A GREEN JADE 'BIRD' PENDANT FRAGMENT, WESTERN ZHOU DYNASTY China, 1100-1000 BC. The flat stone carved in the form of a stylized bird, each side with grooves forming the wings and tail. The opaque jade of a grayish-green color with areas of white calcification.Provenance: From the collection of Dr. Wou Kiuan. Wou Lien-Pai Museum, coll. no. E.3.21A-H. Dr. Wou Kiuan (1910-1997) was a Chinese diplomat and noted scholar of Chinese art. His father, Wou Lien-Pai (1873-1944), was one the leading political figures of early 20th century China, remembered for his role as speaker and leader of parliament during the turbulent years of the Republican era. Dr. Wou himself embarked on an illustrious career in diplomacy until his retirement in 1952, when he settled in London and devoted the rest of his life to the study of Chinese art. It was no doubt fortuitous that Dr. Wou's years of collecting coincided with an abundant availability of exceptional Chinese art on the London market. From the mid-1950s to the late 1960s he was able to form a collection of well over 1,000 works that together represented virtually every category of Chinese art. At the heart of Dr. Wou's drive to collect was a burning desire to preserve the relics of China's rich historical past scattered across Europe, and to promote Chinese art and culture. It is unclear when Dr. Wou conceived of the idea to create a place to house his collection, but in 1968 he opened the doors to the Wou Lien-Pai Museum, named in honor of his father. Over the years the Museum became a 'must see' destination for collectors, academics, and visiting dignitaries, and Dr. Wou would delight in leading his visitors through the galleries, recounting stories of China's glorious history. Condition: Condition commensurate with age. Old wear, weathering and erosion, nibbling, some chips and losses. The stone with natural fissures, some of which may have developed into small hairline cracks over time.Weight: 7.2 g Dimensions: Length 7.6 cm Expert's note (added 20.2.2023): Jades such as the present lot can be dated to as early as the Shang Dynasty. It has been theorized that they were once made as adornments and supports for elaborate lacquer vessels imitating the designs of ritual bronzes (see image section). None of these complete vessels have ever been found. This original intended use eventually fell out of fashion with the repurposing of these archaic examples for bodily adornment. See Qian Yang's thesis: The Circulation of Jades in Early China (Late Neolithic - Eastern Zhou, ca. 4500 -221 B.C.). Literature comparison: Compare a closely related jade plaque, described as a fish, Western Zhou dynasty, in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, accession number 24.51.7. Compare a closely related jade plaque of a bird, in the British Museum, accession number 1947,0712.465, and illustrated in J. Rawson, Chinese Jades from the Neolithic to the Qing, British Museum, 1995, p. 227, fig. 1, where she notes that during the Western Zhou dynasty, the tail became more horizontal and looks more like a 'fish' tail, such is the case for the present lot.Auction result comparison:Type: RelatedAuction: Sotheby's Hong Kong, 26 May 2021, lot 127Price: HKD 56,700 or approx. 2021 Volkswagen Transporter T30 Highline Camper Transmission: manualMileage:5020Volkswagen unveiled the updated T6.1 version of the T6 at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2019. Essentially a mid-cycle refresh, the main updates were electric power steering, which allows for the implementation of more driver assist functions compared to the T6. There were also minor styling updates in the form of a deeper front grille section. The T6.1 also has a new dashboard incorporating updated infotainment systems similar to those used in Volkswagen's passenger car range, and the ability to specify the 'Virtual Cockpit' fully digital instrument cluster first seen on the Golf and Passat. This stunning one owner T30 Highline was purchased by our vendor with the express intention of converting it to a bespoke camper and the results are stunning. The cost of the high specification manual T30 initially was £34,000 plus VAT alone. Specified in grey, our vendor had the van fully kitted with the 'Leighton Van Bodykit' with top of the line load rated alloy wheels with Bilstein Komfort Coilovers and no expense spared on the tyres.'No expense spared' is probably a good description for this example as Westdubs were commissioned for a two-birth pop top conversion. This plus the rock and roll bed, make a four-berth camper. The trim is a mix of leather and Alcantara and fully matched throughout. Camper goodies include captain drivers and passenger's seats on the swivel, top load fridge, gas burner and sink which is coupled to a solar 240v hook-up and diesel night heater, all give ultimate weekend practicality. To the side is a Fiama F45 awning and for fun a starlight roof, much like a Rolls-Royce. An upgraded stereo system with Alpine amplifier and speaker upgrade. We are sure there are more items to mention but naturally being such an expensive conversion, the van is also kitted with a Pandora Pro tracker and an alarm with remote start. The whole conversion plus van, bearing in mind it has covered a mere 5,000 miles, cost an estimated £85,000. There is no better way to travel and camp out under the stars whist still looking fantastic on road, this van not only looks great stood still but handles well regardless of the conversion with ample power from the T30 powerplant and good road handling with this stunning setup. This is a VAT qualifying vehicle so if VAT registered you can also make quite a saving!A list of the full upgrades to this van include;Smart beds 3/4 bed, crash tested, trimmed in Nappa leather and Alcantara to