*Nightingale (Florence, 1820-1910). Autograph letter signed ‘Florence Nightingale', 10 South Street, Park Lane, W., 27th November 1882, to Rt. Hon. G[eorge] Shaw Lefevre MP, on letterhead stationery, in full, ‘It is truly kind of you to think of me for the opening of the Law Courts on December 4th. And I cannot resist such kindness. It is indeed "a very great historical event" - too great not to inspire any body with vigour & spirit to be present who is so favoured by you. And if you will be so very good as to send me "a ticket" for myself "and a gentleman" you shall see that ‘Tho' my legs be cuttit off - I'll fight upon my stumps'', 2 pp., 8vo. George Lefevre was an nephew of Charles Shaw Lefevre, Speaker of the House of Commons and a friend of the Nightingales when Florence was young. At the time this letter was written, George Lefevre was the First Commissioner of Works and Public Buildings. Florence was very busy with her work in India during this year but suffered from reoccurring ill health and was particularly ill during November 1882. The "gentleman" in question may have been Sir Harry Verney (her brother in law) as a letter held at Claydon House to Verney, dated 30th November 1882, tells Verney that George Lefevre has sent two tickets for the Law Courts Opening. (Information supplied by the Florence Nightingale Museum.). The quote at the end of the letter refers to the legend of the Maiden Lilliard, a 16th-century Scottish Warrior who continued to slay her English enemies even after her legs were chopped off at the Battle of Ancrum Moor in 1545. On her tomb is inscribed "Fair maiden Lilliard lies under this stane, Little was her stature but great was her fame, Upon the English louns she laid many thumps, And when her legs were cuttet off she fought upon her stumps." I wd suggest that you advertise specially there & subjoin some extracts I have selected. Ever yours J.M. Barrie. The Daily Chronicle which devotes a leading article to the book says - "The readers of Margaret Ogilvy will close the volume with the conviction that neither in history nor in literature has the mother of a man of genius ever been made so real so tender & beautiful as this..." The Speaker. "One of the most exquisite books that English letters has produced in our time. Margaret Ogilvy takes her place among the treasures of literature". British Weekly. "It stands unmatched in literature as an idyll of the divinest of human feelings - a mother's love". Daily News. "This beautiful book". Independent. "A delicate pathetic & heartfelt tribute of filial love" 3 pages on one folded leaf Garrick Club headed paper dated 8 Dec. 96 some dust-soiling Note: J.M. Barrie's mother Margaret Ogilvy had ten children J.M. being the ninth. When his brother David his mother's favourite died his mother fell into depression and Barrie tried to win her affection by dressing up in his dead brother's clothes. The obsessive relationship that grew between mother and son was to mark the whole of his life. After her death Barrie published in 1896 an adoring biography of his mother entitled simply "Margaret Ogilvy". In this poignant letter to his British publishers Barrie quotes no doubt with quiet satisfaction from the enthusiastic reviews the book had received.
