent restoration of the building involved the removal of a mid-18th century fireplace which revealed an earlier fireplace behind, retaining the remains of other Popish Plot tiles from this set. The seven tiles included in this sale were removed from the fireplace in the 1950s and were recently discovered tucked away in a box. Presumably they were installed around 1684 - the date inscribed on the datestone - when the furore of the plot was still fresh in the country's consciousness. King Charles II died just a year later and the fear upon which the fictitious plot was based came to be realised; Charles II was succeeded by his brother who became king James II of England and James VI of Scotland, a Catholic monarch. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