match the front seats CTEK battery to battery solar/240v hook-up charger under driver's seat200 watt black solar panel2kw diesel heaterFour x privacy windows with openersLeisure battery for off grid livingRGB lightingLOC 8 table systemFiamma F45 AwningDouble swivel caravans seat base to spin passengers bench round12mm ply flooring with black heavy duty alto finish240v sockets to rear and camping hook-upPop top lights with USB chargers for top bunk bedFibre optic ceilingDomestic double hob and sinkTop loading fridge £4,000 Evo motion design kitchenJohn Kleis car audio and securityAmp to power front alpine tweeter and door speaker upgrade Pandora Alarm, tracker, remote key start, app controlled unlock/start/lock costing £2,600GardX ceramic coating to all exteriorHeated front and rear windowsHeated mirrors, power folding, mapped to fold with one key clickMapped needle sweep on start-upRare factory fitted cab carpets Volkswagen rubber matsLeighton vans front splitterBlack gloss grille insertsBlack indicator side repeatersRear Leighton vans spoiler receipt attached at bottom20 € load rated alloys with top of the range tyres £5,000 alone!Bilstein Komfort Coilovers £1,800Install by Jtech automotive

Etel Adnan (Lebanon, 1925-2021)Thresholds mixed media on paper, leporello, booklet 22 pages signed, titled, inscribed, dedicated 'Thresholds' from 'Ghairi bisifat kaouni' to Charbel Dagher 2003 writing and drawing Etel Adnan Beiteddine 2003', executed in 200317.5 x 259.6cm (6 7/8 x 102 3/16in).Footnotes:Provenance:Property from a private collection, DubaiAgial Art Gallery, Beirut Formerly property from the collection of Dr Charbel DagherBonhams has the privilege of presenting one of Etel Adnan's most distinctive artistic creations. Threshold is one of Adnan's leporello works dedicated to and formerly in the collection of Dr Charbel Dagher. Adnan was influenced by Dr Dagher's thought-provoking poem 'Threshold' that explores the concept of boundaries and limits, both physical and metaphorical. Through its use of vivid imagery and metaphorical language, the poem suggests that everything in life has a threshold, and that these limits are an inherent part of the human experience. Here Adnan features transcripts of Dagher's poem and combines it with visual observations that are drawn using simple lines and bright colours conveying a sense of playfulness and spontaneity. The choice of the leporello format presented Adnan with a dynamic paradox: an expanded space, multiplying its potentialities as the pages unfurl but when closed, reduced to the symbolic space of a notebook, a metaphor for mobility and aesthetic nomadism. The term 'leporello' comes from the character of the same name in Mozart's opera Don Giovanni, who carries a long list of the protagonist's romantic conquests. Adnan's leporellos are a series of accordion-folded booklets that combine text and images, however, they are not lists but rather an exploration of memory, place, space and language. Other leporellos by Adnan also feature lavish illustrations of landscapes and transcriptions of Arab poetry by writers and poets including Mahmoud Darwish and Yusuf Al Khal as well as her own writing. Adnan's leporellos typically feature one continuous landscape or cityscape image that unfolds across the accordion folds, while the text accompanies the images, often in short poetic fragments. One of Adnan's most well-known leporellos is 'Mount Tamalpais Morning,' which depicts the Northern California mountain in bright blues, greens, and yellows, and features text that evokes the experience of being in nature. Other leporellos include 'Shoreline,' which portrays the coastline of the Mediterranean, and 'Journey to Mount Tamalpais,' which describes Adnan's drive to the mountain and features an image of the road winding through the landscape. Adnan's leporellos are intimate and personal works, reflecting her deep connection to place and her experience of the world. They invite the viewer to enter into Adnan's world and explore the relationship between image and text, landscape and memory, and the possibilities of the accordion fold format.-Dr Charbel Dagher-Dr Charbel Dagher is a Lebanese-American poet, writer, and educator. His poetry is known for its themes of identity, exile, love, and loss, and it often explores the complex relationship between the individual and society. Dagher's poems are characterized by their vivid imagery, emotional intensity, and lyrical language. He frequently employs metaphors and symbols to convey his ideas and feelings, and his use of sound and rhythm adds a musical quality to his work. Dagher's poetry is deeply personal and reflective, yet it speaks to universal themes and experiences. His work captures the complexity and beauty of the human experience, and his words resonate with readers across cultures and borders. One of Dagher's notable works is his collection of poems titled 'Anthems for the Unwanted,' which explores the experiences of refugees and immigrants. The collection highlights the struggles, hopes, and dreams of people who are often marginalized and silenced in society.-Threshold Poem-The poem Threshold begins with an image of a door, which represents a threshold or boundary between two spaces. The door is described as 'narrow' and 'barren,' suggesting that it is not particularly inviting or welcoming. This image sets the tone for the rest of the poem, which is concerned with the idea of limits and boundaries. The next few lines of the poem describe various physical thresholds, such as the point at which a river meets the sea and the place where the earth meets the sky. These images serve to emphasize the idea that everything in life has a limit or boundary. The poem then shifts to a more metaphorical exploration of thresholds. The speaker suggests that there are limits to what we can know and understand, and that these limits are like 'a wall we cannot breach.' This image suggests that there are some things that are simply beyond our comprehension, no matter how hard we try. The final lines of the poem suggest that even death itself is a threshold, a boundary that we cannot cross. The speaker suggests that death is like a door that we must all pass through eventually, and that it represents the ultimate limit or boundary. