J. PURDEY AN EARLY PATTERN 12-BORE ROTARY-UNDERLEVER PINFIRE DOUBLE-BARRELLED SPORTING GUN, serial no. 6071, 30in. black powder only bold damascus barrels, the rib engraved 'J. PURDEY. 314 1/2 OXFORD STREET. LONDON.', and '2' at the breech end, rotary-underlever with single-bite grip, slim standing breech with carved serpentine fences, elongated top strap, back-action locks with dolphin hammers (one a replacement), fine border and acanthus scroll engraving, the lockplates signed 'PURDEY', the action flats with 'No. 2', 14 1/2in. well-figured stock with steel buttplate, fore-end with cross-bolt fastener, weight 6lb. 11oz. Provenance: The makers have kindly confirmed that this gun was completed in 1861 for Mr. G. Payne as No.2 of a pair. In L. LONDON.', unusual lever over guard rotary-underlever with ring tip and single-bite screw grip, square back triggerguard, ultra slim standing breech with carved serpentine fences, elongated top strap, back-action locks with fine flat side dolphin hammers, fine border and acanthus scroll engraving, the lockplates signed 'PURDEY', brushed finish overall, 15in. well-figured stock (repaired cracks to underhorns) with steel buttplate, fore-end with cross-bolt fastener, weight 7lb. 2oz., in a leather bound two tiered case, removable oak tray for the gun with provision for cartridges on the bottom tier, Purdey trade label with comprehensive contemporary hand written notes relating to the requisite powder, shot and the method of reloading cartridges Provenance: The makers have kindly provided us with the following information: Completed: 1859 For: Captain Robert Nicholson Description: A double-barrelled pinfire gun Weight: [Not Recorded] Calibre: 12-bore Barrels: 32in. Patrick Unsworth's 'The Early Purdey's' the gun is listed as having been built with 32in. barrels as 'Pinfire, back-action locks; square-backed trigger-guard with a rotating bolt and underlever curving over the trigger-guard. The leather covered oak case lined in red baize and with an under-tray to carry cartridges'. It is noted as having been sold (perhaps should be ordered) on the 27th November 1858 at a cost of £57. 15. 0 In his book 'James Purdey & Sons, Gun and Rifle Makers' Donald Dallas notes the first actual sale of a pinfire breech loader recorded is No. 5462 earlier the same year, on the 3rd May 1858. LONDON. PATENT BREECH LOADER' and '1', Lancaster patent slide-and-tilt action with recessed bosses, non-rebounding back-action locks, hammers of hare's-ear form, the breasts of the hammers striking the pins, patent grip safety (at fault), border and fine acanthus scroll engraving, brushed finish overall, 14 3/8in. well-figured stock, silver escutcheon with the Holford crest, the rear of the comb and the fore-end wood with small oval escutcheons marked '1', horn finial, weight 6lb. 12oz., in a brass-cornered two-tier oak and leather case, the lower tier blocked for cartridges Provenance: The vendors research indicates that the gun was completed in 1867 and paired with Lancaster serial no. 4177 for R.S. Holford Esq. with 30in. barrels. R.S. Holford is likely to be Robert Stayner Holford (1808 - 1892). Having inherited over a million pounds from his Uncle in 1838, he was responsible for the rebuilding of Westonbirt House in Gloucestershire between 1863 and 1870 (now Westonbirt School for girls) and also Dorchester House in Park Lane, London between 1851-3 (to house his extensive collection of paintings and books - known as 'The Holford Collection').
