Steve Ferguson (American, B. 1946) "1915 Fokker E 1" Signed lower left. Original Watercolor painting on Cold Press Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover of the Fokker E 1 from the 100 Year of Powered Flight Collection. Considered by many to be the first true fighter plane, the Fokker I gained immediate fame over the Western Front in World War I because it was not only fairly agile, it also carried a single machine gun which was synchronized to fire forward directly through the propeller. Called the "Eindecker," meaning "one wing," the E I was powered by a seven cylinder Oberursel rotary engine of 80 horsepower and was equipped with a 7.92-mm LMG 08/15 machine gun, of the type often referred to as a "Spandau." Top speed was just over 80 mph, but this was more than enough when the aircraft made its combat debut in the summer of 1915. It was succeeded in a few months by the Fokker E II, which was slightly improved, and then in late 1915 by the E III, which had a 100 horsepower Oberursel rotary. Image Size: 16.25 x 14 in. Overall Size: 20 x 15 in. Unframed. (B17094)
