*RAF - No. 1 School of Aeronautics, Reading. A presentation photograph album for Lieutenant Colonel G.C. St. P. de Dombasle by the officers on the staff, c. 1918, decorative title by F.R. Groves in pen, ink and watercolour showing an RAF biplane, fifty-five b & w photos mounted back to back on twenty-eight leaves, neatly lettered captions beneath, photographs, captions and page borders with pen and ink rule borders, photographs mostly approx. 16 x 21cm and similar, some spotting and occasional sl. soiling, a.e.g., contemp. morocco gilt, heavily rubbed with some wear, upper joints split and upper cover near detached, folio, together with a group of twenty-six loose related b & w photos, many with wetstamps to versos, several with chips and tears, several duplicating images appearing in the album. Wing Commander Lieutenant Colonel Guy Cyril St. Pourcin de Dombasle (1883-1929) was born in Calcutta in 1883. He joined the Gloucestershire Regiment in 1900 and saw service in South Africa. When war broke out in 1914 he was in Canada and immediately jointed the 5th Canadian Infantry. In February 1916, he was seconded to the Royal Flying Corps as an observer. At the time of the Armistice he was Lieutenant Colonel RAF, and in August, 1919, he was appointed to a permanent commission with the rank of Wing Commander. He was made an Officer of the British Empire in June 1919, for distinguished services rendered during the War. In 1920 he was appointed to command No. 8 Wing at Marske and from there went to Group HQ, Kenley. He later served in Iraq, Hinaidi and Northolt. The album contains photographs of officers, cadets and life at the camp plus many photographs of aviation interest. Shown are classes being taken on stationary engines, rotary engine-running, learning to handle aircraft controls, rigging sections and details, instruments sections, signalling classes, aerial observation, artillery observation, sporting clubs and physical training, etc. (1)
