* Trotsky (Leon, 1879-1940), Russian revolutionary, Soviet politician, journalist, and political theorist. Typed Letter Signed, ‘L. Trotsky’, 8 November 1933, to Comrade [John] Paton, in English, asking for information and advice ‘regarding the German comrade, Maria Reese …In its time she went over from the socialist party to the communist and played a considerable role in the revolutionary movement as member of the Reichstag and as outstanding mass speaker. She has just broken with the Comintern and gave publicity to this fact in our German paper, “Unser Wort”’, saying that she now needs to make decisions about her future, that she knows English, has some journalistic experience and that ‘her main strength lies in mass agitation, especially among women’, and wondering if she might be able to work in England, signed in blue ink, (‘L’ not fully inked), minor creases, 1 page, 4to, pinned to a carbon copy of Paton’s reply, 20 November 1933, in which he explains that he does know of Maria Reese but that coming to England will be very difficult and finding paid work even harder, and though he [and the Independent Labour Party] would be very happy to meet her if she did come to England, before concluding that ‘England is one of the most illiberal countries in the world now with regard to its treatment of the foreigner who is poor’, yellow paper, light creasing, 2 pages, 4toQTY: (2)NOTE:Provenance: The Autograph Collection of Peter Bland (1928-2003).John Paton (1886-1976) was General Secretary of the Independent Labour Party 1927–1933, and a Labour MP from 1945 to 1964. Paton had visited Trotsky in France earlier in 1933.Maria Reese (1889-1958) was a German teacher who became a writer and journalist. She was also politically active, and sat as a member of the national parliament between 1928 and 1933.For most of her time in the Reichstag she was a Communist member. However, in 1933, after spending time in Moscow she became appalled by the careerist functionaries surrounding Stalin. She managed to escape from the Soviet Union and pursued a complicated political trajectory which included a period working for the Nazi government in the Anti-Comintern department of the Propaganda Ministry. Trotsky published a supportive article about Reese’s letter and her views in an article titled ‘Maria Reese and the Comintern’ in The Militant, 25 November 1933, p. 3.

In superbly original condition, just 25,000 miles, with full service history and from 32-years ownership. In 1986, the original Sierra Cosworth was a new kind of performance car - a blue-collar hero able to humble true sports cars. In 1988, Ford introduced the Sierra Sapphire RS Cosworth, a more ‘discreet’ version, built using the four-door Sapphire bodyshell, first with the same rear-wheel drive layout as the three-door original, and then later with four-wheel drive; but even with a more restrained exterior, a plush velour interior and an executive four-door shell, the Sapphire was far from dull. The early rear-wheel drive cars had 204bhp from the YBB engine (205 block), a T5 gearbox, 7" x 15" lattice alloy wheels, front and rear spoilers, side skirts and Recaro seats. The rear-wheel drive cars could hit 60mph in 6.1 seconds. Despite the extra power and potential for greater traction, the later 4x4 Sapphire was slower to 60mph, reaching the speed in 6.6 secs. Approximately 13,140 2WD Sapphire examples were produced during 1988-1989; all were assembled in Ghenk, Belgium, with UK-built Ford-Cosworth engines. The car presented here is a 1989 Ford Sierra Sapphire RS Cosworth (2WD) and is in super original, unmolested condition. First registered on 18th August 1989, this superb example has covered just over 25,000 miles within the same family since it was just two years old. Due to the owner's poor health, this Sapphire remained unused and garaged for over 20 years. A combination of diligent ownership, minimal use (due to circumstance) and sheer preservation, now means this ‘Fast Ford’ is in collector-quality condition. We are informed that this exceptional car still retains its original factory-fitted panels, factory-etched glass and its original paint throughout. The interior is described as showing virtually no wear on the switchgear or surfaces. Likewise, all the dials and switchgear are said to function correctly, there are no cracks or UV damage to the dashboard and the original Recaro seats remain in beautiful condition. The boot contains its original Dunlop Sport spare wheel and factory-fitted jack whilst the parcel shelf is straight and free from any aftermarket speaker holes. The original electronic sound system, ECU2 (including power amplifier) are also still in situ, whilst the factory-fitted 15" wheels are shod with period Pirelli P600 tyres. The brakes have been fully recommissioned, benefiting from new rear calipers, brake fluid and discs/pads.The accompanying service history file includes the original Ford service book, owner’s handbook, radio operation manual, numerous invoices, two Ford keys, old tax discs and MOT history certificates. If you are looking for an unmolested, original RS Cosworth, this is probably one of the worthiest candidates currently available. The lighter and rarer version of the Sapphire, this example is one for the Ford connoisseur and is offered at an attractive price guide, offering the new owner membership of the exclusive club of RS ownership.Specification Make: FORD Model: SIERRA SAPPHIRE RS COSWORTH 2WD Year: 1989 Chassis Number: WF0FXXGBBFJS34294 Registration Number: G399 MGH Transmission: Manual Engine Number: JS34294 Drive Side: Right-hand Drive Odometer Reading: 25115 Miles Make: RHDClick here for more details and images

A pre WW2 ‘Great Escape’ interest swagger stick, once the property of Pilot Officer Marcel Zillessen (1917-1999). The swagger stick is of usual form, with a lacquered malacca body, brass ferrule, and a nickel pommel. The pommel has badge of the Gresham School OTC (Officer Training Corps), and has the name ‘Zillessen’ scratched into both the metal of the pommel, and to the wood. There is also the word ‘Gresham’ and ‘Holt’, the latter being the location of the Gresham School in Norfolk. Notes: Marcel Zillessen was born in Northampton in 1917, to a German father and Irish mother. He attended the Gresham’s School between 1930 and 1933, joining the Officer Training Corps between the ages of 13 and 16. It’s unknown what rank the young Zillessen held during his time in the OTC, but this swagger stick is a memento of his time there. Marcel spent some time studying at university in Berlin, and was a fluent German speaker, a skill that was to pay dividends during his time spent as a POW. In 1943, While piloting a Hurricane in North Africa, Marcel was shot down, and eventually taken to the Luftwaffe run Prisoner of War camp, Stalag Luft III, which held allied Air Force personnel. Zillessen’s fluency in German help to gain him favours from his guard captors, who were to provide him with pens, paper and ink that were later used to forge travel documents. Marcel was instrumental in planning the escape from the camp, using the tunnels known as ‘Tom, Dick, and Harry’, and it’s well documented that he was to be the last man out from the Harry tunnel. Ultimately, the plot was foiled, and Marcel fled back to his barrack hut when the tunnels were discovered. Being the last man in line to leave may have ultimately saved his life, as 73 of the escapees were captured within 3 days, with 50 being executed on the direct orders of Hitler. Marcel’s character was portrayed in the Great Escape movie by James Garner (playing Bob Hendley ‘the scrounger’), although it’s thought that Garner’s character may have been an amalgamation of several different men from the camp. It’s thought that the swagger stick was acquired by a school friend, and fellow OTC member of Zillessen, who himself later went on to work at Bletchley Park during WW2. Approximately 70.3cm length. Condition: generally good. No major dents or splits to pommel, just normal light wear from use. The malacca body is free from any major issues, with just light wear and contact marks commensurate with use. Brass ferrule intact and in good used condition.