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ** VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Found while searching with a metal detector near Roxwell, Essex, UK, by Albert Robert Taylor on 4th September 2021.Accompanied by a copy of the British Museum's Portable Antiquities Scheme (PAS) report no.ESS-CD68AE. Accompanied by a copy of the report for H M Coroner on find of potential treasure with reference no.2022 T920. Accompanied by a copy of a letter from the British Museum disclaiming the Crown's interest in the find. Accompanied by a copy of the Treasure Act receipt. Accompanied by copies of the relevant pages on an article about finding this ring in Treasure Hunting Magazine, August 2022, p.13. The ring's find location is close to an estate which was owned in the 14th century by the Skrene family and which included among their number a senior barrister and sergeant-at-law named William Skrene who was an Irish-born barrister and judge. The family name lives on to the present day at Roxwell with Skreens Park and for local road names nearby. Wiiliam spent his professional life in England, being appointed King's Serjeant and a judge of assize, as well as Chief Baron of the Irish Exchequer in 1395-7. In addition to the estate at Roxwell, he acquired various lands in Essex, including at Writtle, Great Finborough and Stanford Rivers. William died in 1419-20 and left sons and a daughter; his heir, also called William, married Alice Tyrrell, widow of Hamo Strange, and daughter of John Tyrrell, who was Speaker of the House of Commons of England for three terms. The exact combination of motto and crest or badge has eluded researches thus far. However, the ring was found near Roxwell, Essex, and evidently belonged to a person of some wealth and status given the quantity of gold used in its manufacture and the quality of the workmanship. The style of the ring is close in appearance to a number of early 15th century examples, which began to appear with the badge and motto rather than the full armorial bearings, so it is very possible that this is the personal signet ring of William Skrene, or possibly of his sons, William or Thomas. * Cambridge (George William Frederick, 1819-1904). Prince, second duke of Cambridge, Field Marshal. A collection of approximately 48 Letters Signed (invariably 'George'),1840 to 1898, to various correspondents, from Gloucester House, St James's Palace, Horse Guards, Rome (1840, announcing his return to England and asking for further leave of absence), Cambridge House, Royal Barracks, York, Chichester, Bad Homburg, Bangor, and Normanby Park, many with social content, but several touch upon army matters and appointments etc., one asks a clergyman to preach a sermon, another refers to loaning works of art for exhibition, he makes domestic arrangements for his brother-in-law, the Grand Duke, etc., the condition generally good with some occasional traces of mounting (one letter adhering to the remains of a mount), with some envelopesQTY: (approx. 48)NOTE:Correspondents include Henry Lennon, (Lord) de Ros, (Lord) Claremont - 'no doubt in future European Wars, the losses in the cavalry will be extremely heavy, both in men & horses, & yet they will have to be put up with ...', 30 December 1860; ?George Robert Gleig; Lady Hooker, refusing permission for a youth brigade to 'ply its trade' within the gates of Hyde Park during the exhibition (1862); the Dean of Westminster; Charles ?Banks, acknowledging his appointment as a Governor of the Royal Hospital; Sir Charles ('Charley') Hall, with whom he was evidently particularly friendly (6); sending his Christmas contribution to the poor of St James's; the Lord Mayor of London; (Lord) de Grey, giving his reasons for objecting to the proposal to reduce the number of European troops serving in India (1865); a long letter to his aunt, 22 August 1850, following the death of his father (torn and repaired); the marchioness of Westminster; Sir Martin Andrew Dillon, his assistant military secretary (8) 1883-1898 where dated, largely social, the earliest (in pencil) a long letter following Dillon's resignation; etc.The duke of Cambridge was the grandson of George III. His career in the army was rapid: he was commissioned as a lieutenant-colonel in 1842, becoming Colonel of the regiment ten days later. By 1845 he was major-general. In 1852 he was appointed inspector-general of cavalry. In 1854 he became commander of the first division destined for the Crimea and returned the following year, to be showered with honours. He was commander-in-chief the next year, and 1862 raised to field marshal. Although he was very active in reforming and reorganising the army he resisted the wide- ranging changes made by the secretary of state, which halved the numbers employed in colonial garrisons (his opinions are expressed in the letter to Lord de Grey).'The duke was immensely popular within the army. An excellent after-dinner speaker, he was known to be kindly and considerate, a staunch upholder of military traditions, and a keen sportsman. He was also fondly regarded by those who appreciated his thorough knowledge of drill and his outspoken comments at field days and inspections. A series of banquets at military clubs and messes marked the duke's retirement' (ODNB).
