Another signature of Ralph Carr of Adelphi Terrace and signature of John Morris both on title. “The first printed account of man`s entry into the region South of Antarctic Circle with rare additional chart facing p.1” (Spence). “This rare account of Cook`s second voyage was published surreptitiously eighteen months before Cook`s official narrative. It records many incidents omitted by Cook and gives the reasons which caused Sir Joseph Banks and his twelve assistants to withdraw from the expedition at the last moment. Marra was a gunner`s mate on the Resolution. He was an Irishman whom Cook had picked up in Batavia during the first voyage. Marra made an unsuccessful attempt to desert at Tahiti on May 14 1774. Marra probably supplied material from his private journal which was put into shape by some literary person in the pay of the publisher Newbery” (Hill). .

Entered the Royal Academy Schools in 1769 before becoming a pupil of Allan Ramsay, assisting with portraits of George III and Queen Charlotte. Exhibited at the Royal Academy 1773-1785. He contributed plates to Robert John Thornton`s Temple of Flora (London, 1798-1807), including those for the Blue Passion Flower and the Night Blowing Cereus, and provided drawings for the illustrations to William Taplin`s Sportsman`s Cabinet (London, 1803). A Very Rare Mahogany Earth Driven Electric Wall Clock, No.139, Bentleys, Patent 19044/10 MFcd, Leicester, England, circa 1910, the plain mahogany case with flat top pediment, bevelled side and front glasses, decorated brass cased cylindrical bob and mounted with a massive brass cased coil oscillating over a fixed iron bar, the rod mounted with switch gear applied plaques signed, 12-inch silvered dial with Roman numerals, skeletonised dial centre depicting movement plates, 165cm high see illustration. Percival Arthur Bentley filed his patent No.19044 for earth driven clocks on 13th August 1910. It is thought that only seventy were ever manufactured due to the outbreak of WWI.
